Octave Mirage Mattress Review

Strong Performance on a Midline Mattress Budget

The Octave Mirage is an all-foam model that occupies the middle space in their roster. This means it offers good performance in most areas without the higher cost of the more luxurious option in the lineup. Midline mattresses historically provide a great middle-of-the-road option for Canadians who want some performance features but have a tighter budget than those who go for expensive models. This mattress, in particular, received our highest score for pressure relief and one of the highest temperature control ratings we’ve ever given to an all-foam mattress

Octave Mirage has the same great company policies as the rest of Octave’s mattresses, with a 365-night sleep trial and a 15-year warranty if you decide to keep the mattress. For the space that it occupies, the Mirage is surprisingly thick and blew some of its price-point competition out of the water in certain performance areas. Here, we’ll take a look at how the Mirage performs and why it might be the best option for you.

Our Methodology

We rank all of our mattresses based on a combination of different scores and feedback. We look at our testing results, tester feedback, and expert opinions to get a complete picture of how a mattress will work for the majority of Canadians. During our testing phases, we emphasize the areas that Canadians find most important, including features like temperature control, motion isolation, and edge support. The idea is to address the areas where Canadians usually have the most trouble with their mattresses.

Our testing processes include a range of different tests. We test using teams of testers, take their feedback, and compare what they say to find a common opinion. We also look at each tester’s sleep profile (including body type and sleeping position) to determine how a mattress might work for every Canadian sleep demographic. We like to know how the mattress reacts in a range of circumstances. We also use simulation tests, which include equipment that measures response and heat within the mattress to determine how it works and who it will best serve.

Mattress Details

There are more all-foam mattresses on the Canadian market than nearly any other type of mattress. This means that any all-foam mattress is going to have a lot of competition, and brands need to innovate to stand out. This is exactly what Octave does. Even the Mirage, their midline offering, provides a lot of features that competitors often overlook. Octave is determined to provide mattresses that address common all-foam mattress issues, and their mattresses use proprietary materials and specialty foams to do this.

One of the areas that all-foam mattresses typically fail is temperature control. The Octave Mirage uses a range of features to reduce temperatures, including cooling nanofibres woven into the cover, phase-changing materials, memory foam infused with copper and gel, and perforated AirScape latex. These features work together to prevent the build-up of heat throughout the mattress, keeping you cool and comfortable. It receives a great score from us and performs much better than most all-foam mattresses.

Pressure relief is also a standout feature of this mattress. Most all-foam mattresses relieve pressure well, but this one is at the front of the pack. It receives our highest rating for pressure relief, which means that even our heaviest sleepers didn’t complain about pressure points or discomfort throughout their time with this mattress. This mattress aligns your body, reducing strain and evening pressure throughout.

Overall, the Octave Mirage is a great all-foam option that comes at an incredibly reasonable price. You can expect outstanding performance and a comfortable feel from this mattress.

Octave Mirage Mattress Prices and Sizes

The Octave Mirage provides an affordable middle ground between the cheaper Vista and the high-performing Horizon. As the midline mattress in Octave’s lineup, it offers some of the great performance and proprietary foams that make the brand great without breaking the bank. These prices aren’t bad at all considering the features that you get, and Octave frequently has promotions, deals, and bundles you can take advantage of to further lower the price.

Mirage is available in all six standard mattress sizes, with an additional Split King option. Split King is the size you should choose if you have a split king adjustable bed, where each side adjusts independently. It is more expensive than the other options because it is essentially two Twin XL-sized mattresses shipped in a bundle. Here are the sizes, dimensions, and prices available for the Octave Mirage.

Mattress Construction

The Octave Mirage is the company’s midline mattress. It occupies a comfortable space between the less expensive Vista and the Luxury Horizon, with excellent performance across multiple categories. Here’s how each layer of the mattress contributes.

  • Cover: The cover of the Octave Mirage is removable and machine-washable. Its unique design acts like a fingerprint – no two covers are the same, and special care is put into each one. The fabric is woven with CryoFusion cooling nanofibres, a proprietary technology for Octave and other Goodmorning.com companies. These fibres work to reduce heat build-up at the surface, keeping you cool even if you sleep hot.
  • The 1st Layer: The top layer of foam is a special memory foam. This foam is infused with copper, which conducts heat away from you and has anti-microbial properties. This foam helps you sleep cooler, reducing how much heat can build up under your body. At the same time, there are two bands of phase-changing PolarMAX materials at the top of this layer. Phase-changing materials reduce higher temperatures, helping the mattress maintain a consistent and low temperature throughout the surface.
  • The 2nd Layer: The second layer of foam within the mattress is aerated latex foam. Hundreds of small holes create better breathability throughout the mattress. These holes push cool air up throughout the mattress, reducing heat build-up so you stay comfortable even if you sleep hot. This layer also helps cradle your body, keeping pressure points from affecting your sleep.
  • The 3rd Layer: A transition layer of latex-alternative Elastex foam relieves pressure and protects you from the firmer support layer below. This layer is responsive, and bouncy, and offers ease of movement that you won’t find in pure memory foam mattresses. The extra cushion makes it ideal for side sleepers and heavier sleepers.
  • The 4th Layer: The final layer of foam within the mattress is a high-density foam foundation. This layer provides durability and support, with channels cut into the foam to provide better breathability. This layer is also zoned, so you get the strongest support right where you need it.

Even among other all-foam mattresses in Canada, the Octave Mirage provides some of the best pressure relief we’ve seen. This mattress truly makes you feel as though you are sleeping on a cloud, without feeling stuck in the mattress or overheating. The layers work together to support and align even the heaviest sleepers, making it an ideal option for Canadians who want only the best.

Mattress Performance Test Results

Feeling the pressure relief from the Octave Mirage
Feeling the pressure relief from the Octave Mirage

We evaluated all our mattresses using a gauntlet of tests, which ranged from practical (using a team of testers) to simulation tests. Simulation tests were created to mimic different conditions, so they give us a good idea of how the mattress will perform for most Canadians. We took a close look at the features that Canadians found most important, such as temperature control, motion isolation, and edge support features.

Temperature Control (9.3/10)

Active cooling features are essential for many Canadians, especially those who suffer from night sweats. Those who often overheat need a mattress that vents off heat and neutralizes higher temperatures. To determine whether mattresses did this effectively, we mapped each mattress with heat mapping software to determine how quickly it exceeded comfortable temperature. Then, we looked at how long the cooling features took to ‘activate’ and cool the mattress off. If you sleep extremely hot, it’s important to choose a mattress with a rating of at least 8 out of 10 in temperature control.

The Octave Mirage performed well when it came to cooling. The layers aren’t thick or uncomfortable enough to hold onto much heat, and layers like the aerated latex circulate cooler air through the mattress. The vents built into the foundation layer help with cooler air at the core of the mattress, and the cooling cover pulls its weight as well. Phase-changing material reduces heat at the top of the mattress far more effectively here than in some of the other all-foam mattresses we tested. Testers didn’t feel uncomfortable after hours of sleeping here, and our simulation testing revealed that the mattress quickly dealt with heat when it was allowed to build up.

Motion Isolation (8.2/10)

Motion isolation is one of the most important factors that we test for, so we work with each mattress extensively to determine how well it deals with motion. We used practical testing with testers on each side of the mattress, used tester feedback from their time with the mattress at home, and performed ball drop tests. When testing with weighted balls, we measured the vibration on the other side of the mattress to see how well motion was allowed to transfer. A mattress rated at least a 6 out of 10 is essential for couples, and couples with restless partners need a rating closer to 8 out of 10 to feel comfortable.

Octave Mirage doesn’t perform too well when it comes to motion isolation. This is a little surprising to us, considering that all-foam mattresses typically isolate motion better than hybrids. We noted some vibration from the other side of the bed, and some testers said that it was enough to wake them up. However, most said they felt some motion but it wasn’t enough to disturb their sleep. This is an area that could improve with the Octave Mirage and both of Octave’s other mattresses.

Edge Support (8.6/10)

Edge support can be an important feature, particularly for sleepers who naturally sleep near the edge of the bed. It can also be important for Canadians who like to sit near the edge of the bed in the morning to wake up. Bolstered edges help the mattress provide the same level of comfort and support from one edge of the mattress to the other. If you need stronger edges in your mattress, you should aim for an option that rates at least a 5 out of 10.

The edge support on the Octave Mirage could use some work. While it isn’t the worst we’ve ever seen in terms of edge support in an all-foam mattress, it doesn’t do a lot to prevent sinking and sagging at the edges. This is especially true for heavier Canadians, so those who need extra edge support might want to steer clear. If you are a lighter sleeper or don’t value edge support as highly as some of the other features the mattress offers (such as pressure relief), the edge support level will be fine for you.

Firmness and Feel of the Octave Mirage Mattress

When we evaluate a mattress, we have to look at how firm it is. Firmness is a huge factor for most Canadians, as it’s one of the only ways to determine if a mattress is right for you before trying it out. We rate all of our mattresses on a scale between 1 and 10. A mattress rated close to 1 is softer, while a mattress with a higher rating is firmer.

Firmness Chart 6.5
The Octave Mirage is a 6.5 on our firmness scale.

The Octave Mirage, like all of the mattresses in Octave’s lineup, rates at a 6.5. This makes it medium-firm. When it comes to all-foam mattresses, this is the average firmness you can expect. Here, it means you’ll get better full-body support than with a softer mattress. The plush layers throughout the top of the mattress reduce pressure, even for heavier sleepers.

This mattress also offers good alignment for an all-foam option. The Octave Mirage is a bit thinner than the Horizon, but it offers nearly the same level of sinkage. You’ll get a comfortable all-foam hug without feeling like you are stuck in the mattress.

Performance for Different Weights and Sleeping Preferences

Testing the pressure relief of the Octave Mirage mattress

Regardless of how they are constructed, mattresses may feel different for every user. Factors like your body type and sleeping position can change how a mattress feels, as the materials will react differently based on how you sleep. A firmness rating can tell you how a mattress will generally feel, but we provide these ratings as a way for you to reference how each mattress will feel based on your personal preferences. Here’s how these factors can affect how a mattress feels for you.

Weight Considerations

Your body type is one of the biggest factors to consider, as it can determine how a mattress feels for you. Heavier sleepers (defined by the mattress industry as weighing more than 230 pounds) will have a different experience on most mattresses when compared to lightweight sleepers (those weighing less than 130 pounds). Average sleepers, who occupy the space between, may also have a different experience on some mattresses.

The Octave Mirage is a thick mattress with great pressure relief, which gives it a lot of advantages for sleepers of all body types. Our testers reported that the mattress was comfortable no matter what their body type was, and even the heaviest testers reported no issues with the way the mattress felt for them.

Sleeping Positions

Different sleeping positions need different levels of support, pressure relief, and alignment. One mattress may be suited for a certain type of sleeper but not for others – it depends on the materials used and how it performs. Here’s how the Mirage stacks up for sleepers in the following sleeping positions.

  • Side Sleepers: Side sleepers need proper alignment and pressure relief to feel comfortable. Heavier side sleepers require a thicker mattress, as thinner mattresses may allow them to sink too far into the support layers. A mattress with strong lumbar support and alignment works best, and pressure relief is a definite necessity as well.  The Octave Mirage has industry-leading pressure relief, which may be enough for some side sleepers. The support foam is zoned, but it won’t offer the same level of lumbar support as a hybrid mattress.
  • Back Sleepers: Back sleepers need a mattress that will lift them out of the mattress and contour to their body. It can be difficult for back sleepers to find a neutral sleeping position due to the way that most foam mattresses sink. The Mirage is no exception, though it may be best for some lighter back sleepers and those who don’t mind a little bit of extra sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleepers need a soft top for pressure relief and strong support from below. While this mattress could be good for some stomach sleepers, this is going to depend on a lot of factors and may not be the same for everyone. Stomach sleepers may not get the support they need from this mattress, but the pressure relief could be perfect for them.
  • Combo Sleepers: Above all, combination sleepers need to be able to move around easily. These sleepers need to change positions frequently during the night. All-foam mattresses typically don’t offer great ease of movement, as you can feel stuck in the materials. The Mirage gets good scores in this category, but they aren’t the best. Some combination sleepers will be perfectly comfortable, while others may need a mattress with more ease of movement.

Delivery, Sleep Trials, & Returns

Octave is a Canadian brand. All Octave mattresses, including the Mirage, ship from Ontario or Alberta (whichever is closest to you, or whichever has the stock on hand). Mattresses ship within 1 to 3 business days when they are in stock. In most locations, your mattress will be delivered between 2 and 5 business days after it ships. Octave uses FedEx Ground and shipping is free to most locations. Shipping to the territories requires a $250 fee.

Once your mattress arrives, you only have to slide it out of the box and slice into the plastic. Once the seal is broken, the mattress will begin to expand to its full size. After you receive the mattress, your 365-night sleep trial starts. This gives you a full year to see if the mattress is a good fit for you. If it isn’t, you can start a return after 21 days. You’ll receive a full refund of your purchase price with no restocking or return fees.

  • Shipping Cost: Free (except to Canadian Territories)

Company Background

Octave is a Goodmorning.com company. Goodmorning.com is a Canadian mattress company with different brands for a range of needs, including luxurious hybrids, top-performing all-foam mattresses, and mattresses that are more budget-friendly than the average. Octave ships all of its mattresses from Canadian warehouses and factories, and all of its mattresses are made here as well.

Octave is exclusively online, and you won’t find their mattresses in physical stores anywhere in Canada. The long sleep trial makes up for the lack of in-person testing, though. Octave offers three mattresses, including the budget Octave Vista and the more luxurious Octave Horizon. They also make bed frames, bedding, pillows, and more.

Commitment to the Environment

Goodmorning.com has a commitment to environmentally-conscious manufacturing and business practices across all of its brands, which includes Octave. Octave uses eco-conscious materials such as Elatex, which uses fewer chemicals than standard latex. All mattresses returned during the trial period are recycled or donated to local charities for those in need, so they don’t end up in a landfill.

Each mattress uses materials that reduce its carbon footprint. Additionally, all of Goodmorning.com’s factories and offices are partnered with Bullfrog Power, which uses renewable energy to power commercial and industrial spaces.

Octave Mirage vs Other Octave Mattresses

The Octave Mirage is the company’s midline mattress. There are two other mattresses available through Octave, including the inexpensive Vista and the feature-heavy Octave Horizon. Here, we’ll look at how the Mirage compares to both of the other mattresses in Octave’s lineup.

Testing the responsiveness of the layers inside the Octave Vista

Mirage vs Vista Octave Mattresses

Vista is Octave’s base model. It doesn’t use a layer of aerated foam and is much thinner as a result. The layers are a bit thinner as well, but the cover and materials remain relatively unchanged. Still, this mattress didn’t perform as well as the Mirage when it comes to pressure relief. It also sleeps hotter because of the lack of aerated latex in the middle of the mattress.

The Vista wins out because of the lower price point in many cases, but it doesn’t offer the same level of performance that you’ll find in the Mirage. When comparing the different mattress ‘levels’ from Octave, the jump from the Vista to the Mirage is the largest on the roster. However, a Queen-sized Vista is $899, while a Queen-sized Mirage is $1,199. You should choose the one that makes the most sense for your sleep and your budget.

Mirage vs Horizon Octave Mattresses

The Octave Horizon is the most luxurious mattress that Octave offers. This mattress goes above and beyond the other options on the roster, with thicker foams and an additional layer of ecoLuxe cooling gel. This helps with even deeper pressure points and better cooling. Horizon offers better performance overall, but the scores we gave it are only a bit higher than Mirage’s.

When it comes down to it, the advantage might not be enough for some Canadians. The extra cost is higher than we’d like to see considering the few additions that this upgraded version offers.

Competing Canadian Mattress Comparisons

All-foam mattresses are popular in the Canadian market, and there are a lot of competing options to choose from. Here, we’ll look at how the Octave Mirage stacks up to two popular all-foam options available in Canada, the Endy and the Silk & Snow.

Octave Mirage vs Endy

Endy logo on the Endy mattress
Endy logo on the Endy mattress

The Endy mattress is an all-foam option made with temperature-neutral foam. It uses open-cell proprietary foams to reduce heat and motion transfer, which works well for it. Endy is one of the best options on the Canadian market when it comes to motion isolation, and it comes at a lower price than the Mirage.

However, the Endy doesn’t perform as well when it comes to pressure relief and bounce. While the Mirage doesn’t do the best when it comes to bounce, it still wins out over the Endy’s design. The Endy’s temperature-neutral foam is a clear bonus, though, and its motion isolation may be more attractive for some users.

Octave Mirage vs Silk & Snow

Silk & Snow mattress in a bedroom
Silk & Snow mattress in a bedroom

Silk & Snow’s flagship mattress is an all-foam option with three layers of high-density foam. It’s an eco-conscious mattress that is manufactured with transparency in mind. A strong foam core helps with better alignment and comfort, reducing strain and pressure on your body. This is one of Silk & Snow’s most popular mattresses, too.

The Silk & Snow mattress performs worse when it comes to cooling and pressure relief, which are the two areas where the Mirage excels. However, it also offers much better motion isolation. It doesn’t sleep as cool, but your partner’s movements are less likely to wake you up on the Silk & Snow. The cover is also removable and washable but uses antimicrobial fibres rather than cooling fibres. The Mirage outpaces it in some categories, but the Silk & Snow has a clear edge in others.

Should You Buy an Octave Mirage Mattress?

The Octave Mirage can be a great option for those who want a little more for their money. Since it’s a midline mattress, it offers higher performance at a lower price. This might appeal to you if you are on a budget but have specific sleep needs. The needs this mattress meets most often are pressure relief and cooling.

The 365-night sleep trial gives you plenty of time to see if the mattress works for you. This is one of the reasons that we are so comfortable recommending it to you. If you aren’t sure that it’s the right option for you, trying it out is simple and risk-free. If you are on the fence, there’s no harm in seeing how it works out.

Highlights of the Octave Mirage Mattress

Octave Mirage performs well considering its all-foam construction, especially in areas where all-foam mattresses usually come up short. Highlights of this mattress include one of the highest pressure relief scores we’ve ever given, with materials that support and balance your body without any additional strain.

Temperature control is also a highlight of this mattress. It reduces higher temperatures with various active cooling features, all of which work together to keep you comfortable. Though it doesn’t offer our highest temperature control score, it still scores very high for an all-foam mattress.

Areas for Improvement

The Octave Mirage got great scores across most of our performance areas, but some issues need to be addressed. The motion isolation isn’t terrible, but it could be a lot better considering that this is an all-foam mattress. Edge support also performs poorer than we generally like to see. While all-foam mattresses usually have poor edge support, there could be better bolstering here to prevent sagging across the board.

Other areas that might need some love include bounce and ease of movement. This mattress offers great sinkage, but it sacrifices feedback and movement to allow for it. If these are areas that are important to you, you might want to look elsewhere for your new mattress.

Our Recommendations for the Octave Mirage Mattress

We recommend the Octave Mirage to those who sleep hot, as well as heavier side sleepers. Average sleepers can appreciate the superior pressure relief here. The thicker profile makes it better at keeping you lifted out of the support layers and well-balanced throughout.

FAQs

What is the weight limit of the Octave Mirage mattress?

The Octave Mirage can support up to 500 pounds total, or 250 pounds per sleeper. Keep in mind that the weight limit of any mattress needs to include any sleepers as well as bedding, pets, and anything else that will be on top of the mattress.

Is the Octave Mirage made in Canada?

The Octave Mirage is made right here in Canada, and the company uses Canadian materials where they can.

Which foundations are compatible with Octave Mirage?

Mirage is compatible with most foundations. You can use a box foundation, platform bed, adjustable bed, or slatted frame. The base should be solid to avoid sagging over time, and we don’t recommend putting the Mirage directly on the floor.

How long does it take for the Octave Mirage to off-gas once it is installed in your home?

The Octave Mirage takes about 24 hours to expand to its full size, so you shouldn’t use it within the first 24 hours after bringing it home. The off-gassing process should last about a week, when the smell will linger and may irritate sensitive Canadians. During this time, you can keep the mattress in a well-ventilated area with a fan if you find that the smell is affecting you.

Can the cover of the Mirage be washed at home?

Yes! It’s easy to zip the cover of the Octave Mirage off of the mattress. It’s machine washable and requires no super special instructions. Reattaching it is easy, too.

Can you flip the Octave Mirage to avoid indents?

Due to the way that most modern mattresses are constructed, it is generally not a good idea to flip them. They are constructed in a certain way to maximize comfort and breathability. The construction provides the best experience based on the materials. However, you are encouraged to rotate your mattress every 3 to 6 months to avoid deep body indents forming where you sleep.

Are the materials used in the Octave Mirage organic?

No, the materials used to create the Octave Mirage are not organic. While it does use eco-conscious materials, none of them are marketed or certified as organic materials.
