The Silk & Snow is a budget foam mattress that provides solid performance across most categories. This mattress is budget-friendly, with better quality materials than you would assume for the price. At just $800 for a Queen, you can improve your sleep without springing for an expensive, imported mattress.

Silk & Snow makes all of their mattresses right here in Canada using Canadian materials, which means that you get savings and peace of mind. This all-foam model uses high-density foams to create a surface that relieves pressure for all sleepers, with emphasis on those who need to avoid excessive pressure. If you are on a tight budget, don’t settle for less.

Our Methodology

Here at Slumber, we test our mattresses thoroughly. Our in-depth evaluation process takes several weeks for each mattress in our lineup. We put each mattress through a variety of tests, including simulation tests (such as ball drop tests) as well as practical tests (with real testers). The data from these combined rounds of testing allows us to determine which options work best for most sleepers, as well as how each mattress will perform in a variety of circumstances.

Our testing team includes testers that sleep in every possible way. They all have different sleep preferences, and different needs, and take feedback for these mattresses very seriously. As a result, we can give you a good idea of how the mattress might work for you. With feedback from all of our testers and testing methods, we can determine if a mattress is a good recommendation for most Canadians.

Mattress Details

The Silk & Snow Mattress is an all-foam option that uses three layers of foam inside an antimicrobial cover. The foam isn’t standard memory foam, either – the materials used here are high-density blends that offer better pressure relief than standard foam would. The layers use motion isolation foam, cooling gel foam, and a supportive base to reduce strain and keep you properly aligned throughout the night.

The cover of the mattress is washable, too. It’s easy to remove and wash at home, so it’s easy to refresh your bed when you need it. All of the materials used within this mattress are produced and assembled in Toronto, making this a Canadian mattress through and through. With exceptional eco-conscious qualities, ease of movement, and motion isolation, this budget-friendly mattress provides a ton of benefits for its price point.

Testing the performance of the Silk & Snow Mattress
Testing the performance of the Silk & Snow Mattress

The Silk & Snow mattress is an extremely affordable option, even when you compare it to other all-foam options. It’s difficult to find a mattress at this price point that offers this many benefits, especially when you consider the layers of high-density foam and high-quality materials. A queen is only $800, which is a bargain for a mattress with this many features.

This mattress provided some of the best pressure relief scores even among other foam mattresses, with impressive motion isolation scores as well. It’s easy to move around on the surface, and the company policies are comparable to some of the other top mattress companies on the Canadian market.

You can purchase the Silk & Snow in all six standard mattress sizes. It does not offer a Split King option. Still, the 365-night sleep trial and 15-year warranty make a difference in helping you decide which options to choose.

Mattress Construction

The Silk & Snow Mattress uses three layers of high-density and comfortable foams. These foams work together to provide a comfortable profile that doesn’t put any additional strain on your joints. These foams are surrounded by a comfortable cooling cover.

  • The Cover: The removable, washable cover of the Silk & Snow mattress is made with an antimicrobial textile. This helps reduce and prevent the growth of bacteria, which removes odours from your mattress. The 360-degree zipper is smooth, and there are no special instructions for washing the cover.
  • The 1st Layer: The mattress’s top layer is a gel memory foam. This high-density foam provides a soft, pressure-relieving top layer that reduces higher temperatures. It remains durable after years of use and is unlikely to develop uncomfortable indents before its time.
  • The 2nd Layer: The middle layer is a transition foam. This supportive layer helps relieve pressure, reducing strain on your joints and balancing your body for best results. This layer also helps align your body and prevent motion isolation, keeping you still even when your partner tosses and turns.
  • The 3rd Layer: The 6” base layer is high-density support foam. This foam helps keep your body in a neutral position while maintaining the overall durability and structure of the mattress. This layer is the perfect complement to the layers above, reducing strain and discomfort to help you sleep better.

Despite its thinner profile, the Silk & Snow mattress offers some amazing pressure relief. We expect all-foam mattresses to maintain comfortable pressure relief, but thinner mattresses are often unable to achieve this. Mostly, we believe that Silk & Snow’s high-density materials can achieve a more comfortable feel. They keep you lifted out of the mattress, so you don’t feel the firm materials that are working to keep you comfortable.

Mattress Performance Test Results

Examining the layers used to create the Silk & Snow Mattress

We tested the Silk & Snow Hybrid in a multitude of ways, putting it through its paces to deliver accurate testing results for you. Three layers of foam reacted quickly, reduced temperature, and isolated motion to our satisfaction. Here’s how it performed in the three most important mattress tests for Canadians.

Temperature Control (8.0/10)

We rate temperature control based on a few factors. We look at how quickly heat builds up within the materials, and how hot the temperatures are. Then we see how quickly the materials work to isolate and remove that heat. This can be due to cooling materials or breathability, as each provides a different level of support for lower temperatures. Most sleepers do okay with a mattress rated at a 6 out of 10, but hotter sleepers need better performance in this category. We wouldn’t recommend anything that rates under an 8 out of 10 for extremely hot sleepers.

The Silk & Snow is right on that line, with a temperature control rating of 8 out of 10 from us. It’s an all-foam mattress, so these scores are actually a bit better than average. We noted that the memory foam allowed heat to build up quickly during use, and the cooling gel foam wasn’t enough to vent it off. Some of our testers mentioned that they felt hotter on this mattress, and we can assume that’s because it isn’t as breathable as some of the other options we’ve seen. If you only need moderate heat relief, this mattress might be okay for you. However, if heat is something you consider important, you might want to look into a cooler mattress.

Motion Isolation (9.4/10)

Through a mix of weighted ball drop testing and practical tester evaluations, we measured how much the Silk & Snow mattress absorbs motion. We looked at how much vibration was felt on the other side of the bed after movement, detecting changes in the surface of the mattress with our equipment. Our testers told us what they could and couldn’t feel from the other side of the bed in their gauntlet of tests. We looked at these scores together to determine how a mattress would perform in various circumstances. A rating of at least 7 out of 10 is required for those with restless partners, but a higher score is obviously better.

To make up for its score in temperature control, the Silk & Snow Mattress features a great motion isolation score. The high-density materials are great at absorbing motion, reducing discomfort to keep you from feeling anything that happens on the other side of the bed. Whether you are an extremely light sleeper or your partner is particularly restless, the motion isolation from this mattress is extremely effective.

Edge Support (8.1/10)

Across the board, edge support can be an important metric for support. All-foam mattresses tend to lose support as you approach the edges, allowing deep sagging and sinking from the mattress. This gets worse when you sleep there, or if you sit at the edge in the morning. A mattress with a rating of at least 7 should offer much better support, but those who spend a lot of time near the edge of the bed should choose a mattress with a higher score.

The Silk & Snow Hybrid has better-than-average edge support for an all-foam mattress. There are no additional measures to bolster the edges; instead, the support layers keep the same level of support throughout. You’ll feel more comfortable at the edge of the mattress, but heavier Canadians might need a mattress with better edge support overall.

Firmness and Feel of the Silk & Snow Mattress

Firmness is an important metric to consider when shopping for a mattress. Everyone has a firmness they prefer. It is often informed by how they sleep, how much they weigh, and if they sleep with a partner. We rank each mattress on a firmness scale from 1 to 10. A mattress that ranks 1 is extremely soft, while a mattress at 10 is too firm to be comfortable. We consider how the manufacturer ranks their mattress, but we make our own calls based on our tests and feedback.

The Silk & Snow Mattress ranks at about a 6 on our firmness scale.

The Silk & Snow is medium firm, with a ranking of about 6 out of 10. It’s firmer and more supportive than a medium mattress, with enough cushion that it isn’t too uncomfortable for most Canadians. It offers a little more support than a standard memory foam mattress, but the sinkage is still pretty deep. The sinkage alone may affect how this mattress feels for some sleepers.

Still, this mattress does well when it comes to pressure relief and alignment for different sleeping positions. It doesn’t offer lumbar support in most capacities, but it does well enough for those who don’t need extreme levels of support around their lower backs.

Performance for Different Weights and Sleeping Preferences

How a mattress feels is informed by a few different factors, including your body type and sleeping position. Our testing process involved sleepers across all of these categories, so we are well equipped to deliver our opinions for each of these considerations. Here’s what we found through our tests of the Silk & Snow mattress.

Weight Considerations

The Canadian mattress industry offers three different categories for sleepers. Lighter sleepers weigh less than 130 pounds, while heavier sleepers weigh more than 230 pounds. Those between 130 and 230 are considered ‘average’. These determinations help them recommend mattresses based on body type, and we use the same ranges for the sake of simplicity.

Lightweight and average sleepers should have no issues with the Silk & Snow mattress. Their pressure relief and support profiles should be well-supported, and the mattress’s dense memory foam will reduce discomfort for those who sink in. However, heavier sleepers may need a thicker mattress. Despite the high-density foam layers, heavier sleepers may sink into the foams and feel the firmness of the support layer below.

Sleeping Positions

Sleepers need different levels of support and pressure relief based on how they sleep. If you know how you sleep, you are a few steps closer to determining which type of mattress will work best for you. We broke down how this mattress performed for each sleeping position, and here are our results.

  • Side Sleepers: The Silk & Snow sinks a lot and has good pressure relief, so side sleepers will be comfortable. The mattress won’t push back on them too much. It also helps align your spine, keeping it neutral to prevent aches and discomfort. While some side sleepers may need better support from the core of the mattress, most will be fine with this level of support.
  • Back Sleepers: Back sleepers tend to prefer greater contouring to relieve pressure throughout their bodies. Since the Silk & Snow offers great contouring through the deeper level of sinkage, it might be one of the best choices for back sleepers. If you need firmer support, though, you may be better off choosing a hybrid mattress that enhances lumbar support.
  • Stomach Sleepers: Those who sleep on their stomachs need an extremely supportive mattress with a soft, comfortable top. While the Silk & Snow mattress provides the latter, it doesn’t provide the level of support that some stomach sleepers may need. As a result, stomach sleepers should look for mattresses that provide better support.
  • Combo Sleepers: Combination sleepers need very specific things from a mattress, as they tend to sleep in various positions throughout the night. They need contouring and support, but they also need a mattress that is easy to move around on. We’d say that the Silk & Snow mattress is good for average combination sleepers, but heavier combo sleepers should choose a mattress that doesn’t sink quite as much.

Company Background

Silk & Snow has been making Canadian mattresses since 2017. While they may not have the history that other companies have in the Canadian mattress market, they have quickly risen to prominence for their products. All of their products, including mattresses, bedding, and more, are high-quality, responsibly sourced, and eco-conscious when possible.

There are two other mattresses in addition to the Silk & Snow. They also offer the Silk & Snow Hybrid, which has two different firmness options and a zoned pocket coil base. The Silk & Snow Organic is a fully organic latex mattress that comes in three comfortable firmness options, too.

Commitment to the Environment

As a company, Silk & Snow adopts an eco-conscious manufacturing commitment. They use responsible sourcing for their products, with Canadian products when possible. All materials are collected sustainably, and they work with Veritree to offer you the opportunity to plant a tree at checkout.

Aside from this, Silk & Snow offers a completely organic mattress with the Silk & Snow Organic mattress. You can see where each material in each of their products is sourced right on the product page.

Silk & Snow vs Other Silk & Snow Mattresses

Silk & Snow offers two other mattresses in its lineup, both of which are hybrid options. To help you determine which mattress is right for you, we will compare those mattresses to the basic all-foam Silk & Snow. There is an option for everyone from this company!

Silk & Snow vs Silk & Snow Hybrid

The Silk & Snow Hybrid is a remarkably comfortable mattress that uses a layer of pocket coils instead of high-density foam for the base of the mattress. It offers strong lumbar support and better alignment at a price that beats most other hybrids on the Canadian market. It also comes with all of the great policies that make Silk & Snow a well-loved brand. You can choose two firmness options for the Silk & Snow Hybrid.

Heavier users may prefer the Silk & Snow Hybrid, as the stronger support leads to less sinking and sagging. It performs well in most areas, including edge support. However, the Silk & Snow Hybrid may perform noticeably worse when it comes to motion isolation. The original Silk & Snow mattress provides better pressure relief, too – but loses this edge when you choose the Plush version of the Silk & Snow Hybrid,

Silk & Snow vs Silk & Snow Organic

The Silk & Snow Organic is a hybrid option that uses natural, organic materials like cotton and latex. There are three firmness options, with increasing plush mattresses that build upon the basic Firm version. It’s an eco-conscious mattress that prioritizes safe materials that are certified organic and safe for your family.

Eco-conscious Canadians will love the Silk & Snow Organic more than the original Silk & Snow. It offers extreme lumbar support, edge support, and pressure relief that helps you stay comfortable. However, it doesn’t offer great motion isolation and comes at a much steeper price than the Silk & Snow mattress.

Competing Canadian Mattress Comparisons

The Silk & Snow is just one of the great all-foam mattresses available in Canada. Since it offers a similar construction and performance as some of the other options here, we compared it to two of its most popular competitors. We’ll look at how it stacks up to the Douglas Original and the Endy mattress.

Testing Dumbbells on the Douglas Mattress
Testing Dumbbells on the Douglas Mattress

Silk & Snow vs Douglas Original

The Douglas Original mattress is one of the best-selling and longest-established all-foam mattresses in Canada. It offers a ton of great performance features, some of which even outshine the Silk & Snow mattress. It’s easy to move around on top of the mattress, and it offers great pressure relief and temperature control on top of that. The price is around the same as the Silk & Snow, so it can be difficult to choose between them.

The Douglas Original performed better for us than the Silk & Snow in many categories, but there are a few benefits that the Silk & Snow has over the Douglas. The first is bounce. The Silk & Snow is bouncier and offers better pressure relief overall, mostly due to the high-density materials.

Silk & Snow vs Endy

The Endy is an inexpensive all-foam option that is temperature-neutral and offers great motion isolation. This mattress is known for its proprietary Endy Comfort Foam. This foam has an open-cell construction, reducing motion transfer and heat throughout the surface of the mattress. This mattress offers better response, ease of movement, and temperature control than the Silk & Snow Mattress.

The Silk & Snow wins when it comes to motion isolation and pressure relief, though. Because of how often these mattresses fill in the gaps for each other, it’s safe to say that the Endy mattress and the Silk & Snow mattress fulfil different niches. The one you choose should depend on the performance that is most important to you.

Should You Buy a Silk & Snow Mattress?

If you need a quality mattress on a budget, we recommend the Silk & Snow mattress. It’s inexpensive but offers a host of features that other mattresses at this price point don’t. It also comes with a 365-night trial, so you can try it without any great personal risk. It’s easy to return so you can rest easy knowing it’s all taken care of if it isn’t the right choice for you.

We think that this mattress is ideal for light and average side sleepers, as well as those who need better motion isolation to stay asleep throughout the night. Those who need better pressure relief will find it here, though hot sleepers may want to avoid it.

Highlights of the Silk & Snow Mattress

The Silk & Snow Mattress is a surprisingly solid pick, especially for an all-foam mattress that falls into the realm of a ‘budget’ model. Though it performs worse than we would like in some categories, it does a great job in others. For example, it features great pressure relief and motion isolation when you consider the size and materials used within the mattress.

As a company, Silk & Snow stands apart because of its commitment to transparency. Being able to see where each of the Canadian-made materials comes from offers some amazing benefits, including an assurance that your mattress is well-made and benefits the Canadian economy. Their donation policy and focus on the environment make it easy to recommend purchasing from them.

Areas for Improvement

There are a few areas where the Silk & Snow Mattress could improve. While the scores for temperature control and edge support weren’t terrible, they can leave some Canadians feeling like the performance isn’t quite there. If you sleep hot, you will need a mattress with better temperature control features. This mattress lacks breathability, and while the cooling gel foam is enough to keep higher temperatures at bay, those who need a little more performance will find themselves overheating here.

The thin profile also makes it a bit uncomfortable for heavier sleepers, though the high-density foam makes up for it in some ways. There’s also the issue of edge support, which may be lacking for heavier Canadians.

Our Recommendations for the Silk & Snow Mattress

The Silk & Snow is a great all-foam mattress for those on a budget. Still, it shouldn’t be dismissed as a less impressive mattress because of its lower price. It uses high-quality materials, including high-density foams, to reduce discomfort and still promote ease of motion. This mattress performed extremely well when it came to pressure relief and motion isolation. It’s comfortable, especially for those who sleep on their sides. Heavier sleepers may need a thicker mattress, but most will be comfortable here.

We liked this mattress for couples, side sleepers, and back sleepers. Its medium-firm feel makes it almost universally appealing to most Canadians, though some users will need more. There are a few areas where performance could be improved, especially temperature control and edge support. However, these scores were not terrible enough to deter us from recommending the mattresses.
