Simba is a well-known company that makes mattresses throughout the UK and Canada. Going into our review, we already thought that this mattress might perform well. However, we were surprised by how well it performed in some areas, as well as the sustainability of the materials used to create it. We were surprised to see how these materials worked together to create a mattress that performed well in nearly every area.

This mattress is a luxury organic hybrid that uses recyclable and sustainable materials. Proprietary foams, eco-conscious coils, and two layers of conical micro-coils create a feel that you won’t find anywhere else. Here, you’ll find better motion isolation than most mattresses on the Canadian market. This mattress also features outstanding pressure relief, bounce, and temperature control. 

Our Methodology

At Slumber, we see a lot of mattresses. We want to give all of them a fair shake, so we use the same process to test and rank all of our mattresses. Mattress Details

The Simba Organic mattress is one of the best eco-conscious options for Canadians. All of the materials used in this mattress are natural and recyclable, from natural latex to recyclable pocket coils. All of the materials work together to provide better airflow while keeping motion transfer to a minimum. Since these are two of the biggest factors we look for when testing a mattress, we were pleasantly surprised by its performance. 

There are a total of three coil layers within this mattress. Two of them are Aerocoil comfort springs, which are compact conical coils that emphasize contouring. These coils create better pressure relief at the middle of the mattress, while the zoned base pocket springs create extreme support. Together, they also help create more airflow than foam alone.  

When it comes to performance, this mattress got great scores in most areas. Even the areas where it didn’t perform as well ranked better than some of the other mattresses we’ve seen, including areas like ease of movement. While this mattress isn’t the easiest to move around on, it isn’t the most difficult either. In areas like cooling, motion isolation, and pressure relief, the Simba Organic performed excellently.

Though it is one of the best bed in a box mattresses in Canada, it can also set you back a lot if you have a together budget. A Queen will run you $2,999 before discounts or promotions, but there are usually sales or events that knock a few hundred dollars off that price. 

The Simba Organic comes in five standard mattress sizes, running from Twin to King. There is no California King option, so those who need a longer bed may want to choose a different option. It also isn’t available in Split King, but purchasing two Twin XL mattresses gives you the same level of comfort and sustainability for your split adjustable bed frame.

Mattress Construction

The Simba Organic mattress uses five layers of foam and coils within a certified organic cover. These materials are proprietary and blend to create a feel you won’t find elsewhere.

• The Cover: The cover of the Simba Organic mattress is made of a breathable Certified Organic Cotton material. Though the top cover is not removable, the bottom of the mattress uses a 3D mesh border. Up to 75% of the mesh material is made from recycled water bottles. Plus, it creates better air flow and reduces heat.
• The 1st Layer: The first layer within the mattress is natural wool. This hypoallergenic layer acts as a natural fire barrier and keeps you comfortable throughout the seasons. Wool can be warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, with regulatory properties that aim to reduce discomfort no matter what the ambient temperature is.
• The 2nd Layer:  A layer of SimbaTex, a proprietary foam from Simba, works to reduce temperatures and increase comfort. This foam is open-cell and graphite-infused, with more airflow than standard memory foam. It’s also great at relieving pressure.
• The 3rd Layer: The third layer is two layers in one. Here, you’ll find dual layers of Aerocoil springs, which are conical micro-coils. Up to 5,000 of these flexible coils help with increased airflow, better pressure relief, and full body support. 
• The 4th Layer: Nestled between the two coil layers, a layer of natural Talalay latex reduces pressure points and adds even more breathability. This layer cushions deep pressure points keeps the coil layers from creating uncomfortable firmness and helps with consistent support and contouring.
• The 5th Layer: A core of up to 1,000 pocket coils creates the SupportCore base. These springs are completely recyclable. Five comfort zones reduce pressure and promote better support, with firmer coils at your lower back and softer coils in areas most likely to feel pressure points. The coils are also enclosed to promote stronger edge support. 

The blend of organic and proprietary materials used within the Simba Green Hybrid makes it unique in feel and performance. Layers of natural wool, double Aerocoil springs, and multiple certified materials create peace of mind no matter how you sleep.

Mattress Performance and Testing

We tested the Simba Organic mattress for various features, including those that Canadians value most. We looked at three main features that Canadians prefer, including temperature control, motion isolation, and edge support. Here’s how the mattress performed in these areas.

Temperature Control (9.1/10)

If you wake up with night sweats, you aren’t alone. Overheating is a big problem for all Canadians. It’s a common problem that can make your sleep less restful and more uncomfortable. A mattress with cooling features may be able to help, which is why we prioritized cooling when testing these mattresses. If you sleep extremely hot, a rating of at least an 8 out of 10 is essential to remain comfortable throughout the night.

The materials used within the Simba Organic mattress are all extremely breathable, from the foam layers to the coils used to create strong support. This means that the mattress overall allows more airflow to pass through, eliminating higher temperatures as they happen. Our heat mapping showed that as soon as any heat built up within the mattress, it was dispelled again. Some of our hottest testers still had issues with heat within the mattress, but the majority of our testing team said it performed fine.

Motion Isolation (10/10)

If you share a bed with a restless partner, motion isolation is important. You may wake up often when your partner tosses and turns, which can disrupt your sleep and make it difficult to get comfortable. We test motion isolation with multiple methods, including practical tests and ball-drop tests. If you are a light sleeper or have a restless partner, a rating of at least a 7 or 8 out of 10 is necessary to get the most out of your mattress.

There are only a few mattresses we’ve looked at that completely isolate motion. Many mattresses allow smaller vibrations through, and hybrids are especially bad at controlling how much motion transfers from one side of the bed to the other. The Simba Organic mattress, despite being a hybrid, controls motion extremely well. Throughout our testing phases, there was never any indication that motion was reaching the other side of the bed. This was true with heavy weights dropped on the mattress and with our practical tester experiments. Motion isolation here is the best it can be.

Edge Support (8.7/10)

Many mattresses, regardless of construction, will lose support at the edges. The level of support sometimes falls off and the edges can sink or sag as a result. If you sit on the edge of the bed in the morning or tend to sleep near the edges, edge support is crucial for a comfortable experience. If you need strong edge support, a rating of at least 7 out of 10 is best.

For the most part, the Simba Organic mattress performed well. Edge support is one of the areas where it didn’t perform as well as we’d hoped, especially considering its performance throughout the rest of our testing. While the edge support isn’t poor, it doesn’t hold up to Canadians who often sit or sleep near the edge of the bed. This is especially true for heavier Canadians. Our heavier testers often found that they felt prone to sliding off the bed if they sat near the edge.

Firmness and Feel of the Simba Organic Mattress

The Simba Organic Mattress is a medium-firm hybrid. We rate mattresses on a variety of factors, including how the mattress felt during our tests. While we usually take the manufacturer’s firmness rating into account, the score we develop is based on our own research and time with the mattress. Our rating system works on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being extremely soft and 10 being extremely hard.

The Simba Organic mattress is a 6.5 on our firmness scale. This is the perfect firmness for a medium firm option. With strong support from the coils and contouring from the micro-coil layers, this mattress has everything you need to stay comfortable. Even our heaviest sleepers said they felt comfortable, with enough pressure relief to reduce discomfort in every sleeping position.

Even with all of the firmness and performance ratings we can give, a mattress may still feel different for you. There are a few factors that influence how a mattress feels, including your body type and sleeping position. These factors make it difficult to determine how a mattress can work if you don’t try it yourself, but our diverse team of testers has you covered.

Weight Considerations

Your body type can have an impact on how a mattress feels. Lighter Canadians (weighing less than 130 pounds) may not sink into the mattress at all, reducing the effectiveness of the materials. On the other hand, heavier Canadians (weighing more than 230 pounds) may sink too far into the mattress and receive reduced pressure relief. 

The Simba Organic mattress works well for most sleepers. A lighter sleeper may need a slightly softer mattress to stay comfortable. Our heaviest sleepers mentioned light pressure, but nothing that would be too uncomfortable over time. Overall, this mattress should work fine for most body types. 

Sleeping Positions

Above nearly anything else, the way you sleep may impact how the mattress feels for you. Each sleeping position has different needs, which means that the same mattress won’t work for all of them. Our testers in each sleeping position noted how the Simba Organic worked for them.

• Side Sleepers: Side sleeping is one of the most common sleeping positions in Canada. Most mattresses, therefore, are made with side sleepers in mind. They need better alignment and pressure relief to stay comfortable and may prefer a medium or medium firm mattress. The pressure relief and support in the Simba Organic is top-notch, making it a great option for side sleepers. 
• Back Sleepers: Back sleepers need a firmer mattress that hugs their body and offers good alignment. Thankfully, the pressure relief and alignment on the Simba Organic mattress make it great for back sleepers, particularly heavier back sleepers. It has good contouring due to the double layer of micro-coils.
• Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleepers need strong support and a softer top. The Simba Organic is great for side sleepers of all body types, but lighter sleepers may need a softer mattress to remain comfortable. Still, the strong support from the coil layer makes this mattress comfortable for stomach sleepers.
• Combo Sleepers: Combination sleepers need a mattress that works well for most other sleeping positions. Because they move around often, they also need a mattress that is easy to move around on. The Simba Organic mattress got a lower score in responsiveness and ease of movement than we liked, so combination sleepers should probably skip this option.

Delivery, Sleep Trials, and Returns

Simba is a UK-based company, but all mattresses ordered within Canada are made and shipped from Canadian warehouses. Most in-stock mattresses will arrive at your home in 5 days or less. You can choose a free White Glove delivery service, which sets the mattress up in your home for you. With other companies, this service is an additional charge. Simba offers it for free, however. Though shipping is free, there may be some exceptions to remote locations, including the Canadian Territories. It’s wise to check your specific address before getting your mattress shipped, as this can help you determine whether you need to pay for shipping. 

If you don’t like the mattress, you can exchange it between the 15th and 99th night of your sleep trial. Simba doesn’t offer refunds, and you can only exchange the mattress for another option offered by Sleep Country. You will have to pay the difference if the new mattress costs more, and a $50 exchange fee will be due for delivery of the new mattress and pick up of the old one.

It offers good temperature control and pressure relief, with similar pitfalls as the Simba Organic mattress. Of course, the materials here aren’t organic, but they are eco-conscious and proprietary. 

The Simba 2500 performs the same or worse in most of our performance areas. It receives the same temperature control score as the Simba Organic, but it has slightly lower motion isolation, bounce, and response. The only place where the Simba 2500 has a slight edge is with edge support, though the difference is not notable. It’s less expensive, which may make a difference for you. 

Simba Organic vs Simba 5000 Mattress

The Simba 5000 Pro Flex is the most luxurious hybrid that Simba offers in its non-organic category. This mattress is not made with fully organic materials, but it has a similar construction and performance to the Simba Organic. Here, you’ll find the same great motion isolation, pressure relief, and bounce scores. They respond about the same, and both use the dual layers of conical micro-coils to great effect.

However, the Simba 5000 Pro Flex wins out in temperature control. There is a noticeable difference, though it may not seem too impressive to some. On the other hand, Simba Organic has better edge support. Considering that this is one of the areas where Simba Organic tested poorly, this was surprising. If eco-conscious, organic materials matter to you, Simba Organic is the way to go. If not, the Simba 5000 would serve you fine, as their performance is nearly comparable.

If you have the extra funds, it’s worth trying the Simba Organic. The 100-night sleep trial allows you to exchange this mattress for another option from Sleep Country if you don’t like it. This makes it worth trying out if you don’t mind paying a little more for quality when you purchase the mattress initially. It’s also worth mentioning that frequent sales and promotions may reduce this price to a more manageable amount.
