Casper Atlas Hybrid Review

A Hybrid Mattress That Makes Movement Easy

The Casper Atlas is one of two new mattresses from Casper. This company is a household name in the sleep industry, and their mattresses are usually made to be luxurious as a result of their brand image. However, the Atlas and the Dawn are made to be extremely affordable in comparison to other mattresses in Casper’s extensive lineup. The Atlas is their budget hybrid, with strong steel coils and layers of comfortable foam to help you stay aligned and comfortable throughout the night.

This mattress excels when it comes to ease of movement and bounce, with strong support that will be comfortable for most sleepers. If you are on a budget, you can trust Casper to deliver a mattress that helps you get better sleep without breaking the bank.

Our Methodology

At Slumber, we test all of our mattresses using the same gauntlet of tests. We look at every aspect of the mattress, from the materials used in its construction to the way it performs in various different circumstances. We use teams of testers in all sleeping positions, of all body types, and with a range of different preferences. Their feedback helps shape how we think about the mattress’s performance.

Then, we use our own testing methods to try out a variety of scenarios. We look at how a mattress holds up with pressure relief, edge support, and temperature control using our diagnostic tools. Then, we compare those scores to our tester’s feedback to create a composite score based on all of the information we have. This is how we determine how a mattress will work for you.

Mattress Details

The Casper Atlas uses 3” of comfortable foams on top of a strong steel coil base to provide both comfort and support. This mattress is bouncy, promoting additional feedback for those who value it. It provides moderate performance in most areas, which puts it in a good position for a hybrid mattress. This is especially true because of its lower price point when compared to other hybrid options on the Canadian market.

While this mattress performs slightly better than average when it comes to cooling, pressure relief, and edge support, it performs much worse in motion isolation tests. Because it is a hybrid mattress, the coils carry some degree of motion across them. Unfortunately, this means that this mattress isn’t the best for those who need a still mattress to stay asleep. Restless couples won’t do well on this mattress.

The comfort layers are adequate for most Canadians, especially lightweight users. However, the pressure relief they offer may not be enough for some sleepers. If you need deep pressure relief, consider choosing a mattress that has thicker comfort layers or high-density materials.

Casper Atlas Hybrid Mattress Prices and Sizes

Most of Casper’s mattresses are luxurious and costly. Most of them are out-of-budget for most Canadians, but the Atlas Hybrid is one of their more affordable options. This hybrid is cheaper than most other options on the Canadian market, with only a few contemporary mattresses at a similar price point. This mattress is durable and comfortable, with performance levels that are good enough for most Canadians.

The Atlas Hybrid is available in six standard mattress sizes. It is 10” high and the prices range from $899 to $1499. The Queen mattress is just $1199, which isn’t bad for one of the most popular sizes on the Canadian mattress market.

Mattress Construction

This hybrid mattress uses 4 layers of foam and coils to create strong support and a comfortable top. Here’s how the layers stack up.

  • The Cover: The cover is a stretchy knit material that is comfortable to the touch. This cover can be removed and washed at home, which puts it a step above most similar options in this price bracket. They are smooth and comfortable, allowing them to work flawlessly with just about any sheet set you want to use.
  • The 1st Layer: The top layer of the Atlas Hybrid is made with Casper’s Signature Foam. This material is responsive and bouncy, with enough sinkage to be comfortable without allowing you to feel as though you are stuck in the mattress. While most mattresses suck you in, this option allows you to rest comfortably on top of the construction.
  • The 2nd Layer: A second layer of transition foam helps reduce pressure from the firm coils below. This layer helps align your body and reduce deeper pressure for a much more comfortable outcome.
  • The 3rd Layer: The bottom layer is made with Casper’s Flex Coils. These coils move with you to provide strong support where you need it. These springs are breathable, with individual pockets to reduce motion transfer and compress individually for your comfort. This layer also includes Casper Edge Support, a system that helps bolster the edges of the mattress to reduce discomfort when you sit or sleep at the edge of the mattress.
  • The 4th Layer: The Casper Atlas Hybrid has a firm, supportive layer that keeps the mattress from sinking over time. This additional layer of foam reduces sagging and helps the mattress retain its shape long after other mattresses may have sagged.

The Casper Atlas has a lot of bounce for those who prefer that. If you want feedback from your mattress when you move around, this mattress can provide it. It also has good edge support and great ease of movement, making it ideal for those who need to move around a lot in order to get comfortable at night.

Mattress Performance Test Results

Our test results for the Casper Atlas Hybrid came from a range of testers in a variety of situations, all with different body types and sleeping preferences. We worked to determine how the mattress would work for you. After comparing the test results from all of our different testing phases, here’s how the mattress works in a few key areas.

Temperature Control (8.1/10)

Do you often wake up with night sweats? If you overheat at night and wake up sweaty and uncomfortable, you aren’t the only one. Many Canadians suffer from night sweats, and many of them could improve their sleep if they chose a mattress with better temperature control. Temperature control is achieved using a blend of materials, active cooling measures, and more. A score of at least 8 is essential for those who sleep warm, though hot sleepers may need more intensive cooling measures and a higher score.

The Casper Atlas Hybrid has breathable coils that funnel cooler air up through the mattress. This helps with some measure of temperature control, but it may not be enough for those who sleep extremely hot. The layers of foam on top of the coil layer prevent most breathability from being effective, which means the surface of the mattress is warmer than we’d like. Our testers reported some heat discomfort, and heat mapping showed that higher temperatures had nowhere to go once they built up inside the mattress.

Motion Isolation (7/10)

Canadians who sleep with a partner, particularly a restless one, know how difficult it can be to sleep soundly when your partner won’t stop moving around. Some mattresses transfer all that motion to your side of the bed, which can keep you up. We tested motion isolation in a variety of ways, including ball drop tests, practical tests with our testing team, and measuring how much movement we could see and detect with our equipment. A rating of at least 7.5 is ideal for those who sleep with restless partners.

As a hybrid mattress with few comfort layers, the Casper Atlas Hybrid doesn’t do a great job at isolating motion. This mattress moves a lot, especially when you are moving around. The additional bounce throughout the mattress doesn’t do it many favours when it comes to motion isolation, because the feedback is often transferred to your side of the bed. Our testers noticed a lot of movement, and we didn’t like the results from our simulation testing phases.

Edge Support (8/10)

Most mattresses lose support as you approach the edge of the bed. The support level falls off, leaving a sinking, sagging edge to contend with. If you sit or sleep near the edge of the bed regularly, you know how important it is to have strong edge support. A rating of at least 7 out of 10 is best for those who need strong, reinforced edges.

The Casper Atlas has passable edge support, though it performs worse than its all-foam counterpart in this area. While this layer has some bolstered edges in the form of edge support foam around the coils, it doesn’t do enough to reduce discomfort and sagging when you sit at the edge of the bed. Some of our testers were fine with the level of edge support while others complained that it made their mattress uncomfortable.

Firmness and Feel of the Casper Atlas Hybrid Mattress

The Casper Atlas is a medium-firm hybrid mattress. We use a ranking scale to assign each mattress we review a score between 1 and 10. A mattress rated a 1 is extremely soft, while a mattress rated a 10 is extremely firm. This mattress is about a 6 when we consider our scale, which makes it a medium-firm mattress. This is a little softer than some of the other hybrids we’ve reviewed in the past.

Firmness Chart 6
Casper’s Atlas Hybrid is around a 6 on our firmness scale.

While this mattress has a lot of support through the coils, the comfort layers are only 3” thick. This may present some pressure problems for side sleepers and heavier sleepers, but most Canadians should be okay. Over time, the mattress may develop indents that can lead to uncomfortable pressure points.

It offers quick response and deep lumbar support, which allows it to be suitable for a range of Canadians. It has a lot of bounce and poor motion isolation, however. This means that you shouldn’t feel trapped in the mattress, and it should be easy to move around.

Performance for Different Weights and Sleeping Preferences

Our scores and testing results can give you a good idea of how a mattress will perform, but mattresses will always perform differently for different sleepers. There are a few factors to consider when you think about how a mattress will work for you. These include your body type and your preferred sleeping position. Let’s look at how our testers across these different categories found the Casper Atlas Hybrid.

Weight Considerations

Body type is one of the things you must consider when you think about how a mattress will feel. If you weigh more than average (230 pounds, as defined by the mattress industry), the materials used within the mattress will yield to you more readily. This means more sinkage and, for some, less pressure relief. It’s important that sleepers with larger body types find a mattress that adequately supports them without adding additional pressure.

The Casper Atlas Hybrid is a thinner hybrid mattress, at just 10”. This means that the comfort layers are only 3”, and heavier sleepers may become uncomfortable quickly. It wouldn’t be unheard of for a heavier sleeper to feel the firm coils below the coil layers, creating more pressure and discomfort.

As a result, we can recommend this mattress to lighter side sleepers, average stomach sleepers, and average back sleepers. Some heavier back and stomach sleepers may find some comfort here, but that would be up to your personal preference.

Sleeping Positions

Each sleeping position requires different features from their mattress. They need different levels of support, comfort, and sinkage to feel truly comfortable. A single mattress rarely fits all the needs of every sleeper, so it’s important to take this into account before you choose a mattress.

  • Side Sleepers: Side sleepers need alignment and pressure relief. A hybrid mattress is usually great at both of these, leaving side sleepers more satisfied here than on an all-foam mattress. However, the Casper Atlas Hybrid doesn’t offer a thick enough comfort layer to make most side sleepers comfortable. Lighter side sleepers may be okay, but average and heavier side sleepers may struggle to find comfortable pressure relief.
  • Back Sleepers: Back sleepers require a little bit of contouring and a lot of support to stay comfortable. This mattress is great for this purpose, as it can help reduce strain on your joints and lower back. The Casper Atlas has moderate sinkage for most, but heavier Canadians should still choose a mattress with thicker comfort layers.
  • Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleepers tend to prefer a soft top and strong lumbar support. The Casper Atlas can provide both of these things, though the support may be a little softer than most stomach sleepers prefer. All but the heaviest stomach sleepers can find some comfort on the Casper Atlas, even if it isn’t specifically suited to them.
  • Combination Sleeper: Above all, combination sleepers need to be able to move around easily. Thankfully, ease of movement is one of the areas where the Casper Atlas performs best. This mattress responds incredibly quickly, allowing you to change position without feeling stuck in the mattress. While there are some sleeping positions that won’t feel as comfortable on this mattress, it’s great for the most part.

Delivery, Sleep Trials, & Returns

Though Casper is a North American company, all of its Canadian mattresses ship quickly from domestic warehouses. Most Casper mattresses will arrive at your door within 3 to 7 business days. There are some areas where shipping may take longer; in these areas, a shipping fee is usually observed. These mostly include the Canadian Territories. If you aren’t sure if your address needs a fee for delivery, you can always check with Casper’s customer service team.

Casper gives you 100 nights to determine if you’ll like the Casper Atlas. After the first 30 nights, you can initiate a return if you don’t like it. This gives you plenty of time to determine if it’s the right choice for you, even after your body has time to adjust to it. If you decide to return it, returns are free. Used mattresses are donated to charity. However, you will need to return the mattress during a scheduled pick-up time. At this time, you will need to be home.

If you decide to keep the mattress past your sleep trial, you’ll have access to a 10-year limited warranty that covers faulty materials and workmanship. Reviewing the warranty before you make a purchase is always a good idea.

  • Shipping Cost: Free (with some exceptions)
  • Time to Delivery: 3 to 7 business days
  • Courier: Various
  • Sleep Trial Length: 100 nights
  • Warranty: 10 Year Limited
  • Ease of Return: Free pick up and full refund after an initial 30-day period.

Company Background

Casper is an extremely popular mattress company that has become a household name in sleep. In addition to North American mattresses, Casper makes bedding, pillows, duvets, sheets, bedroom furniture, and even dog beds. Casper is one of the best companies to consult for comfort. Most of their products include proprietary and innovative materials that you won’t find elsewhere, so it’s worth checking their mattresses out if you haven’t before.

Casper has some great company policies, including used mattress donations and sleep trial incentives. They are also always changing how they do business to match industry standards. Plus, they are one of the few online mattress companies in Canada that maintain showrooms where you can see and test each mattress for yourself.

Commitment to the Environment

Casper doesn’t have an overt commitment to the environment, which may be a sticking point for some people. However, they use a lot of responsibly sourced materials. Some of the covers used on Casper mattresses are made from recycled plastic bottles. Each foam is CertiPUR-US certified, with a focus on protecting the ozone layer. Casper is a great company with more eco-conscious options than you might believe.

Casper Atlas Hybrid vs Other Casper Mattresses

Casper has an extensive mattress lineup of mostly luxury products, so it’s worth comparing the Casper Atlas Hybrid to everything else Casper has on offer. While it may be tricky to compare this mattress to options that offer better features and a much higher price, it’s also comparable to Casper’s other budget model. Here’s how the Casper Atlas stacks up to the budget all-foam Casper Dawn, as well as the popular and luxurious Casper Wave Hybrid Snow.

Casper Atlas Hybrid vs Casper Dawn

A side sleeper on the Casper Dawn Mattress

The Casper Dawn is the all-foam budget mattress that Casper introduced alongside the Atlas Hybrid. This mattress uses foam for support, with a slightly firmer feel and a supportive base. This mattress prioritizes motion isolation over all else, with enough dampening that you’ll hardly feel anything from the other side of the bed.

The Dawn and the Atlas are almost opposite mattresses. While the cost is similar, they excel in different areas. The Dawn is better at motion isolation and pressure relief, while the Atlas Hybrid has better overall support and superior temperature control. The one you will prefer comes down to the features you value most in your mattress.

Casper Atlas Hybrid vs Casper Wave Hybrid Snow

A closer look at the unique layers used in the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow
A closer look at the unique layers used in the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow

The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow is one of Casper’s most luxurious mattresses. It uses a host of proprietary materials, including zoned foam, supportive gel pods, and foam with varying thicknesses across the span of the mattress to deliver support where you need it. This is another hybrid mattress, so it uses strong coil support to keep Canadians comfortable.

Since both mattresses are hybrids, they have the same levels of poor motion isolation that we usually see in hybrids. The Casper Atlas has significantly worse temperature control than the Wave Hybrid Snow, which is focused on lumbar support and reducing higher temperatures throughout the mattress. If temperature control is one of the features you value most, this option is definitely right for you.

Competing Canadian Mattress Comparisons

There are a lot of companies on the Canadian market, and some have been around for years. How do popular mattresses from other brands compare with the Casper Atlas Hybrid? We compared it to two popular hybrids, the Logan & Cove Mattress and the Emma Hybrid Premium Plus.

Casper Atlas Hybrid vs Logan & Cove Frontier Mattress

The Logan & Cove Frontier, ready to be tested
The Logan & Cove Frontier, ready to be tested

The Logan & Cove Frontier is Logan & Cove’s premier hybrid mattress. This option uses a comfortable Euro-top combined with strong, zoned coils to deliver pressure relief and comfort. This mattress performs well across most of our performance areas, with great edge support, pressure relief, and temperature control.

However, the Casper Atlas wins out when it comes to bounce and ease of movement. While the Frontier is better in nearly every other aspect, it’s more difficult to move around on and provides minimal feedback. If those factors are the most important to you, the Casper Atlas is a better choice.

Casper Atlas Hybrid vs Emma Hybrid Premium Plus

Front view of the entire Emma hybrid mattress
Front view of the entire Emma hybrid mattress

Emma’s Hybrid Premium Plus is a luxury hybrid that performed extremely well for us. This mattress uses a host of unique and proprietary foams to reduce discomfort, add support, and keep you extremely comfortable. It definitely has an edge when it comes to motion isolation, as this mattress offers some of the best motion isolation we’ve ever seen, especially in a hybrid mattress.

In fact, there’s no area where the Caspar Atlas Hybrid can outperform the Emma Hybrid except for price. The Emma Hybrid Premium Plus is nearly twice the price of the Atlas Hybrid. Whether you think the additional performance is worth the extra money is a personal choice.

Should You Buy the Casper Atlas Hybrid Mattress?

Buying the Casper Atlas Hybrid carries no risk thanks to the 100-night sleep trial. You can return it for a full refund if you don’t like it, which makes it a great option for those who are still on the fence. If you are on a budget, this hybrid is worth checking out. Otherwise, you should purchase the Casper Atlas Hybrid if you want a more responsive hybrid with a lot of bounce and average performance in most other areas. On the other hand, you should avoid this mattress if you need better motion isolation to sleep well.

Highlights of the Casper Atlas Hybrid Mattress

For a budget mattress, this hybrid has a lot going for it. While the cooling isn’t the best we’ve seen, it isn’t terrible by any means. The response time is extremely fast, and the bounce is great for those who prefer it. Edge support and pressure relief are middling at best, and other mattresses perform much better in these areas than the Casper Atlas Hybrid.

Areas for Improvement

This mattress has a lot of room for improvement, but many of its issues are due to its budget constraints. You’ll find that motion isolation is lacking in this mattress, which leads to a lot of transfer. The thinner comfort layers make pressure relief inevitable, especially for heavy sleepers. Both areas could be improved to make the mattress more comfortable for a wider range of customers.

Our Recommendations for the Casper Atlas Hybrid Mattress

The Casper Atlas Hybrid Mattress is a great hybrid option for those on a budget. We recommend it to lightweight sleepers, those who need to move around a lot, and those who prefer some bounce. However, the thinner comfort layer makes it impossible for us to recommend this mattress to heavier sleepers, especially those weighing over 230 pounds in any sleeping position.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the weight limit of the Casper Atlas Hybrid Mattress?

Unlike most other options on the Canadian market, Casper mattresses don’t have a weight limit. This means that they are suitable for users and couples of all sizes without worrying about exceeding a limit set by the manufacturer.

Is the Casper Atlas Hybrid good for back pain?

The Casper Atlas Hybrid uses a pocket coil layer to reduce discomfort and increase support. However, the Flex Coils used here aren’t zoned, so they aren’t firmer under your lower back or softer under your shoulders. You get the same level of support throughout. Also, the mattress may be too soft overall to feel comfortable for those with back pain.

How long does it take the Casper Atlas Hybrid to regain its original shape after unboxing?

It can take between 24 and 48 hours for the mattress to return to its intended shape after unboxing it. This mattress is rolled up tightly in a box for shipping, which means that it needs time to expand before you can use it. If you use it before the mattress is fully expanded, you will not get the promised support front he mattress.

Does the Casper Atlas Hybrid off-gas?

Like all mattresses that use foam, the Casper Atlas Hybrid has an off-gassing period. This may last up to a week and includes a faint odour that is not harmful. If this odour bothers you, make sure to keep the mattress in a well-ventilated area and give it plenty of time to off-gas before use.

Is this mattress good for couples?

The Casper Atlas doesn’t have great motion isolation, so some couples may not find that it fits their needs. If you often wake up while your partner tosses and turns, this mattress might not offer enough when it comes to motion isolation.

How much is shipping for the Casper Atlas Hybrid?

The Casper Atlas Hybrid ships free to most locations, though some remote locations may require a shipping fee. Locations in the Canadian territories are more likely to require a fee to ship the mattress, but the amount may depend on your address.

How often should I buy a new mattress?

While most experts recommend buying a new mattress every 5 to 7 years, the Casper Atlas is rated to last at least 10 years with an appropriate foundation. While the materials may not feel the same over time, it should take at least 10 years for the mattress to become uncomfortable.
