Best Firm Mattress in Canada

Firm mattresses are difficult to find, especially when most of the options on the Canadian market are aimed at the widest range of sleepers possible. Since firm mattresses aren’t as popular as medium-firm options, there are fewer to choose from. Thankfully, we’ve combed through the available options to find you our favourites for the best firm mattresses in Canada. There is an option on this list for everyone who appreciates a firm mattress, regardless of their other sleeping preferences.

Our Scoring Process for Firm Mattresses

Firm mattresses should meet a specific set of criteria to be considered firm. We look at scoring and feedback about how each mattress feels, as well as how it worked for those who specifically like firm mattresses. We took all of the performance scores we had at our disposal to create a score that encompassed all of them.

Our Tests for Firm Mattresses

We tested our firm mattresses in much the same way as we tested all of our mattresses. We put them through simulation tests as well as practical tests, using both our equipment and our team of testers. We measured the results of motion isolation tests, temperature control tests, edge support tests, and more.

How We Chose These Firm Mattresses

The firm mattresses that made our list were selected after a tireless gauntlet of tests, performed by both our team of testers and our at-home testing team. The mattresses that made this list were the ones that performed the best over multiple categories, including those we felt were most important for firm mattresses.

Editor’s Choice – Logan & Cove Frontier

The Logan & Cove Frontier, ready to be tested
  • Temperature Control: 9.2/10
  • Motion Isolation: 7.1/10
  • Edge Support: 9.7/10
  • Pressure Relief: 9.4/10
  • Bounce: 9.0/10
  • Eco: 9.2/10
  • Response: 9.0/10
  • Ease of Movement: 9.3/10
  • Policies: 9.5/10

Highlights

  • Outstanding edge support for mattress-wide support
  • A 365-night trial gives you plenty of time to try the mattress
  • Dual coil layers provide great pressure relief and firm support

Our editor’s choice for the best firm mattress in Canada is the Logan & Cove Frontier. This option is medium firm, which means it offers the same support you’ll find in firm mattresses. However, the top is a comfortable, plush Euro-top that relieves pressure and helps you get to sleep faster. This mattress has dual coil layers; one helps with contouring, while the other works to align your spine. If you need a firmer mattress because of back pain, this mattress may help you sleep more comfortably.

Logan & Cove Frontier Mattress Construction

  • Quilted Euro-Top Cover. The top of the mattress features a plush Euro-top cover, which includes hollow-fibre fill and quilted cooling foam. These layers are quilted into the cover, which uses CryoFusion cooling nanofibres.
  • 1” ecoLuxe Gel Foam. The top layer of the mattress is a comfortable, responsive alternative to standard memory foam. It uses less carbon input than standard memory foam, with cooling properties to neutralize heat.
  • 1” Aeroduct Micro Coils. The first layer of coils is micro-coils. These smaller coils help with contouring, reducing strain on your joints and providing better relief from pressure points.
  • 1 ⅝” Elastex Foam. A transition layer separates the two coil layers. Elastex is a latex-alternative foam that retains its responsive and comfortable properties. This layer cushions the coils so you won’t feel them when you sink into the mattress. At the same time, it isolates motion and helps with spinal alignment.
  • 9” Pocket Coil Support Layer. Zoned pocket coils at the base of the mattress provide firm edge support, as well as better lumbar and hip support. The firmer coils through the centre of the mattress help with alignment, while the softer coils at your shoulders reduce pressure for side sleepers.

Logan & Cove Frontier Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.2/10

Hybrid mattresses provide breathability that you won’t find in all-foam mattresses. That’s one of the reasons that this mattress is great for those who sleep hot. The coils cycle cooler air through the mattress, allowing heat to vent properly. We saw this happen in real time during our testing. Temperatures would increase and then decrease again immediately because the mattress breathes so well.

Motion Isolation – 7.1/10

Like most hybrids, this mattress suffers when it comes to motion isolation. You’ll be able to feel a lot from the other side of the bed, including some smaller movements. Every round of tests returned underwhelming results. Though this mattress includes some light motion isolation, it doesn’t hold up for couples with restless partners.

Pressure Relief- 9.4/10

The plush Euro-top helps with pressure relief, making this mattress great for side sleepers. The layers cushion your body where it presses into the mattress, so you can sleep comfortably throughout the night. Most of our testers loved how this mattress felt even after extended use, and none of them had issues with pressure points.

Ease of Movement – 9.3/10

Despite its thicker comfort layers, the Logan & Cove Frontier makes it easy to move around. We measured a quick response time. When you move out of your body indents, they reform quickly so you don’t have to struggle to get to a new position.

Who is the Logan & Cove Frontier For?

  • Canadians who need lumbar support. The zoned coils at the core of the mattress help align your spine, reducing pressure and discomfort. This mattress is great for those with back pain.
  • Those who sleep hot. If you sleep hot, you will appreciate the breathability at the top of this mattress. Dual coil layers also introduce cooler air throughout the mattress.
  • Side sleepers who need pressure relief. The softer layers at the top of this mattress make it great for those who need pressure relief. The layer of micro-coils also helps contour the layers of your body. This is especially comfortable for side sleepers.

Who Should Avoid the Logan & Cove Frontier?

  • Those who don’t want to sink into the mattress. Canadians who like firmer mattresses sometimes don’t want to sink too far, which can be a problem with the Logan & Cove Frontier.

Highlights

  • Three firmness levels, with Firm being a true firm option
  • No weight limit, so even heavier sleepers can sleep comfortably
  • The breathable design makes for better temperature control than most foam-based mattresses

The Silk & Snow Organic is made with exclusively natural and organic foams, including layers of GOTS and GOLS-certified materials. It uses organic wool and Dunlop latex to create a comfortable sleeping surface, with breathable cotton and firm coils. While there are three different firmness levels you can choose from, the Firm version of the mattress represents one of the best firm constructions we’ve seen in a Canadian mattress.

Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Construction

  • GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton Cover. The cover is a comfortable organic cotton, breathable and soft for a better sleep experience overall.
  • GOTS-Certified Quilted Wool Layer. A layer of organic wool acts as a natural fire barrier, but it also wicks away heat and moisture to reduce overheating throughout the night.
  • GOLS-Certified Latex layer. A 0.8” layer of Dunlop latex creates a transition layer but also helps with pressure points and alignment.
  • Zoned Pocket Coil Base. The core of the mattress features extremely supportive zoned pocket coils, firmer through the centre of the mattress and softer near your shoulders.
  • Edge Support Perimeter. A perimeter of stronger coils helps bolster the edges of the mattress, preventing sinking and sagging when you sit on the edge.
  • Stabilizing Foam. A bottom layer of stabilizing foam helps the mattress keep its shape, reducing sagging at the coils over time.

Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Performance Scores

A side view of the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress
A side view of the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress

Temperature Control – 9.1/10

Coils and other breathable layers isolate heat, venting cooler air up through this mattress. The cover is also breathable enough to reduce temperatures. All but our hottest testers said they remained comfortable on this mattress throughout the night. We measured some heat build-up during our testing phases, but it dissipated at what we would consider a normal pace.

Motion Isolation – 7.2/10

Pocket coils make for poor motion isolation, especially when compared to all-foam mattresses. The coils allow more movement to make it to the other side of the bed. Testers felt a lot of motion during our practical tests, and our simulation tests returned consistently unfavourable results. If you aren’t worried about motion isolation, this won’t be a problem. However, if your partner is often restless or you are a light sleeper, you may want to choose a different mattress.

Pressure Relief-  8.9/10

Of course, this firm mattress doesn’t use a lot of thick comfort layers to keep you comfortable. It does a great job of supporting you and keeping you lifted out of the mattress, but you may notice some light pressure when you lay in the same spot for hours at a time. Most of our testers noticed a bit of pressure pushing back on them, but few of them developed uncomfortable pressure points. Heavier sleepers may have a harder time here.

Ease of Movement – 9.4/10

It’s easy to move around on the surface of the mattress. The latex is responsive and springs back into place quickly. The Firm version of the mattress doesn’t use as many thick layers, so you don’t sink as far into it. This means you can move around fairly easily and without any additional effort. Testers who move around a lot in their sleep didn’t notice any difficulty with movement when sleeping on the Firm version of this mattress.

Who is the Silk & Snow Organic For?

  • Those who want a truly firm mattress. While most of the firm mattresses we looked at are classified as ‘medium firm’, the firm version of this mattress is firm enough to satisfy those who need it.
  • Eco-conscious Canadians. All of the materials used within the Silk & Snow Organic are certified to be all-natural, organic, and safe for use.
  • Heavy sleepers. The Silk & Snow Organic mattress has no weight limit. Its materials are supportive for all sleepers, so you don’t have to worry about it not holding up for you.

Who Should Avoid the Silk & Snow Organic?

  • Canadians who want bounce. If you want more feedback from your mattress, the Silk & Snow Organic might not be the best choice for it. Its minimal levels of bounce may not be enough for those who like a mattress that responds to their movements.

Highlights

  • Affordable price for a high-quality mattress
  • Eco-conscious company with outstanding policies
  • Better edge support than expected for an all-foam mattress

The Douglas Original is a budget mattress, with a price point that makes sense for those who want the most for their money. This mattress is made with high-quality foams that reflect a commitment to the environment. It’s on the thinner side, but it performs extremely well in most of our testing categories. If you like a firm mattress, the Original is the best option in the Douglas lineup.

  • CoolSense Cover. The cover of the Douglas Original is made with Infinitex fibres, which are breathable and sustainable. This cover is breathable, but it can also be removed and washed when it’s time to refresh your mattress.
  • 2” ecoLight Cooling Gel Foam. The top layer of foam within the mattress is ecoLight cooling foam, which uses 40% less carbon than standard memory foam. This durable layer cushions pressure points, reduces heat, and remains responsive.
  • 2” Premium Elastex Foam. A transition layer of Elastex foam, a latex alternative, cushions your deepest pressure points. It is made without the chemicals found in many latex mattresses, so it should be better for those who may have allergic reactions to latex.
  • 6” Motion Isolation Support Foam. The base of the mattress is a supportive layer of motion isolation foam. This layer absorbs motion so it doesn’t wake you up, and you’ll feel very little from the other side of the bed as a result.

Douglas Original Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.3/10

While all-foam mattresses aren’t normally great at temperature control, this mattress is an exception. The cooling fibres within the breathable cover and the cooling gel foam work together to create a cooler sleeping experience. We saw a steady decline in higher temperatures throughout our testing, and our testers also reported a more comfortable experience than expected when it came to heat.

Motion Isolation – 9.8/10

As an all-foam mattress, we expected a great deal of motion isolation. However, this mattress offers more than we thought it would. There was hardly any measurable movement on the other side of the bed during our testing. Our testers didn’t report feeling anything, while we measured some light vibrations with our equipment. Either way, the mattress provides excellent motion isolation for couples with restless partners.

Pressure Relief – 9.3/10

The Douglas Original offers great pressure relief for a mattress that isn’t very thick. While heavier sleepers may need more pressure relief, this mattress is a solid option for most Canadians. While our heavier testers encountered some pressure, others didn’t note any specific pushback from the mattress. In most of our tests, this mattress received great scores in pressure relief.

Ease of Movement – 9.2/10

The layers of latex alternative and high-density memory foam alternative materials make it easy to move around on top of this mattress. You won’t sink too far in, meaning you won’t ever feel stuck in the mattress. While we measured some slower responses from the materials, you are less likely to feel trapped because it isn’t a pure memory foam mattress. The feedback from our testers confirmed this.

Who is the Douglas Original Mattress For?

  • Couples and cosleepers. Because the Douglas Original is an all-foam mattress, it isolates motion better than the hybrids on our list. If your partner is restless enough to keep you up at night, this mattress is a good choice.
  • Eco-conscious Canadians. If you want to avoid buying a mattress that contributes to harming the environment, this might be the right option for you. The materials are made with the planet in mind, reducing carbon input and chemicals used throughout.
  • Those who value the customer experience. Douglas offers some of the best company policies we’ve seen during our time with the Canadian sleep industry. It has a 365-night sleep trial, a 20-year warranty, and some of the best shipping and return policies you’ll find.

Who Should Avoid the Douglas Original Mattress?

  • Canadians who want a thicker mattress. At the end of the day, the Douglas Original is still a 10” mattress. It’s one of the best, but we understand that some users want a thicker mattress for a better comfort profile. Heavier sleepers may also benefit from a thicker mattress, especially if they find the Douglas Original too firm or uncomfortable.

Alternative Option

The Douglas Original performs great in most areas, but it lacks bounce. If you want more feedback from your mattress, consider a hybrid like the Silk & Snow Hybrid. With two firmness options to choose from and more bounce than your average bed-in-a-box mattress, this option will provide what you need.

Best Hybrid – Silk & Snow Hybrid

  • Ease of Movement: 9.4/10
  • Policies: 8.7/10

Highlights

  • Two firmness options, with the medium firm being the best firm choice
  • Zoned pocket coils for additional lumbar and hip support
  • Outstanding edge support and ease of movement

The Silk & Snow Hybrid is the best hybrid option for those who like a firmer mattress. This mattress offers two different firmness options, including a Medium-Firm and Plush version. The Medium-Firm version is the one we are concerned with, as it provides everything that you need from a firmer mattress. This option uses layers of foam and coils to provide support without sacrificing comfort.

Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress Construction

  • Antimicrobial Cover. While the cover of the Silk & Snow Hybrid isn’t removable, it has antimicrobial properties. This means that the mattress won’t grow bacteria, reducing odours so it remains fresh.
  • 1” Quilted Cooling Foam. The first layer of foam within the mattress is a quilted cooling foam. It promotes better breathability and pressure relief without
  • 2” High Density Gel Memory Foam. This high-density foam layer offers the deepest relief for pressure points. However, it also provides cooling by moving heat away from you.
  • 8” Zoned Pocket Coil Base. the base of the mattress uses up to 1200 pocket coils to provide zoned support for those who need it. These coils provide better support and alignment than standard coils.
  • Edge Support Perimeter. A perimeter of firmer coils prevents the edges of the mattress from collapsing when you sit or sleep there.

Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 8.9/10

The Silk & Snow Hybrid offers great temperature control if you only sleep warm. It doesn’t perform poorly here, but it’s not the coolest mattress on our list either. The cooling gel foam and breathable coils work to reduce heat, but not as quickly as some of the other options we’ve seen. Our equipment measured a steady decline in heat once it built up, but it was slower than we generally like to see.

Motion Isolation – 9.2/10

This mattress does a great job of isolating motion, especially considering that it is a hybrid. Coils tend to allow motion to travel much further, which can lead to vibration being felt throughout the mattress. Thankfully, this option doesn’t allow much of this. Couples with restless partners may not feel smaller movements, and some larger ones can be cancelled out. Our practical tests were consistent with this, and the simulation tests also detected less movement than we expected.

Pressure Relief- 8.6/10

The thinner comfort layers may make this mattress less than ideal for those who need strong pressure relief, particularly heavier sleepers. While it does a great job of relieving most pressure, the thinner layers can only do so much. The firmer coils below can sometimes feel uncomfortable, which was a sentiment we heard over and over again from our testers.

Ease of Movement – 9.4/10

However, the lack of pressure relief also means better ease of movement. Because you won’t sink too far into this mattress, it’s easy to move around and find new comfortable positions here. The materials respond quickly, rising to fill gaps and indents you leave when you move. Testers didn’t mention any resistance when moving around.

Sleeping on the Silk & Snow Hybrid
Sleeping on the Silk & Snow Hybrid

Who is the Silk & Snow Hybrid For?

  • Those who sleep warm. Though the cooling features in this mattress aren’t the best we’ve seen, it’s a good choice for those who sleep warm. The hottest sleepers should choose a mattress with better temperature control, though.
  • Canadians with restless partners. The Silk & Snow Hybrid has great motion isolation properties, especially considering that it is a hybrid mattress. If your partner is often restless, you may stay asleep longer with this mattress.
  • Users who need better lumbar support. If you need better support for your back, this mattress can help. The zoned coils are firm enough to keep you properly aligned throughout the night.

Who Should Avoid the Silk & Snow Hybrid?

  • Heavy side sleepers. Heavier side sleepers may sink too far into this mattress. The comfort layers are thin enough that you may feel the firmer coils, which can cause uncomfortable pressure points.

Highlights

  • Top-tier motion isolation, so couples can sleep soundly
  • More bounce than most of the other mattresses on our list
  • Great breathability, with less heat build-up throughout the night

The Simba 1500 mattress is Simba’s lower-tier option. This mattress is firmer than the others at Simba because it uses thinner comfort layers. In fact, one of the comfort layers at the top of the mattress is made with micro-coils, which provide great pressure relief but also add to the overall firmness of the mattress. However, this firmer option excels at temperature regulation, bounce, and motion isolation, rounding out a list of features that may help you sleep better.

Simba 1500 Mattress Construction

  • Breathable Sleep Surface. The hand-knitted cover of the Simba 1500 is hypoallergenic, so the mattress doesn’t develop odours over time.
  • Open-cell Graphite Infused SimbaTex. The top layer of the mattress is graphite-infused SimbaTex, an open-cell foam that provides much better breathability than standard memory foam. Graphite naturally isolates heat, so you won’t wake up too hot.
  • Aerocoil Spring-Comfort Layer. A layer of conical micro-springs helps contour your body, reducing strain and pressure. This layer also helps with giving you support right where you need it.
  • Simba-Pure Base. The base of the mattress is a layer of support foam, which uses EdgeLift to increase support around the edges of the mattress.

Simba 1500 Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.3/10

The Simba 1500 is a great option for those who need better cooling, mainly because of the temperature control used within the mattress. The layer of foam at the top of the mattress is infused with graphite, and the conical coils promote better breathability throughout. Our heat-mapping equipment noticed a spike in temperatures after laying on the mattress for an hour or so, but the materials worked to steadily replace it with heated air.

Motion Isolation – 10/10

Every part of this mattress helps isolate motion from the other side of the bed. The conical coils are the only part that may carry motion, but it is surrounded by dense foam that absorbs bigger movements. Our practical tests returned great results, and our simulation tests also showed minimal amounts of motion transfer when using this mattress.

Pressure Relief- 8.9/10

Because of the thinner comfort layers, this mattress may not be the best at removing pressure from your sleep environment. The coils in the middle help relieve some pressure, but the dense layer of foam at the bottom makes it almost impossible to escape. Heavier sleepers, especially, dealt with increased pressure no matter how they slept.

Ease of Movement – 8.4/10

The materials used inside this mattress don’t reform quickly. The coils don’t do much to push the foam layer at the top of the mattress back into place, which results in a mattress that can be difficult to move around on. Testers who move around a lot found themselves fighting with the mattress more often than they would like.

Who is the Simba 1500 For?

Testing the sinkage and pressure relief of the Simba 1500 Mattress
Testing the sinkage and pressure relief of the Simba 1500 Mattress
  • Couples. This mattress is slow to respond, but this means it’s better at isolating motion. You’ll feel almost nothing from the other side of the bed, even when your partner gets up or sits down.
  • Canadians who want more bounce. This mattress has a lot of bounce, which makes it ideal for those who want a little more feedback from their mattress when they move around or change positions.
  • Eco-conscious Canadians. The layers of foam and coils within the Simba 1500 are eco-conscious, with materials that are sustainable and better for the environment than standard mattress materials.

Who Should Avoid the Simba 1500?

  • Side and combination sleepers. While some side sleepers will be able to avoid the pressure relief problems within this mattress, most will have some pressure return. Combination sleepers, too, may have trouble moving around on top of the mattress.

  • 0.5” AirgoCell Foam. Point Elastic Airgocell foam absorbs body heat, dealing with the rest of the excess heat that may build up as you sleep. It also wicks away moisture to prevent bacteria and odours throughout the mattress.
  • 0.5” MemoryAdapt Foam. MemoryAdapt foam moulds to your body, producing a more even distribution for your weight. This means it’s easier to get comfortable without pressure points.
  • 0.75” HRX Foam. HRX Foam is incredibly supportive and durable, keeping you lifted out of the coil layers to reduce strain on your joints. No matter how you sleep, this layer also helps you move more freely.
  • 8” Pocket Coil Layer. The dense support layer offers edge-to-edge support. There are 7 ergonomic comfort zones that anticipate your needs based on where you sleep. These measures include firmer coils through the middle of the mattress, as well as extremely strong edge coils to reduce sagging.
  • 3.5” Support Foam. The bottom layer of dense foam protects the structure of the mattress and helps it last longer. This layer promotes better lift and support, keeping the coils from sagging after years of use.

Emma Hybrid Premium Plus Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.2/10

Within the Emma Hybrid Premium Plus, there are a few layers that isolate heat and keep you comfortable. When heat builds up, the cover and the first two layers of foam work to vent it off of you, wicking away moisture and preventing it from becoming overwhelming. While our hottest sleepers still noted that there was some temperature build-up at night, most said they hardly noticed any heat at all.

Motion Isolation – 10/10

Motion isolation is hard to find when it comes to firm hybrid mattresses. The Emma Hybrid Premium Plus has one of the best scores on our list, and we think that it’s due to the thick layer of stabilizing foam at the bottom of the mattress. No matter what tests we ran, both simulation and practical results came back with extremely impressive results. Restless partners, pets, and children will be hard-pressed to wake you up on this mattress.

Pressure Relief – 8.7/10

Pressure relief is one of the only areas in our testing procedure where this mattress performed at a less-than-stellar level. The comfort layers on top of the coils are thin, which may contribute to your mattress feeling uncomfortable if you sleep on your side. Heavy side sleepers may need to avoid this mattress, as they are more likely to feel the coils beneath the comfort layers.

Ease of Movement – 9.6/10

However, the thinner comfort layers also mean it’s easier to move around on this mattress. Since you don’t sink in, you won’t ever feel like you have to fight the mattress to get comfortable. Testers described being able to move around without any interference and without waking up in most cases. If you are a combination sleeper or need to turn over often to avoid pain, this mattress could be one of the best choices for you.

Who is the Emma Hybrid Premium Plus For?

  • Those who sleep light. If you are a light sleeper who wakes up at the smallest movement, you’ll love how the motion isolation in this mattress works. There will be no motion transferring from the other side of the mattress.
  • Canadians who move a lot. If you change position often when you sleep, this mattress can make it easier. It’s easy to move around on the surface, so you’ll never feel stuck.
  • Hot sleepers. The unique foams inside the Emma Hybrid Premium Plus make it a great choice for those who sleep hot at night.

Who Should Avoid the Emma Hybrid Premium Plus?

  • Heavier side sleepers. The pressure relief in this mattress isn’t as good as some of its other features, which may be less than ideal for heavier side sleepers.

Alternative Option

The Emma Hybrid Premium Plus only really lacks pressure relief. It doesn’t offer terrible pressure relief, but if you need more, consider the Logan & Cove Frontier. This mattress uses plush top layers, micro-coils, and a Euro-top section to provide better pressure relief for those who want to avoid pressure points.
