Best Organic Mattress in Canada

Traditional mattress manufacturing can be difficult to accept, especially when you consider the chemicals used to manufacture different types of foam. That’s why organic mattresses are so important. If you don’t like the idea of sleeping on a mattress made primarily of chemicals, you should choose one of the best organic mattresses in Canada. While they are often more expensive, they can help you sleep easier, reduce allergies, and help decrease your carbon footprint.

How We Test the Best Organic Mattresses in Canada

Pressure relief testing on our best organic mattresses

Scoring Our Organic Mattresses

The scores we assigned to our organic mattresses are aggregate scores that come from a variety of sources. We look at tester feedback, expert opinions, and our own testing results. These scores help us reach a score that we feel accurately portrays how the mattress feels, right down to how comfortable it can be for a variety of Canadians.

The Testing Process for Organic Mattresses

We test our organic mattresses using the same metrics as all of our other models. We put each mattress through its paces, with simulation tests that extend far beyond what normal use would entail. Then, we use our testers for practical testing and measure their responses in addition to the results from our equipment. This testing process allows us to achieve the most comprehensive picture of how each mattress performs.

How We Chose These Organic Mattresses

Usually, we choose mattresses solely based on performance. However, when choosing organic mattresses, we also had to consider the materials and construction of each mattress. Both of these factors weighed on us when we chose the options for our list. The mattresses that made it use organic materials, have some level of certification and perform better than others in the category.

  • Motion Isolation: 7.2/10
  • Edge Support: 9.0/10

  • Bounce: 7.8/10
  • Eco: 10/10
  • Response: 8.5/10
  • Ease of Movement: 9.4/10
  • Policies: 9/10

Highlights

  • Three firmness options at different price points
  • Organic construction, including wool and different types of natural latex
  • Responsive materials for better ease of movement

The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress is our favourite organic mattress on the Canadian market. This option features three different firmness options, so you can choose the one that works best for you. The materials used in all three versions of the mattress are ethically and transparently sourced, and you can easily track them to see where your mattress was made. This mattress isn’t too expensive but features some of the best high-quality materials in Canada.

Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Construction

  • GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton Cover. The cover of the Silk & Snow Organic mattress remains the same across all versions. It is made with organic cotton, which can help with breathability. It’s comfortable to the touch and helps provide a cooler sleeping experience because it also wicks away moisture to prevent night sweats.
  • GOTS-Certified Organic Wool Quilt Layer. The layer of quilted wool adds some additional temperature control, as wool naturally wicks away heat and moisture.
  • Plush and Medium Firm Only – 0.8” Quilted Latex Layer. Both of the softer versions of the Silk & Snow Organic use a layer of quilted latex for additional pressure relief. Whether you choose the Plush or Medium Firm version of this mattress, the quilted latex layer is the same size.
  • 0.8” GOLS-Certified Latex Layer. The main comfort layer within this mattress is natural Dunlop latex. It doesn’t use any chemicals like synthetic latex and helps isolate motion and reduce deep pressure. In the Medium Firm version, this layer is 1.5” thick. In the Plush version, it is 3.5” thick.
  • Pocket Coil Base with Zoned Support. The supportive core of the mattress uses up to 1,200 coils to provide a deeply supportive mattress. The coils are zoned, with firmer coils in the centre of the mattress and around the edges. This layer also aligns your spine to provide ergonomic support.
  • Edge Support Perimeter. The perimeter of the mattress offers bolstered edge support, so the mattress won’t flatten at the edge when you sit there.
  • Durable Base Foam. A layer of durable base foam maintains support and structure for the mattress, so the mattress doesn’t sag over years of use.

Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Performance Scores

A side view of the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress
A side view of the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress

Temperature Control – 9.1/10

The temperature control within the Silk & Snow Organic is better than expected considering it has no active temperature control features. The layer of wool helps wick away heat and moisture, but the mattress itself doesn’t hold onto a lot of heat at all. We noted some build-up within the mattress, but it was vented off quickly enough to reduce discomfort.

Motion Isolation – 7.2/10

No matter which version of the Silk & Snow Organic mattress you choose, you will have to deal with some measure of motion transfer. This mattress doesn’t perform well when it comes to motion isolation, making it less than ideal for those who need the mattress to stay still throughout the night. Both rounds of testing for motion isolation returned pretty poor results, so those who need isolation may need to choose a different mattress.

Pressure Relief- 8.9/10

Pressure relief increases as the mattress gets softer, as the softer versions of the mattress include thicker comfort layers. However, even the firm version of the mattress provides some measure of pressure relief, reducing deeper pressure points and keeping you elevated out of the coil layer. Our heavier testers noted that they were a bit uncomfortable with the pressure, but lightweight and average sleepers had no issues.

Ease of Movement – 9.4/10

The latex and wool used within the Silk & Snow Organic make it easy to move around on the surface. The materials respond quickly in the Firm version, and our testers mentioned that it remained easy to move around on the mattress across the different firmness options.

Who is the Silk & Snow Organic For?

  • Canadians on a budget. While the Plush version of the mattress is a little pricey, the other versions are much less expensive than other organic mattresses on the Canadian market.
  • Users with different firmness preferences. If you know that you prefer a soft mattress or need a firmer option, this is a great choice for you. You’ll get the same great benefits across all versions of the mattress, but one will undoubtedly be more comfortable for you.
  • Those who need better support. This mattress is extremely supportive, making it one of the best options for those who need additional back support.

Who Should Avoid the Silk & Snow Organic?

  • Users who need motion isolation. While the Plush version of the mattress does isolate some motion, it may not be enough for those who have restless partners.

The one area where the Silk & Snow Organic fails to impress is motion isolation. Couples with restless partners may need a mattress with better motion isolation, such as the Simba Green Hybrid Organic Mattress. This is also a hybrid, but it offers much better motion isolation throughout.

Highlights

  • Some of the best motion isolation we’ve found in an organic mattress
  • Proprietary materials combine for a unique feel
  • Three layers of coils, including dual mini-coil layers, provide great support.

The Simba Green Hybrid Organic Mattress is one of the best organic mattresses for couples in Canada. This mattress features 6,000 springs combined when you consider all three coil layers. Despite this, it isolates motion expertly. Those who sleep light and those who have restless partners can stay asleep longer on this mattress. Plus, it offers unparalleled support and comfort throughout its eco-conscious and organic layers.

Simba Green Hybrid Organic Mattress Construction

Layers inside the Simba Green Organic Mattress
  • Organic Cotton Cover. The cover of the Simba Green Hybrid Organic mattress is a breathable, soft material. This durable cover gives way to a mesh surround, which is made of 75% recycled water bottles to further reduce your environmental impact.
  • Natural Wool Layer. A layer of natural wool at the top of the mattress keeps you cool and comfortable throughout the night. This layer helps regulate the mattress throughout the seasons, so you won’t feel uncomfortable throughout the year.
  • SimbaTex Comfort Layer. A layer of SimbaTex, Simba’s proprietary memory foam, is near the top of the mattress. This layer is open-cell and infused with graphite, both traits that help with reducing higher temperatures. Simba uses this layer to drastically increase airflow throughout the mattress and increase temperature control.
  • 2 Aerocoil Spring-Comfort Layers. Conical Aerocoil minis springs make up the middle two layers of the mattress. These coils improve breathability and contour to your body, with better pressure relief. There are up to 5,000 coils in these two layers.
  • Talalay Natural Latex. Between the micro-coil layers and the pocket coil base is a layer of natural Talalay latex. It acts as a transition layer, balancing your body, cushioning you from the coil layer, and reducing pressure points.
  • 5 Zone SupportCore Pocket Coil Base. The Simba Green Hybrid Organic is built upon a base of sustainable, recyclable pocket coils. This mattress uses zoned coils for additional support, including support throughout the lumbar area. The coils are breathable and encased in a layer of supportive foam that increases durability at the edges.

Simba Green Hybrid Organic Mattress Performance Scores

A top view of the Simba Green Organic mattress

Temperature Control – 9.1/10

The Simba Green Hybrid Organic offers some cooling features that keep you comfortable, even if you usually experience night sweats. This mattress isolates heat and pushes cooler air up through the mattress thanks to the breathable SimbaTex layer. The multiple layers of coils also help remove heat from your sleeping environment. Our tests backed this up, and we found that there were few (if any) consistent instances of heat build-up within the mattress.

Motion Isolation – 10/10

The motion isolation in the Simba Green Hybrid Organic is the best we’ve seen in an organic mattress. This mattress doesn’t move at all, even when your partner gets out of bed. Both practical and simulation tests returned virtually no movement from the other side of the bed, with minimal vibrations if there were any readings at all.

Pressure Relief- 9.3/10

The comfort layers within this mattress help reduce pressure, keeping your joints from pressing too far into the mattress and developing pressure points. Even our heaviest testers didn’t have much to say about pressure. They noted that they felt some pressure, but not enough to make the mattress uncomfortable at all.

Ease of Movement – 8.7/10

The Simba Green Hybrid Organic responds a little slower than we like to see, though it still reforms quickly enough to be comfortable. It’s easier to move around on than mattresses that use traditional memory foam, but some users might have trouble. More testers than expected complained that it was difficult to move around, making it uncomfortable for those who needed to change positions often.

Who is the Simba Green Hybrid Organic For?

  • Couples and light sleepers. This mattress isolates motion well, making it ideal for those who wake up often when their partner tosses and turns.
  • Those who need pressure relief. This mattress provides great pressure relief, especially considering the contouring of the multiple coil layers.
  • Canadians who don’t move around at night. Some users may need to move around more at night to get comfortable. If you tend to stay relatively still, this mattress may be better for you.

Who Should Avoid the Simba Green Hybrid Organic?

  • Active sleepers. While this mattress does a great job in most categories, it can be restrictive for those who change positions often throughout the night.

Highlights

  • Two versions are available, including Standard and Pillow Top
  • Hypoallergenic foams to reduce allergic reactions for sensitive Canadians
  • Outstanding edge support to keep the edges from flattening

The Avocado Green is an organic latex mattress that offers great performance in nearly every category. You can choose between two different options, including the Standard version of the mattress and one that includes a pillow top. The Pillow Top version is 5” taller and includes an additional comfort layer to keep the mattress plush and comfortable. Inside, you’ll find layers of comfortable materials that are the very best they can be, with exciting performance across most of our tests.

Avocado Green Mattress Construction

  • 5” Pillow-Top Section (Pillow Top Version Only). The top of the Pillow Top version of the mattress uses a thick, plush Euro-top. The 5” layer of Dunlop latex adds pressure relief and additional comfort.
  • 100% Organic Cotton Ticking. The mattress is wrapped in a layer of cotton ticking to reduce dust, remove allergens, and keep your bed fresh and clean.
  • 100% Organic Wool. A layer of dense organic wool helps with pressure relief and some temperature control. It reduces strain and prevents the mattress from using additional fire-resistant chemicals.
  • 100% Organic Certified Dunlop Latex. Dunlop latex is responsive and cool, with the ability to help your spine align perfectly for peak comfort. It also helps isolate motion, so your partner’s movements won’t wake you up throughout the night.
  • Pocketed Innerspring Unit. The mattress’s core features a pocket coil support layer that uses up to 1,414 pocket coils at the largest size. These coils are separated into 4 ergonomic zones, with an edge support perimeter to reduce sagging at the edges of the mattress. These pocket coils align your spine and provide top-notch support.
  • 100% Organic Certified Dunlop Latex. A thin layer of Dunlop latex supports the coils, keeping them from sagging and maintaining the structure of the mattress throughout its lifespan.

Avocado Green Mattress Performance Scores

Testing pressure relief and feel of the Avocado Green mattress
Testing pressure relief and feel of the Avocado Green mattress

Temperature Control – 9/10

Latex doesn’t allow heat to build up like memory foam, which means that this mattress is naturally better at keeping you cool than a memory foam mattress would be. If you regularly sleep hot, this mattress may be able to help a bit. Heat mapping showed relatively little build-up, but the lack of active cooling features meant that it hung around for longer. If you sleep extremely hot, this might not be the right mattress for you.

Motion Isolation – 9.1/10

The latex within this mattress does a good job of isolating motion, reducing most vibrations from the other side of the bed. You’ll find that this mattress doesn’t allow you to feel much, though larger movements like getting out of bed or tossing and turning may result in some disturbances. Still, all of our testing showed promising results when it comes to motion isolation.

Pressure Relief- 8.5/10

One area where the Avocado Green could improve is pressure relief. The latex layers will keep you from sinking too far into the mattress, but they don’t contour enough for this to relieve pressure. As a result, this mattress may not be suitable for heavier Canadians or those who are seeking a lot of pressure relief. Most will be fine, but some users need more pressure relief than others.

Ease of Movement – 9.4/10

Layers of organic latex respond quickly to movement, reducing the ‘stuck’ feeling that you might expect with memory foam. If you need to change positions often at night, this mattress makes it easy. We received no complaints about the mattress feeling like quicksand, so most Canadians will feel free to move around even after sleeping in the same position for hours.

Who is the Avocado Green For?

  • Canadians who sleep hot. Comfortable, cooling foams reduce temperatures throughout the mattress. If you sleep hot, this mattress may be able to help you beat the heat.
  • Those who move around a lot at night. If you are an active sleeper and move around a lot during the night, you’ll find it easy to get into position with the Avocado Green.
  • Edge sleepers. The Avocado Green offers strong edge support, which helps reduce sagging and flattening at the edges. You’ll get the same support throughout the mattress.

Who Should Avoid the Avocado Green?

  • Heavier Canadians. The thinner comfort layers within the mattress make it less than ideal for heavier Canadians who need better pressure relief.

Best Proprietary Foams – Essentia Stratami

  • Bounce: 8/10
  • Eco: 10/10

  • Ease of Movement: 9/10
  • Policies: 9/10

Highlights

  • Unique dome-shaped latex provides additional airflow and support
  • Fully certified and organic construction
  • Outstanding temperature control due to limited heat build-up

The Essentia Stratami comes with a few different options. In addition to choosing your size, you can also choose the height of your mattress. The construction of each mattress height is virtually the same, though the comfort layers within the thicker mattress might be a bit more substantial. You can also choose to add EMF protection foam, which Essentia says helps you sleep better. This mattress also uses a unique dome-shaped latex for increased support and breathability, so you can expect a unique sleep experience all around.

Essentia Stratami Mattress Construction

  • GOTS Certified Organic Cotton Cover. The cover of the Essentia Stratami is made with organic cotton. It’s removable and washable, with a breathable design that helps reduce heat at the surface of the mattress.
  • Nontoxic Flame Barrier. While other organic mattresses use wool as a natural flame barrier, the Essentia Stratami uses a layer of kevlar fabric. It’s an allergy-free option that works to stop fires, which can also reduce the chemicals used throughout the rest of the mattress.
  • GOLS Certified Organic Latex Support. A middle layer of organic latex helps with pressure relief, aligning your spine and keeping your back well-supported throughout the night. If you usually wake with aches and pains, this mattress may be able to help.
  • Dome-Shaped Organic Latex Foam. Essentia uses a proprietary dome-shaped organic latex for support. This layer helps promote additional airflow, eliminating pressure points and adding the breathability that most foam mattresses need.

Essentia Stratami Mattress Performance Scores

Testing the pressure relief and contouring of the Essentia Stratami
Testing the pressure relief and contouring of the Essentia Stratami

Temperature Control – 9.5/10

Latex doesn’t retain heat like memory foam or other materials might. As a result, you’ll get hardly any heat build-up within this mattress. A little heat will gather around your body, but for the most part, it dissipates quickly and doesn’t leave you feeling too hot. Heat mapping showed a quick resolution for any heat that appeared.

Motion Isolation – 9.2/10

Because latex stops most motion from transferring to the other side of the bed, this mattress offers great motion isolation. Of course, the comfort layers may be too thin to stop most larger movements from transferring. However, the other layers are hard at work to make sure you barely feel anything from the other side of the mattress. Our testers and ball drop test results showed that vibration could be felt with larger movements, but it quickly dropped off.

Pressure Relief – 8.6/10

The Stratami is a thinner mattress, even if you choose the larger size. The comfort layers may not be thick enough for some Canadians to get comfortable. This is what we saw when we took tester feedback; heavier sleepers found that the mattress had a little too much pressure, and some average sleepers noticed it as well.

Ease of Movement – 9/10

The latex materials throughout the mattress are extremely responsive, leading to a more comfortable sleep for those who need to move often. The surface of the mattress reforms quickly to reduce the ‘stuck’ feeling you might expect. Though some users found it a little harder to move around than others, most had an easy time getting comfortable even after laying in the same position for hours.

Who is the Essentia Stratami For?

  • Canadians who sleep hot. Multiple latex layers, including the channeled dome-shaped latex within the core of the mattress, keep you cooler than memory foam might.
  • Eco-conscious Canadians. All parts of this mattress are completely organic and sustainable.
  • Those with wool allergies. While most other organic mattresses choose a wool top layer, this mattress uses Kevlar. It is hypoallergenic, so those with allergies can rest a little easier.

Who Should Avoid the Essentia Stratami?

  • Edge sleepers. If you sit on the edge of the bed in the morning or tend to sleep near it, you may want to choose a mattress with better edge support.

Because of the construction of the Essentia Stratami, it doesn’t offer the best edge support. If you need a mattress that keeps you properly supported from one edge to the other, you should consider the Hamuq Organic Hybrid. It’s a taller hybrid mattress that offers great pressure relief and outstanding edge support.

Best Support – Hamuq Organic Hybrid

The Hamuq Organic Hybrid Mattress before we started testing
  • Temperature Control: 8.9/10
  • Motion Isolation: 8.2/10
  • Edge Support: 9.5/10
  • Pressure Relief: 9.8/10
  • Bounce: 9.1/10
  • Eco: 10/10

  • Ease of Movement: 9/10
  • Policies: 8/10

Highlights

  • Two coil layers for pressure relief and better support
  • Firm edge support for those who sleep near the edge of the bed
  • Responsive materials reduce the feeling of being ‘stuck’ in the mattress

The Hamuq Organic Hybrid Mattress is one of the most supportive options on our list. Instead of buffering the two coil layers with a layer of transition foam, Hamuq puts them right on top of each other. The result is a mattress that feels as supportive as you need without going overboard. Aside from support, there are a few areas where this mattress does a great job of keeping Canadians comfortable throughout the night.

Hamuq Organic Hybrid Mattress Construction

Getting a better look at the layers of latex inside of the Hamuq Organic Hybrid
  • 0.5” 100% Organic Cotton Cover. The cover of the Hamuq Organic Hybrid is certified organic cotton, which is extremely soft and breathable.
  • 1” 100% Wool Quilt Layer. The first layer within the mattress is quilted wool, which wicks away heat and moisture naturally. Wool also acts as a fire retardant, so the rest of the mattress doesn’t have to use harsh chemicals.
  • 2.5” 100% Organic Latex Layer. The next layer is 2.5” of durable Dunlop latex. It uses no chemicals and is 100% natural and organic.
  • 1” Micro-coil Layer. A layer of contouring micro-coils adds pressure relief and alignment, separating you from the firmer pocket coils at the base of the mattress.
  • 8” Zoned Pocket Coil Base. The base of the mattress features softer coils on the outer thirds, with firmer coils in the middle. This ensures that the mattress delivers adequate lumbar support for all who need it. It also helps with better alignment and balancing, so you don’t wake up uncomfortable.
  • Firm Edge Support. The edges of the mattress are reinforced with extra firm perimeter coils, which help keep the mattress from sagging or flattening under your weight when you sit on the edge.

Hamuq Organic Hybrid Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 8.9/10

Latex offers the comfort of memory foam without the associated quicksand feeling. This leads to better temperature control, too – heat doesn’t get an opportunity to build up in the mattress, so you won’t feel too hot throughout the night. While the latex in this mattress does a good job of keeping heat away, heat that does build up isn’t dealt with quickly enough to avoid some discomfort.

Motion Isolation – 8.2/10

The coil layers within the Hamuq make it difficult for motion to stop. Though the coils are individually pocketed, they are still subject to larger movements from the other side of the bed. While the Hamuq doesn’t perform too terribly here, it’s still worse than some of the other mattresses we’ve looked at. All simulation tests and practical testing sessions returned middling results, which means that some Canadians will not be able to sleep well if their partner is tossing and turning.

Pressure Relief – 9.8/10

Despite its issues with motion isolation, this mattress offers great pressure relief. The wool and latex contour to your body to provide better relief from pressure points. The top layer of micro-coils also contours better, providing support without the pushback that can cause uncomfortable pressure points. Our testers found great support here, but no one complained about pressure as a result.

Ease of Movement – 9/10

The latex within the Hamuq Organic Hybrid is extremely responsive, moving back into position quickly after you move away. As a result, you can move around easier on top of the mattress. Our testers didn’t mention any instances where they felt stuck in the mattress, though they sometimes had to try a little harder to move out of areas where they’d been sleeping for a long time.

Who is the Hamuq Organic Hybrid For?

  • Heavier Canadians. Heavier Canadians, particularly heavy side sleepers, need more pressure relief. This mattress delivers deep pressure relief for most Canadians.
  • Users who need strong support. If you need strong lumbar and full-body support, the multiple coil layers of the Hamuq Organic Hybrid will work well for you.
  • Active Canadians. If you move around a lot in your sleep or need to get comfortable often, you need a mattress that makes it easy to move around. The Hamuq Organic Hybrid offers better ease of movement thanks to the layers of latex within the mattress.

Who Should Avoid the Hamuq Organic Hybrid?

  • Canadians who need better motion isolation. If you often wake up at the slightest movement from the other side of the bed, you should consider an option that has better motion isolation.
