Douglas Original Mattress Construction

  • Douglas CoolSense Cover. The cover of the Douglas Original is completely removable and machine-washable. It is made with eco-conscious Infinitex fibres that wick away moisture and reduce higher temperatures.
  • 2” Luxury ecoLight Cooling Gel Foam. The first layer of foam within the Douglas Original is ecoLight, a plush foam that is made with less carbon input than standard memory foam. It acts as a high-density foam that relieves pressure and stays responsive throughout the night.
  • 2” Premium Elastex Foam. A transitional layer of Elastex foam, a latex alternative, maintains responsiveness and makes it easier to move around on the mattress. This layer cushions pressure points so you don’t bottom out.
  • 6” Motion Isolation Support Foam. A core of dense motion isolation support foam balances your body and reduces motion transfer to keep you asleep.

Douglas Original Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.3/10

In our tests, we noted that the Douglas Original was slow to heat up under our testers, and heat dissipated quickly when they moved away. The cooling cover and layer of cooling gel foam can help reduce heat significantly for those who sleep hot, based on our experience with the mattress.

Motion Isolation – 9.8/10

As an all-foam mattress, the Douglas Original is naturally great at motion isolation. However, we didn’t expect it to be as effective as it is. This mattress offers near-total motion isolation. Testers couldn’t feel much of anything from the other side of the bed, and even our lightest sleepers never woke up with increased motion.

Pressure Relief – 9.3/10

Douglas Original does a great job of relieving pressure, too. Multiple layers of eco-conscious foams keep pressure points at bay. Some of our testers noted that this mattress was one of the best King mattresses in Canada they’d tried, even among the other options we’d sent to them. While heavier sleepers may feel some pushback, most slept comfortably.

Ease of Movement – 9.2/10

The Elastex foam in the centre of the mattress helps make it easy to move around on top of the Douglas Original. This is essential, as you don’t want to feel “stuck” in a memory foam mattress. Here, you can move around freely. The materials may take a little longer to reform when you move away, but they won’t pull you in.

Who is the Douglas Original For?

  • Couples with restless partners. Douglas Original does a great job of isolating motion, so your partner’s tossing and turning won’t wake you up.
  • Side and back sleepers. This mattress sleeps great for side and back sleepers. Pressure relief and sinkage that maintains support keep you comfortable throughout the night.
  • Those who sleep hot. Cooling features reduce higher temperatures at the surface of the mattress, so those who sleep hot won’t overheat during the night.

Who Should Avoid the Douglas Original?

  • Canadians who need a little bounce. If you want a little more feedback from your mattress, you might want to avoid the Douglas Original. While it performs admirably in most areas, it doesn’t offer a lot of bounce or feedback when you move around.

  • Eco-conscious foam layers put your mind at ease
  • Great testing scores across most of our testing categories, including cooling and edge support

“Neither of us likes a deep contour, but the Logan & Cove Pinnacle was perfect at giving us support and pressure relief without sinking too far into the mattress. We love the way it feels.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Logan & Cove Pinnacle)

Logan & Cove Pinnacle Mattress Construction

  • 1.5” Quilted Euro-Top Cover. A thick, plush Euro-top section at the top of the mattress maintains plushness and pressure relief. The cover itself uses CryoFusion cooling nanofibres, while cooling gel and hollow-fibre fill below reduce heat build-up.
  • 1” ecoLuxe Cooling Gel Foam. The first proper layer within the mattress is ecoLuxe cooling foam, a gel-infused layer that reduces heat by filtering it away from you. This layer contours to your body, helping the coils below with perfect support.
  • 1” Aeroduct Micro Coils. The first layer of Aeroduct micro coils provides outstanding localized support and contouring. They cradle your body, responding to your specific sleep needs.
  • 1” Premium Elastex Foam. A layer of latex-alternative Elastex foam cushions the two coil layers, cushioning deeper pressure points and allowing you to feel comfortable without bottoming out.
  • 1” Aeroduct Micro Coils. A second layer of Aeroduct micro coils provides an additional cooling channel, better support, and more loft than the first.
  • 9” Pocket Coils with Reinforced Edge Support. The bulk of the mattress is made of a pocket coil base that balances your body, maintaining support and comfort from head to toe. The centre of the mattress features firmer coils to properly support your hips and lower back.

Testing the sinkage on the Logan & Cove Pinnacle

Logan & Cove Pinnacle Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.2/10

The coil layers within the Logan & Cove Pinnacle help create better airflow throughout the mattress. We noted that heat built up quickly, but was dispersed just as quickly by the introduction of cooler air from the bottom of the mattress. The cooling gel foam at the top also created an immediate cooling effect that helped our testers who usually overheat sleep more comfortably.

Motion Isolation – 6.4/10

If there’s one area where the Logan & Cove Pinnacle didn’t perform as well, it’s motion isolation. The coil layers were great in other aspects, but here they allowed too much motion to transfer across the mattress. Vibration testing and our practical feedback agreed that this mattress wasn’t great at reducing motion transfer.

Pressure Relief – 9.1/10

On the other hand, those same coil layers helped the Pinnacle achieve better pressure relief. Because the coils lift your body out of the core of the mattress, our heaviest sleepers didn’t bottom out or feel any discomfort from the firmer support layers. The result was a mattress that relieved pressure well, especially for those who wanted to be on the mattress, not in it.

Ease of Movement – 9.0/10

Logan & Cove is made with a host of comfortable materials, but even the Euro-top section didn’t hamper movement too much. It was fairly easy to move around on the surface of the mattress, even when we’d been in the same position for a long time.

Who is the Logan & Cove Pinnacle For?

  • Those who sleep warm. The Pinnacle uses a combination of cooling foams and breathable coils to cycle cooler air through the mattress, making it ideal for those who sleep warmer.
  • Canadians with back pain. The contouring from the multiple layers of coils may be ideal for those who suffer with back pain, as the coils can help keep you balanced and your spine neutral.
  • Heavier body types. Heavier Canadians will find that they sink into this mattress without bottoming out. Thankfully, the coil layers add loft to keep you above the denser layers at the core of the mattress.

Who Should Avoid the Logan & Cove Pinnacle?

  • Couples. While the Logan & Cove Pinnacle could provide custom support for couples, its main drawback is the lack of motion isolation. If you usually wake up when your partner tosses and turns, this might not be the right mattress for you.

Alternative Option

If you need a mattress that isolates motion before it makes it to the other side of the bed, the Logan & Cove Pinnacle may not be the best choice. In fact, the hybrids on this list don’t provide great performance when it comes to motion isolation. We suggest the Endy mattress, an all-foam option, as it provides some of the best motion isolation technology on the Canadian market.

“We were happy to see that Silk & Snow started offering their Organic mattress in different firmness options. We love the softer Plush version of this mattress.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Silk & Snow Organic)

Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Construction

Firm Version

  • GOTS Certified Organic Cotton Cover. The cover is made with GOTS-certified organic cotton. It’s extremely soft and works great with any sheet set, including silk sheets.
  • GOTS Certified Organic Wool Quilt Layer. A layer of organic wool at the top of the mattress keeps it chemical-free, as wool works as a natural fire retardant and adds some temperature regulation properties.
  • 0.8” GOLS Certified Latex Layer. A thin layer of organic Dunlop latex helps provide additional pressure relief and keep you elevated out of the coil layers at the base of the mattress.
  • Zoned Pocket Coil Base. Dense pocket coils create a supportive core with breathable coils. These coils are firmer through the middle of the mattress to provide better support for your hips and back.
  • Firm Edge Support. A perimeter of firmer coils around the edge of the mattress prevents sinking and sagging there.

Medium Firm Version

  • GOTS Certified Organic Cotton Cover. Same as Firm version.
  • GOTS Certified Organic Wool Quilt Layer. Same as Firm version.
  • 0.8” GOLS Certified Quilted Latex. This layer of quilted wool provides additional breathability and softness for the top fo the mattress.
  • 1.5” GOLS Certified Latex. In the Medium-Firm version of the mattress, the certified latex layer is dense and comfortable. At 1.5” high, this layer reduces pressure even better than the Firm version.
  • Zoned Pocket Coil Base. Same as Firm version.
  • Firm Edge Support. Same as Firm version.

We used the Medium Firm version of the Silk & Snow Organic mattress during our testing periods.

Plush Version

  • GOTS Certified Organic Cotton Cover. Same as Firm version.
  • GOTS Certified Organic Wool Quilt Layer. Same as Firm version.
  • 0.8” GOLS Certified Latex. Same as Medium-Firm version.
  • 3.5” GOLS Certified Latex Layer. In the Plush version of the Silk & Snow Organic, this essential latex layer is thicker than in both other versions combined. This allows for the deepest pressure point relief, balancing, and comfort.
  • Zoned Pocket Coil Base. Same as Firm version.
  • Firm Edge Support. Same as Firm version.

Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.1/10

The Silk & Snow Organic uses a combination of breathable coils and a cotton cover to keep you cool and wick away moisture. Latex also doesn’t retain heat like memory foam does, so it has an advantage for cooling straight from the materials. Most of our testers said they were comfortable on the mattress and didn’t overheat, but those who sleep extremely hot may still have issues.

Motion Isolation – 7.2/10

The coils create a lot of motion in the Silk & Snow Organic. The Plush version may be a little better at isolating motion because of the thicker comfort layers, but the other versions of the mattress still had significant motion transfer through all our testing phases.

Pressure Relief – 8.9/10

Pressure relief in the Medium-Firm version of the mattress is fine for most. Side sleepers had no problem with this mattress, but the Plush version might be preferable for heavier side sleepers. If you need additional pressure relief, the Plush version might be best for you.

Ease of Movement – 9.4/10

The latex within the mattress make it easier to move around in the middle of the night. Latex is more responsive than memory foam, creating a better sleeping space for those who need to change position often to stay comfortable.

Who is the Silk & Snow Organic For?

  • Those who sleep warm. If you often overheat, this mattress may be able to help. Though it doesn’t use active cooling features, the latex materials are less likely to retain heat than standard memory foam. This means heat doesn’t build up, and you sleep more comfortably.
  • Combination sleepers. Combination sleepers often need to move around to get comfortable in the middle of the night, and may change positions often. The Silk & Snow Organic makes it easy to move around and find the perfect comfortable position.
  • Canadians who know their sleep preferences. If you know which firmness works for you, the Silk & Snow Organic is a great option. You can choose the firmness level you prefer at checkout.

Who Should Avoid the Silk & Snow Organic?

  • Restless couples. The Silk & Snow Organic doesn’t have the best motion isolation in the world because of its supportive coils. As a result, couples and those dealing with restless partners should try a mattress that isolates motion a bit better.

Best All Foam – Octave Horizon

Best All Foam
The Octave Horizon is a great all-foam mattress for the price. Its excellent pressure relief and response make it an ideal King mattress in Canada.
  • Temperature Control: 9.4/10
  • Motion Isolation: 8.5/10
  • Edge Support: 8.9/10
  • Pressure Relief: 9.8/10

  • Ease of Movement: 9.5/10

Highlights

  • Responsive materials ensure that you never feel stuck in the mattress
  • Near-perfect pressure relief and ideal sinkage for side sleepers
  • Thick comfort layers add additional plushness you won’t find in other all-foam options

“We took a chance on the Octave Horizon. We can’t believe how much better we sleep.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Octave Horizon)

Octave Horizon Mattress Construction

  • CryoFusion Cooling Nanofibre Cover. The cover of the Octave Horizon uses CryoFusion Cooling Nanofibres to disperse heat across the surface of the mattress. The Horizon has more of these fibres than any other Octave mattress.
  • 2.5” CopperGel Memory Foam + PolarMAX. The top layer of foam is CopperGel Memory Foam, with a coating of PolarMAX phase-changing material. Copper is naturally antimicrobial, but also helps to conduct heat away from you. The phase-changing materials help the mattress maintain consistently cool temperatures throughout the night.
  • 1.5” Aerated Latex Foam. A layer of aerated latex foam maintains support and responsiveness. This layer has perforations to help with airflow throughout the mattress.
  • 2” ecoLuxe Cooling Gel Foam. A third comfort layer is made with ecoLuxe, a cooling foam that is infused with gel to further reduce heat. This mattress also provides great cushioning and relieves pressure points throughout.
  • 2” Premium Elastex Foam. A final transitional layer of latex-alternative foam (Elastex) helps cushion deep pressure points, isolate motion, and keep you perfectly balanced for meaningful sleep.
  • 6” Multi-Zone Support Foam with Air Channels. The supportive foam core is made with dense foam and uses air channels for improved breathability. This layer keeps your spine aligned to reduce aches and improve sleep outcomes.

Feeling the pressure relief from the Octave Horizon

Octave Horizon Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.4/10

The Octave Horizon uses multiple layers of cooling materials, including phase-changing materials, to affect how much heat can gather as you sleep. Phase-changing materials mean the mattress heats slowly, and the cooling materials dissipate it quickly to reduce discomfort.

Motion Isolation – 8.5/10

The Octave Horizon does a good job of keeping motion transfer to a minimum, but some couples may need a mattress that performs better here. We had minimal motion transfer during our testing, but we could still feel some movement from the other side of the bed.

Pressure Relief – 9.8/10

The Octave Horizon received an almost perfect pressure relief score from us. The layers of foam within the mattress work together to cushion all of your pressure points, so you don’t wake up uncomfortable or achy. Pressure relief was an outstanding feature of this mattress throughout all of our testing phases.

Ease of Movement – 9.5/10

Sometimes, it can be hard to move around on memory foam mattresses. Thankfully, the construction of the Octave Horizon (and the materials it uses) creates a surface that doesn’t hold you down. You won’t feel stuck in this mattress while you’re trying to get comfortable.

Who is the Octave Horizon For?

  • Side Sleepers. The Octave Horizon is great at relieving pressure, which is essential for side sleepers to have a more comfortable rest.
  • Those who sleep hot. If you need a mattress that reduces heat throughout, the Octave Horizon works perfectly. It’s one of the best King mattresses in Canada that is made with foams and offers effective cooling.
  • Combination sleepers. Combination sleepers need comfort in every sleeping position, as well as a responsive mattress that allows them to move around without feeling stuck. The Octave Horizon meets all of these needs.

Who Should Avoid the Octave Horizon?

  • Stomach sleepers. While the Octave Horizon has great performance in a lot of our categories, it lacks the stronger support that stomach sleepers need from their mattresses.

Best for Couples – Endy Mattress

Endy logo on the Endy mattress
Endy logo on the Endy mattress
Best for Couples
Endy has some of the best motion isolation on the Canadian market, making it perfect for those couples and those with restless partners.
  • Temperature Control: 9.3/10
  • Motion Isolation: 9.6/10
  • Edge Support: 9.7/10
  • Pressure Relief: 8.1/10
  • Bounce: 9.9/10
  • Eco: 8/10
  • Response: 10/10
  • Ease of Movement: 10/10
  • Policies: 8/10

Highlights

  • Great response and ease of movement for an all-foam mattress.
  • Three firmness options to choose from
  • Outperforms the competition when it comes to edge support, motion isolation, and bounce.

“The Endy mattress was more than just a replacement for our old mattress. Even when it was new, we never slept as well on that mattress as we do on the Endy.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Endy Mattress)

Endy Mattress Construction

  • Micro Quilted Cover. A soft, smooth cover makes the top of the mattress more inviting. This stretchable cover is fully machine washable and easy to remove when it’s time to refresh the sheets.
  • Endy Comfort Foam. The top layer of the mattress features responsive Endy comfort foam, an open-cell foam that is infused with cooling gel for cooler sleep throughout the night.
  • Transition Foam. Transition foam keeps you lifted out of the firm support core, reducing discomfort and maintaining balance. This layer is also responsible for most of the motion isolation from this mattress.
  • Support Foam. The dense support foam at the core of the mattress balances your body and provides ideal support no matter how you sleep.

Note that the Endy Mattress is available in three firmness levels: Firm, Medium-Firm, and Plush. These firmness options use the same general construction, but they change the thickness of each material to change the feel of the mattress. Because this is the case, we are only looking at the general construction of all Endy mattress options. Our performance metrics came from testing done on the Medium-Firm version of the mattress.

Inside the Endy mattress layers
Inside the Endy mattress layers

Endy Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.3/10

Endy is a breathable mattress that uses few active cooling materials. Still, the mattress does a great job at mitigating heat, mostly due to its open-cell foam design. Our testing returned strong cooling results when heat built up, so even the hottest sleepers can stay comfortable.

Motion Isolation – 9.6/10

The Endy mattress has some of the best motion isolation on the Canadian mattress market. Its combination of open-cell foams and motion-isolating materials keep transfer to a minimum, so you can stay peacefully asleep even when your partner is having a rough night.

Pressure Relief – 8.1/10

Due to the thinner comfort layer composition of the Endy mattress, it doesn’t relieve pressure as well as some of the other all-foam mattresses we’ve reviewed. Heavier testers mentioned that they felt uncomfortable after a few hours sleeping on the Endy mattress, because they felt like they were sinking through the comfort layers to the firmer support materials below.

Ease of Movement – 10/10

It’s extremely easy to move around on the Endy mattress. The layers work together to keep you on top of the mattress rather than in it for the most part. The result is a better balance and an easier time turning over or getting comfortable than other options in its price point.

Who is the Endy For?

  • Couples. Couples will love how still this mattress is. Restless partners won’t wake you up, no matter how much they toss and turn.
  • Combination Sleepers. Combination sleepers often cycle through different sleeping positions to get comfortable. They need ease of movement to get comfortable, and the Endy provides this better than most all-foam mattresses on our list.
  • Edge sleepers. Strong edge support scores from our testing phases mean that this mattress keeps the edges firm, even when you sit on the side of the bed. This helps reduce sagging and sliding that usually occurs in foam mattresses.

Who Should Avoid the Endy?

  • Heavier sleepers. The Firm and Medium versions of the Endy Mattress aren’t great at relieving pressure, so you may need to choose the Plush version (or another mattress entirely) if you are worried about this.
