Our Scoring Process for Affordable Mattresses

Scoring our affordable mattresses is no easy feat, but we have a few different sources we look at for information. First, we consult with our experts to determine which mattresses work best in certain areas. We also consider our tester feedback, as it is important to get the opinions of people who have used each mattress for longer periods. Finally, we consider our testing results from our phases of evaluations. Together, these scores are aggregated into a composite score that takes all experiences with a mattress into account.

Testing Affordable Mattresses

It’s no surprise that we go into our mattress testing phases with some expectations. We expect some mattresses to perform better than others based on the materials used in their construction. When testing, we submit all mattresses to the same rounds of testing, including practical tests with our testing staff and simulation tests with our equipment. These comprehensive testing methods allow us to get a clear picture of how the mattress may work for the widest range of Canadians possible.

How We Chose These Affordable Mattresses

To keep these mattresses friendly for a range of budgets, we kept our search within a certain price range for queen-sized models. Within these results, we looked at options that performed best across a range of categories and isolated them from the rest of the results. These isolated mattresses became our best affordable mattresses in Canada. They seamlessly blend affordability and quality.

  • Bounce: 6.0/10

  • Some of the best mattress company policies on the market, with a long trial and great warranty

Douglas’s original mattress has won awards for its construction, performance, and affordability. This mattress won’t break the bank but still delivers some of the best performance on the Canadian mattress market. It’s a great choice for side sleepers, those who sleep hot and those who need additional pressure relief.

  1. CoolSense Cover. The removable, washable cover is made using Infinitex fibres. This cover is breathable and cool. Plus, it washes without any special cleaning instructions and goes back on without any hassle.
  2. 2” ecoLight Cooling Gel Foam. The top layer is made with ecoLight, which is a high-density memory foam alternative. It is made with 40% less carbon input than standard memory foam but remains durable and responsive. It also helps eliminate the quicksand feeling usually associated with memory foam.
  3. 2” Premium Elastex Foam. A middle layer of Elastex foam is a latex alternative that is made without chemicals usually found in latex. This layer is responsive and dampens motion, reducing transfer so you can sleep more comfortably. Latex also doesn’t allow heat to build up, so the mattress sleepers cooler as a result.
  4. 6” Motion Isolation Support Foam. The core of the mattress features a slab of motion isolation support foam, which aligns your spine and keeps motion from transferring from one side of the bed to the other.

Douglas Original Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.3/10

Along with a breathable cover, the cooling foam at the top of the mattress helps the Douglas Original stay cool. It doesn’t allow heat to build up like traditional memory foam, so you can sleep a little more comfortably if you usually suffer from night sweats. Our heat mapping showed less heat build-up than we usually see, and the mattress dealt with it quickly and effectively.

Motion Isolation – 9.8/10

As an all-foam mattress, the Douglas Original naturally has better motion isolation than hybrid mattresses might. However, this mattress takes it to the next level. Here, you’ll find that virtually no movement transfers to the other side of the bed, so you can sleep comfortably even when your partner tosses and turns. Our practical and simulation tests both returned outstanding results.

Pressure Relief – 9.3/10

Despite the thinner comfort layers on this mattress, it does a great job of relieving pressure. The materials keep you lifted out of the mattress, reducing discomfort and preventing returning pressure from the core of the mattress. Our testers didn’t complain about pressure points, and most had great experiences.

Ease of Movement – 9.2/10

The layers of foam within the Douglas Original don’t sink, making it a good choice for those who need to move around a lot at night. While the mattress contours to your body, you are never left feeling stuck in the mattress. It is never difficult to move around on top of the mattress. Our testers reported that it was easy to change positions. We also observed quick material response times, so it was never a struggle to get out of the indents in the mattress.

Who is the Douglas Original Mattress For?

  • Canadians who sleep hot. Those who sleep hot can appreciate the breathable cooling features that don’t allow heat to build up inside the mattress.
  • Restless partners. The motion isolation features keep you comfortable even when your partner is tossing and turning.
  • Side sleepers and those who need pressure relief. This mattress is ideal for those who sleep on their sides, as well as Canadians who need better pressure relief from their mattress.

Who Should Avoid the Douglas Original Mattress?

  • Canadians who need additional lumbar support. While this mattress offers great support, it isn’t zoned for better lumbar support. If you need better support in your lower back, this mattress might not do it for you.

The Douglas Original stops motion transfer in its tracks, but it sacrifices bounce. This mattress offers little to no feedback when you move around, which is critical for some Canadians. If you need more feedback (and better targeted lumbar support), consider the Logan & Cove Choice instead.

Best All Foam – Silk & Snow Mattress

  • Temperature Control: 8.0/10
  • Motion Isolation: 9.4/10
  • Edge Support: 8.1/10

  • Bounce: 7.5/10
  • Eco: 8.5/10
  • Response: 8.9/10
  • Ease of Movement: 9.1/10
  • Policies: 9/10

Highlights

  • Motion isolation is ideal for couples with restless partners
  • Great pressure relief, even with thin comfort layers
  • Responsive materials make movement easier

At just $800 for a Queen, the Silk & Snow Mattress is one of the best all-foam mattresses you can get without spending a fortune. This mattress uses three layers of high-quality memory foam to create a comfortable feel, with better motion isolation and pressure relief than some of the other mattresses on our list. While this mattress could improve in various ways, it does a great job for such an affordable price.

Silk & Snow Mattress Construction

Examining the layers used to create the Silk & Snow Mattress
Examining the layers used to create the Silk & Snow Mattress
  • Antimicrobial Cover. The cover of the mattress uses antimicrobial materials to restrict the growth of bacteria. This means that your bed remains fresh and comfortable for longer. The cover is also removable and washable.
  • 2” High-Density Cooling Gel Foam. The top layer of gel memory foam helps isolate and reduce motion and higher temperatures. This layer helps with pressure relief, too.
  • 2” Transitional Performance Foam. A middle layer of transition foam stops motion before it travels to the other side of the bed, so you can stay asleep even when your partner is restless. This layer also aligns your spine.
  • 6” Premium Base Layer Foam. The base of the mattress provides strong support and motion isolation. This hefty polyfoam reduces discomfort by helping the other layers do their job better.

Silk & Snow Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 8.0/10

Though this mattress uses some temperature control features, it doesn’t do enough to stop heat from building up. The layers of memory foam reduce discomfort, but they ultimately do little to remove heat from the mattress. Our heat maps showed more build-up than we like to see, and it was extremely slow to vent once it built up.

Motion Isolation – 9.4/10

The Silk & Snow mattress performed well in both rounds of motion isolation testing, including practical tests and tests with weighted balls. No matter how we tested this mattress, we found minimal transfer from one side of the bed to the other. Our machines picked up minimal vibrations, and our testers reported they could only feel larger movements.

Pressure Relief – 9.7/10

The comfort layers on the Silk & Snow Mattress are a little thinner than we usually like to see, which can sometimes mean that pressure relief is worse. However, that wasn’t the case with this mattress. We were surprised that the pressure relief seemed more than adequate. None of our testers had any complaints about how the mattress felt, which was remarkable.

Ease of Movement – 9.1/10

Because of the high-density foam layers within the Silk & Snow mattress, it’s easy to move around on top of the mattress. You’ll find that the indents don’t slow you down. While this mattress doesn’t perform as well as some others, our testers had minimal complaints about feeling stuck in the mattress.

Who is the Silk & Snow Mattress For?

  • Canadians who need better pressure relief. For all but the heaviest sleepers, the Silk & Snow Mattress offers optimal pressure relief.
  • Couples with restless partners. If your partner is often restless and disturbs your sleep, the motion isolation from this mattress can be perfect.
  • Those who appreciate transparency. The Silk & Snow Mattress, like all of the mattresses from this company, transparently sources all of its materials. You’ll be able to find out where each part of the mattress comes from.

Who Should Avoid the Silk & Snow Mattress?

  • Canadians who sleep hot. This mattress offers minimal temperature control features to reduce heat for those who sleep hot.

One of the areas where the Silk & Snow Mattress could improve is temperature control. If you sleep hot and need a mattress that does a better job with heat, consider the Endy Hybrid. This hybrid offers better breathability than foam mattresses alone, and this model in particular performed extremely well in our temperature control tests.

Best Luxury Hybrid – Logan & Cove Choice

  • Temperature Control: 9.4/10
  • Motion Isolation: 6.2/10
  • Edge Support: 9.7/10

  • Bounce: 9.8/10
  • Eco: 8.7/10
  • Response: 10/10
  • Ease of Movement: 10/10
  • Policies: 9.5/10

Highlights

  • Great temperature control
  • Comfortable, plush surface reduces pressure and strain
  • Extremely responsive materials with extra bounce

Logan & Cove is known for providing luxurious mattresses, but the Choice won’t break the bank. Instead, it uses high-quality materials to create a unique sleep experience. Here, you’ll find layers of cooling foams and dense pocket coils. These materials work together for better edge support, temperature control, and responsiveness. This mattress even provides some bounce, which is a priority for many Canadians.

Logan & Cove Choice Mattress Construction

  • Quilted Cover. The cover of the Logan & Cove Choice is a thin Euro-top, which includes a cooling cover made with CryoFusion Nanofibres. A layer of hollow fibre fill adds additional plushness, while gel-infused foam quilted right to the cover reduces discomfort.
  • 1” ecoLuxe Cooling Foam. The top layer of foam within the mattress is ecoLuxe, a type of high-density cooling foam. This layer helps with pressure relief and preventing uncomfortable pressure points.
  • 1.5” Premium Elastex. A middle layer of Elastex acts as responsive as natural latex without some of the chemicals used to create latex mattresses. This layer reduces some motion transfer, promotes proper alignment, and keeps you cushioned from the dense coil layer below.
  • 9” Pocket Coil Layer. The thick steel pocket coils at the base of the mattress are arranged into comfort layers, with thicker coils under your hips and lower back for optimal comfort. These coils are individually wrapped as well, which helps with support and alignment.

Logan & Cove Choice Mattress Performance Scores

A closer look at the layers inside the Logan & Cove Choice

Temperature Control – 9.4/10

Cooling foams and a layer of latex-alternative foam help keep higher temperatures away. Heat won’t build up within the mattress, and any heat that does dissipates quickly. Our heat maps showed fewer periods of high temperatures, and it vented off quickly throughout the night.

Motion Isolation – 6.2/10

The Logan & Cove Choice doesn’t perform well when it comes to motion isolation. The coils carry too much motion across the mattress, even though they are individually pocketed. Testers reported that they could feel almost everything during our practical testing, and our simulation tests returned some of the worst results we’ve seen. If motion isolation is a key feature for you, avoid this mattress.

Pressure Relief- 8.9/10

The Logan & Cove Choice has relatively thin comfort layers, which can contribute to more pressure from the supportive layers of the mattress. Our heavier testers mentioned that they had trouble dealing with pressure some of the time, but lightweight and average sleepers did not.

Ease of Movement – 10/10

This mattress is extremely responsive. The materials reform quickly, springing back into place quickly after you move away. You are less likely to feel stuck in the mattress, which means you can change position easily. We noted an extremely fast response time, and our testers said it was extremely easy to move around on top of the mattress.

Who is the Logan & Cove Choice For?

  • Active sleepers. Quick material response from the materials within this mattress makes it easy to move around on the surface.
  • Hot sleepers. The cooling measures work together to isolate motion, keeping you as cool as possible even if you have night sweats.
  • Canadians who like a bouncy mattress. The Logan & Cove Choice provides a bounce that you won’t often find in modern mattresses. This can be critical for some Canadians.

Who Should Avoid the Logan & Cove Choice?

  • Canadians with restless partners. If your partner tossing and turning sometimes wakes you up, the poor motion isolation in this mattress isn’t going to help.

Alternative Option

The Logan & Cove Choice is a hybrid mattress with thin comfort layers. As such, it doesn’t provide the best motion isolation we’ve seen. If you need a mattress with isolating motion and prevent transferring it from the other side of the bed, consider the Douglas Original mattress. It’s an all-foam option, but it allows virtually no motion to transfer from one side of the bed to the other.

Best Responsive Materials – Endy Hybrid

  • Temperature Control: 9.2/10
  • Motion Isolation: 6.4/10
  • Edge Support: 8.3/10
  • Pressure Relief: 9.3/10
  • Bounce: 9.9/10
  • Eco: 7.0/10
  • Response: 10/10
  • Ease of Movement: 9.7/10
  • Policies: 9/10

Highlights

  • One of the most affordable hybrid mattresses in Canada
  • Extremely responsive materials make for easy movement
  • Good pressure relief for side sleepers

The Endy Hybrid is a responsive mattress that makes movement extremely easy. Combination sleepers and active sleepers can rest more comfortably on the Endy Hybrid because you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. You can move around on the surface easily and without any effort. The layers also help reduce temperatures. Those who suffer from night sweats can sleep more comfortably throughout the night.

Endy Hybrid Mattress Construction

  • Quilted Cover. The cover of the Endy Hybrid is lined with foam to produce a softer feel. The fabric itself is soft to the touch and comfortable to sleep on.
  • Endy Comfort Foam. The top layer of foam is Endy’s proprietary comfort foam. It uses an open-cell construction, which promotes better breathability. You’ll get better airflow and reduced discomfort.
  • Polyfoam Transition Layer. A layer of transition foam cushions your deepest pressure points, keeping you lifted out of the coil layer below. This layer works to add much-needed pressure relief throughout the mattress.
  • Pocket Coil Support Base. The zoned coil base is made with individually wrapped carbon steel coils. These coils are firmer through the centre of the mattress and around the edges, so you’ll get support where you need it most.
  • Stabilizing Support Foam. Endy knows that stabilizing your mattress is important, particularly over time. If you need your mattress to last, this layer will be able to help. Your mattress won’t sag, and it will do a great job of keeping its shape.

Endy Hybrid Mattress Performance Scores

Testing sinkage on the Endy Hybrid with a lightweight dumbbell
Testing sinkage on the Endy Hybrid with a lightweight dumbbell

Temperature Control – 9.3/10

The open-cell foam at the top of the Endy Hybrid helps control temperature better than standard memory foam. It removes heat and keeps you cool, with better breathability to introduce cooler air to your sleeping space. Our heat mapping showed that heat still built up within the mattress, but it also dissipated quickly enough that it didn’t become uncomfortable.

Motion Isolation – 6.4/10

The Endy Mattress is a hybrid, which drastically reduces its ability to isolate motion. While the original Endy mattress is one of the best options for those who need motion isolation, the hybrid version offers poor performance. Our practical and simulation tests both returned surprising results, as we expected the comfort layers within the mattress to hold up better. Here, we were able to feel every movement from the other side of the bed.

Pressure Relief- 9.3/10

While the Endy Hybrid doesn’t offer the thickest comfort layers we’ve seen, the Endy Comfort Foam top layer keeps you elevated out of the mattress. You will still be cradled in the mattress, but you won’t sink in far enough to encounter any pushback or pressure. Most of our testers remained comfortable on the mattress throughout the night, but our heaviest testers encountered some light pressure. This usually wasn’t enough to drastically affect their comfort.

Ease of Movement – 9.7/10

When we tested the Endy Hybrid, we noted an extremely quick response time. The top of the mattress reacted faster than average, allowing for better movement for those who switch positions often. Our testers said it was easy to turn over, change positions, or even move to the other side of the bed without feeling stuck.

Who is the Endy Hybrid For?

  • Active sleepers. Extremely responsive materials make it easy to move around on this mattress, so active sleepers don’t feel stuck in the mattress.
  • Canadians who sleep hot. This mattress has great temperature control. All but those who sleep extremely hot will be more comfortable on this mattress.
  • Side sleepers and those who need better pressure relief. This mattress provides very minimal pressure, great for those who usually suffer from uncomfortable pressure points. If you usually wake up with aches, this mattress may be able to help.

Who Should Avoid the Endy Hybrid?

  • Eco-conscious Canadians. While some of the other mattress brands on our list offer eco-conscious options and practices, the Endy Hybrid does not.

Best Edge Support – Octave Vista

A closer look at the Octave Vista mattress in our testing bedroom
A closer look at the Octave Vista mattress in our testing bedroom
  • Temperature Control: 8.2/10
  • Motion Isolation: 8.5/10
  • Edge Support: 9.7/10
  • Pressure Relief: 8.3/10
  • Bounce: 8.0/10
  • Eco: 8.6/10
  • Response: 8.8/10
  • Ease of Movement: 9.2/10
  • Policies: 9.5/10

Highlights

  • Extremely affordable for most Canadians, even in the larger sizes
  • Great edge support from an all-foam mattress
  • Great balancing and support from the foam layers

The Octave Vista is Octave’s lowest-tier mattress. While both of the other mattresses in their lineup build upon this mattress to create more comfortable options, the Octave Vista does a great job for what it is. It uses layers of proprietary foams, including phase-changing materials and copper-infused foams, to reduce pressure and keep you cooler throughout the night.

Octave Vista Mattress Construction

Testing the responsiveness of the layers inside the Octave Vista
Testing the responsiveness of the layers inside the Octave Vista
  • CryoFusion Cooling Nanofibre Cover. The cover of the Octave Vista is cooling and comfortable. It is woven with CryoFusion cooling fibres, which reduce discomfort by venting off excess heat.
  • 2” CopperGel Memory Foam and PolarMAX. The top layer of foam is a memory foam that is infused with copper. Copper naturally conducts heat away, leaving your favourite spot in the bed comfortable and cooler than average. Copper is also antimicrobial, reducing odours throughout the mattress. This layer is also infused with a PolarMAX coating, which is a phase-changing material that aims to reduce temperatures throughout the night.
  • 2” Elastex Foam. The middle layer is a latex alternative called Elastex. It is often better for those with latex allergies, as it doesn’t contain the same chemicals as natural latex. This layer helps cushion deep pressure points, reducing strain on your joints and promoting better alignment.
  • 8” Zoned Support Foam with Air Channels. A zoned foam layer makes up the bottom of the mattress. This high-density layer is extremely durable and helps with some light motion isolation. There are air channels to vent off heat, as well as areas with firmer foams to reduce strain.

Octave Vista Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 8.2/10

The top layer of this mattress is CopperGel, which is infused with both copper and phase-changing materials. Still, this mattress doesn’t do the best at keeping you cool. These materials don’t do enough to actively fight higher temperatures. While this mattress will work fine for those who don’t overheat a lot at night, our heat mapping tests showed that heat doesn’t vent as well as we like to see.

Motion Isolation – 8.5/10

This all-foam mattress relies on a layer of infused memory foam, as well as a zoned foam base layer with air channels. Because the foam is broken up like this, it is less likely to absorb motion. This mattress doesn’t do a bad job of stopping motion, though. Our testers could feel larger movements, but some smaller movements were completely masked from the other side of the bed. Similarly, ball drop tests showed decreased vibrations after a second or so, despite a larger increase in movement directly after a drop.

Pressure Relief- 8.3/10

The pressure relief in this mattress isn’t what we expected to see, either. It doesn’t do a terrible job, and most lightweight and average sleepers may not notice that the mattress adds pressure at all. However, heavier sleepers will need to look elsewhere. The pressure relief is not enough to keep them from feeling the firm support layer at the base of the mattress.

Ease of Movement – 9.2/10

Despite its flaws, this mattress makes it extremely easy to move around on the surface. Between the Elastex and infused foam comfort layers, you are unlikely to feel as though you are stuck in the mattress. The materials responded at an average rate during our testing, but testers confirmed that it took little to no effort to get out of bed, turn over, or change position.

Who is the Octave Vista Mattress For?

  • Canadians on a budget. While this mattress doesn’t offer the best performance in any singular category, it is ideal for those who need to keep to a strict budget.
  • Combination sleepers. The memory foam and Elastex work together to make it easier to move around on the surface of the mattress, reducing strain and discomfort when you change position.
  • Edge sleepers. One of the standout performance areas for this mattress is edge support. If you sit or sleep near the edge of the bed, it isn’t going to sag under your weight.

Who Should Avoid the Octave Vista Mattress?

  • Those who expect better performance. The Octave Vista performs about average for the price point it comes at. If you want more advanced performance, better cooling, increased pressure relief, and more, you might want to go with a more expensive mattress.

Best Budget – Juno

Getting the Juno mattress ready for testing in our test bedrooms
Getting the Juno mattress ready for testing in our test bedrooms
  • Temperature Control: 8.9/10
  • Motion Isolation: 8.0/10
  • Edge Support: 7.0/10
  • Pressure Relief: 9.3/10
  • Bounce: 7.5/10
  • Eco: 7.0/10
  • Response: 8.9/10
  • Ease of Movement: 8.9/10
  • Policies: 8/10

Highlights

  • Unexpectedly good pressure relief considering the thickness of the mattress
  • Average response and easy movement
  • Moderate temperature control for those who sleep warm

Even among the most affordable mattresses in Canada, the Juno sticks out. It is thinner than other mattresses on our list and doesn’t perform as well in most categories, but it offers the lowest possible price we’ve found in a bed-in-a-box mattress in Canada. This mattress is easily half the price of the other options and can be upgraded for additional breathability. The upgraded cover will, of course, cost extra. If you are on an extremely tight budget and need a mattress with better policies than other options, the Juno is right for you.

Juno Mattress Construction

  • Juno Knit Cover with Cool+. The cover is a comfortable, soft knit fabric that is fully upgradable. If you need additional temperature control, you can choose the cooling cover that adds further breathability to the mattress.
  • 2” Fully Body Cooling Gel Foam. The comfort layer is 2” of cooling foam, which helps with pressure relief and offers some cushioning.
  • 6” Total Support Foam. The core of the mattress is a thick layer of supportive foam. This layer helps with some motion isolation and support, so you can wake up feeling well-rested and ready to take on the day.

Juno Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 8.9/10

Juno’s cooling gel foam layer is great at isolating heat. The breathable Cool+ cover adds a layer of breathability and temperature control, reducing higher temperatures to a comfortable level within the mattress. Our testing was favourable for those who sleep hotter than normal, but the cooling features may not be good enough for those who regularly sleep extremely hot.

Motion Isolation – 8.0/10

Couples can enjoy this mattress, but only if they don’t regularly disturb each other. You’ll be able to feel all but the smallest movements from the other side of the bed, so those who sleep light may want to look elsewhere. However, if motion isolation isn’t an important factor for you and your partner, you’ll be happy with the motion isolation from this mattress.

Pressure Relief – 9.3/10

Because the Juno mattress is thinner than most of the other mattresses on our list, it was surprising to us that it featured better pressure relief than some thicker mattresses. This may be because the support layer isn’t zoned or made to be firmer for better support. Nevertheless, our testers reported zero issues with pressure from this mattress, and even side sleepers had little to say.

Ease of Movement – 8.9/10

Fewer comfort layers mean there’s less foam to feel trapped in. The Juno mattress offers great ease of movement, but the material response time is below average. As a result, side sleepers may experience worse ease of movement results than other sleepers. This is consistent with our tester’s feedback, too.

  • Those who sleep warm. The temperature control features here are enough to keep you from overheating if you sleep a little warmer than average.
  • Couples. Couples who need a bit of motion isolation will enjoy this mattress. However, it isn’t made for those who need a lot of motion isolation.
  • Lightweight side sleepers. The pressure relief from this mattress was great, but only for our lighter side sleepers.

Who Should Avoid the Juno Mattress?

  • Edge sleepers. When it came to edge support, the Juno tested noticeably worse than similar mattresses. The edges sink and slide no matter who sits on the edge, reducing comfort here.

Alternative Option

Juno is a budget mattress that performs about average for most categories. It’s the least expensive option on our list, too. If you are willing to pay a bit more for the Douglas Original, you’ll find better performance in nearly all categories. It even offers better edge support. Still, it comes at an increased price and may not be a good substitute for those on an extremely tight budget.
