Logan & Cove Choice vs Douglas Original

Logan & Cove and Douglas are Canadian owned and operated mattress companies that are both among the Goodmorning.com mattress brands. They are both online companies that are known for good customer service and high-quality mattresses. But how do you know which company’s mattress would be better for you?

At Slumber, we understand how difficult it can be to make a decision between two mattresses based on the descriptions you can find on the companies’ websites. That is why we have developed a mattress testing and rating system that makes it easy to compare mattresses.

In this article, we compare the Choice mattress from Logan & Cove with the Original mattress from Douglas. So continue reading to find out how they performed in our tests and how they compare with each other.

Overview of Logan & Cove and Douglas

As mentioned earlier, Logan & Cove and Douglas both operate under the Goodmorning.com umbrella which was established in 2009. Both Logan & Cove and Douglas are younger companies, having been founded in 2018 and 2017, respectively. Goodmorning.com is one of the most well-known and popular mattress retailers in Canada and as part of the umbrella company, Logan & Cove and Douglas have also built themselves solid reputations.

Logan & Cove is the most luxurious brand among the Goodmorining.com brands, while Douglas is known for their foam mattresses that use innovative cooling technologies to improve your sleeping experience.

All Logan & Cove and Douglas mattresses are made in Canada using materials that are locally sourced as much as possible. By manufacturing their mattresses in Canada, the companies can ensure the quality of their products as well as support the Canadian economy and reduce the mattresses’ carbon footprint.

Logan & Cove Choice vs. Douglas Original Price Comparison

As you can see from the table below, the Logan & Cove Choice mattress is more expensive than the Douglas Original mattress. Depending on the mattress size, the price difference is between $200 and $400. A key reason for the price difference is that the Original is an all-foam mattress, while the Choice is a hybrid using both foam and coils. You can read more about their construction a little later in the article.

While the Choice mattress is more expensive, it is worth remembering that hybrid mattresses are almost always more expensive than all-foam mattresses. And another thing worth noting is that the Choice is a very reasonably priced hybrid mattress among all the hybrid mattresses available in Canada.

Mattress Sizes

Both the Choice and Original mattresses are designed to be used with standard sized bed frames in Canada. Therefore, if you want to match your new mattress with an existing standard-size bed frame, you don’t have to worry whether the mattress will fit.

The only difference here is the height of the mattresses. If you prefer a higher mattress, the Logan & Cove is two inches higher, which will make a difference when getting in and out of bed.

Sleep Trial, Warranty, and Delivery

Sleep Trial

A sleeper trial refers to the period when you can “try” a mattress at home and request to return it for a full refund if you are not happy with it. Being able to request a refund if a mattress doesn’t meet your requirements certainly takes away a lot of the worry associated with purchasing a mattress online.

Both Douglas and Logan & Cove have a 365-night sleep trial policy. This means you have a full year to decide whether the mattress works for you. However, note that you cannot request a return and refund before using the mattress for a minimum of 21 nights. This is because it takes a few weeks for your body to adjust to a new mattress. Between 21 and 365 nights you can contact the customer service who will arrange for the mattress to be picked up for free and initiate the refund.

Warranty

A warranty period refers to the length of time a mattress is covered against manufacturing or material defects. Both Logan & Cove and Douglas have long warranty periods: 15 and 20 years respectively. Because the terms of warranty vary from one company to the next, we always recommend you check the details of what exactly is covered in the warranty with the company before ordering.

Delivery

Many Canadian mattress companies offer free deliveries on mattresses, including Douglas and Logan & Cove. Delivery to most parts of Canada is free, except for remote areas such as northern Manitoba and northern Quebec.  You can check the full list of areas that incur a delivery on the Logan & Cove and Douglas websites. Both companies currently charge a shipping fee of $250 to the listed areas. .

Mattress Construction and Performance

When we receive a mattress for testing we conduct a range of tests to rate how well the mattress performs in the following areas: temperature regulation, motion isolation, and edge support. We also use testing to give the mattress a firmness rating and study how the mattress is constructed.

Below, we compare the construction of the two mattresses and reveal how they performed in our tests. With the help of our straightforward scoring system, you can easily compare the performance of the Choice and Original mattresses.

Differences in the Construction of the Logan & Cove Choice and Douglas Original Mattresses

The key difference between the Choice and Original mattress is that the former is a hybrid mattress and the latter is a full-foam mattress. However, there are also other construction differences that influence how the mattress performs while sleeping on it.

The Choice mattress combines two layers of foam with a layer of coils. The top foam layer is cooling ecoLuxe gel foam that is designed to wick heat away from you. The second layer is Elastex foam designed to mimic natural latex. The foam layers are on top of a 9″ thick coil layer that is arranged in ergonomic zones for better support and motion isolation. Logan & Cove uses Cryofusion Nanofibres in the mattress cover to further improve the mattress’s cooling properties.

The Original has three layers of foam that are covered with Douglas’s CoolSense cover. This removable and washable cover is designed to remove heat and moisture away from you. The top layer is made with ecoLight cooling gel foam, while the middle is Elastex foam. The final layer of the mattress is six inches thick high-density foam to support the other layers and the shape of the mattress.

Temperature Control

Logan & Cove Choice 8.9/10; Douglas Original 8.7/10

When we score a mattress for temperature regulation we test how well it lets hot air flow away from you. When hot air and moisture are moved away from you, you can maintain a more comfortable body temperature while you sleep.

Both the Choice and Original scored very high for temperature regulation. There was very little difference between the mattresses and both will help most Canadians to sleep comfortably without overheating or sweating caused by trapped heat. While we expected a good result from the Choice since hybrids often have good airflow and cooling, we were positively surprised by the score for the Original because all-foam mattresses have a reputation of sleeping hot.

Motion Isolation

Logan & Cove Choice 8.5/10; Douglas Original 9.6/10

Motion isolation refers to a mattress’s ability to prevent vibrations from movement from travelling across the mattress. This performance feature is important to anyone sharing a bed since poor motion isolation can lead to disrupted sleep.

Foam mattresses often have better motion isolation than hybrid mattresses and this is true for the Original and Choice mattresses. In fact, the Original got a near-perfect score which makes it an excellent mattress for Canadians who sleep with a partner or have kids often climbing into bed with them. However, the Choice’s score is also very respectable thanks to the individually pocketed coils and most people would be satisfied with its motion isolation abilities.

Edge Support

Logan & Cove Choice 9.0/10; Douglas Original 6.0/10

Edge support is an important quality in a mattress as it can help the mattress maintain its shape in everyday use. It is especially important for people who like to sleep on the edge of the mattress or who need a stronger edge to support getting in and out of bed.

When we tested the Choice and Original mattresses for their edge support, we were not surprised to find that the Choice has a significantly stronger edge than the Original; foam mattresses are not known for having strong edges and on the other hand, the Choice uses stronger coils around the perimeter to create a more supportive edge. So if you need a mattress with a strong edge, the Choice is the better option for you.

Firmness and Comfort

Logan & Cove Choice 6.5/10; Douglas Original 6.5/10

We use sinkage testing and feedback from our testers to rate the firmness level of a mattress and based on the tests and feedback, the Choice and Original are medium-firm mattresses. This means they are suitable for most Canadians, offering a good balance of contouring and support so your spine stays in the correct alignment while you sleep and preventing pressure points from forming.

Firmness Chart 6.5
The Logan & Cove Choice and Douglas Original are both 6.5 on our firmness scale.

We say most Canadians because how firm and comfortable a mattress feels is subjective and depends on your body type and sleeping position. For example, a lighter sleeper may find the Choice and Original mattresses too firm, especially if they prefer to sleep on their side. On the other hand, heavier sleepers may find their hips and shoulders sinking too much which can result in an uncomfortable sleeping position.

Final Verdict: Which Mattress is Right for You?

We have included all the key details on the Choice and Original mattresses in the table below to make it easy to make a final comparison between them. The key differences are how the mattresses isolate motion and how supportive the edge is. People who need extra motion isolation are likely to prefer the Original while those who need a more supportive edge should consider the Choice.

Other deciding factors will be the mattress construction and your budget. If you have not had a foam bed before, you may be inclined towards the Choice which is a hybrid. However, you will have the benefit of the sleep trial whichever mattress you choose if you are not sure if you prefer hybrid or foam. Finally, people who are looking for quality at a lower price point are likely to prefer the Original. However, the Choice is very competitively priced, especially for a hybrid mattress.
