Mattress Sizes and Retailers in Canada

When you are choosing a new mattress, it can be challenging to know where to start with so many different companies selling mattresses in Canada. We at Slumber want to make your sleep-related decisions easier.

In this article, we explain the common mattress sizes in Canada to help you decide what mattress size is the best for you. We also look at the mattress offerings from some established and some newer mattress retailers in the country so you know your options.

Let’s recap, what are the mattress sizes in Canada?

Mattress Sizes in Canada Chart

In Canada, you can choose from seven standard sizes for mattresses from twin to California King. There are also smaller ones available for children’s beds and larger ones than the California King but often you would have to get any bigger mattresses, or other special sizes and shapes, made to order. In this article, we wanted to focus on standard-size mattresses because the vast majority of Canadians sleep on standard-size beds.

A twin mattress, which is sometimes called a single mattress, measures 96 cm x 189 cm (38 in x 74 in). They are designed for single-sleepers and are often used by bigger children and teenagers. They are also common in dormitories and small apartments.

Twin XL is the same width as a regular twin but longer to accommodate taller sleepers. The mattress measures 96 cm x 202 cm (38 in x 79 in). Note that while regular twin-size mattresses can be used in bunk beds, the twin XL will be too long for regular bunk beds.

A full-size mattress is often called a double mattress. It is 134 cm wide and 189 cm long (53 in x 74 in). They are great for single people who prefer to have more space. While they are used by couples, many couples find them too narrow to comfortably accommodate two people.

The full-size mattress also comes as an extra-long option. It is also a little wider than the standard option at 137 cm. It is 203 cm long (54 in x 80 in). The extra length makes the XL option better for taller people and the extra width gives couples a little more space. However, most couples still prefer to size up for comfort.

A queen-size mattress measures 152 cm x 202 cm (60 in x 79 in). This is the most popular mattress size in Canada. It is big enough to accommodate two people but does not take up as much space as the king-size mattresses.

King-size mattresses are the second most popular choice among couples in Canada. The measurements are 193 cm wide and 202 cm long (76 in x 79 in). You gain 41 cm on the width but the length is the same as the queen. This size is great for people who prefer extra space when sharing a bed, especially those who often sleep hot.

The final common mattress size is the California King measuring 183 cm x 213 cm (72 in x 84 in). It is not as wide as the standard king mattress but it is longer and therefore a great option for taller Canadians or people who like to have their pet sleeping at the bottom of their beds.

Five Newer Mattress Companies in Canada

Testing Mattresses from Mattress Companies in Canada

At Slumber, we always strive to bring you a balanced choice of products and companies to choose from and Canada is home to a range of smaller mattress companies that are making a name for themselves for their comfortable and innovative products. Here are five of those companies.

Haven Sleep Co

Haven Sleep Co. has been in business for less than a decade but has already firmly established itself as a quality mattress retailer in Canada. It was founded in 2016 in Moncton, New Brunswick. All the mattresses are made in Canada using locally sourced materials with production facilities in Moncton, Toronto, and Calgary to ensure faster delivery times and to reduce carbon footprint.

Haven’s selection includes both all-foam and hybrid mattresses. They also have a selection of RV mattresses for Canadian RV enthusiasts to ensure you sleep as comfortably when travelling as you do when at home.

Juno

Juno is a great option for budget-conscious shoppers, delivering Canadian quality at a budget-friendly price. It is one of the brands under the GoodMorning.com umbrella. The mattresses from Juno are known for their comfort, proving that a lower price does not need to mean lower quality.

You can choose between the Juno Original and the Juno Cool+ mattresses. The latter is an excellent choice if you often sleep hot. Both mattress types are also available as an RV option. The mattresses have a 15-year warranty starting from the date of the delivery and you also benefit from Juno’s 120-night sleep trial.

Hamuq

Hamuq is a Canadian mattress brand based in Toronto, Ontario. All the mattresses are made in Canada in partnership with FineCotton, Galaxy, and VitaFoam to ensure all the manufacturing processes are safe and that all workers receive fair pay. Hamuq uses materials that are environmentally friendly and their shipping is carbon neutral, making the brand a great choice for environmentally-conscious shoppers.

There are two types of Hamuq mattresses available: the Original and the Organic, which are both hybrid mattresses. Hamuq also has a crib mattress available. The mattresses are known for excellent motion isolation and are topped with CoolClean™ cover, which is hypoallergenic and temperature regulating so you can sleep cooler.

Douglas

Douglas is one of the youngest Canadian mattress brands (owned by GoodMorning.com), with the company launching its first mattresses in 2017. All Douglas mattresses are made in Canada using high-performance materials that are eco-conscious and sourced in Canada.

There are three different mattresses to choose from: the Original, the Alpine, and the Summit. The same options are also available in RV size. Douglas offers one of the most generous sleep trials; you can try the mattress for a full year and return it for a full refund during that time as long as certain conditions are met. In addition, the mattresses come with a 20-year warranty.

Final Thoughts

Canada has many fantastic companies that sell mattresses. While others, such as Leon’s and Sleep Country Canada carry brands from several mattress makers, others focus on selling their own mattresses. You will find that all the companies selling mattresses offer all the standard mattresses sizes and some offer special sizes, too, including RV and customised sizes.

When you are choosing a new mattress it is important to pick the right size for you, depending on your sleeping preferences, circumstances, and room size. You can always discuss your preferences with the staff at any of these companies, who will be happy to guide you further in choosing the ideal mattress for you.
