Casper Original Hybrid Mattress Review

The Impressive Original Casper Mattress

The Casper Original Hybrid is one of the original mattresses offered by Casper. This thinner hybrid isn’t as expensive as their luxury models but offers more than the more affordable options that Casper has recently added to their lineup. It sits at a comfortable place between value and performance, with great scores in most performance areas. It’s also extremely supportive, made with proprietary materials, and won’t break the bank.

This mattress is great for those who sleep hot, as well as those who need edge support and pressure relief. If you have a little more than average to spend, this mattress can offer an enhanced experience that you won’t find elsewhere.

Our Methodology

Each time we receive a mattress, we put it through the same testing process. First, we look at how the mattress is made, including its materials and construction. Then, we submit it to various tests that ensure that we can track how it performs across various circumstances. We use practical testing with our team of testers as well as simulation testing with our testing equipment.

Both of these tests give us a good idea of how the mattress may perform for different Canadians. We look at various factors, feedback from multiple sources, and our testing scores to determine if the mattress is good enough to be featured on Slumber. This is how we can predict how a mattress can work for you–we’ve already put it through its paces!

Mattress Details

The Casper Original is a bestselling Casper mattress that uses a tried-and-true construction to create a unique feel. Every material used within the mattress is proprietary, with an emphasis on materials that remove heat from your sleep environment. This hybrid has 3.5” of comfortable materials, which is more than enough for most lightweight and average Canadians to feel comfortable and well-supported.

This mattress uses perforated foams, zoned foams, and a flexible coil base to deliver the best back and full-body support. The edges are well-supported through a combination of edge encasement foam and edge support woven into the cover. All of the materials used are of the highest quality. Most are unique to Casper, giving this mattress an edge that you won’t find in other mattresses.

This is a great option if you sleep hot, need pressure relief, or suffer from back pain. If you need motion isolation or are a heavier sleeper, this may not be the mattress for you. Still, it comes at a modest price when compared to some of Casper’s advanced offerings, so it may be worth trying out.

Casper Original Hybrid Mattress Prices and Sizes

The Casper Original Hybrid is not a cheap mattress, but it isn’t quite a luxury mattress either. It fits in a comfortable space between price and quality. In this instance, you get what you pay for. As a hybrid, it offers strong support and fetches a higher price than foam alone. Among mattresses at this price point, it performs extremely well.

The Casper Original Hybrid is available in six standard mattress sizes. It is 11” thick and starts at $1,399 for a Twin. The Queen, which is the most popular size in Canada, comes in at $1999. There is no Split King option available, but you can use two Twin XL mattresses on your split adjustable frame if you have the need.

Mattress Construction

This hybrid mattress uses a standard three-layer design. This stack of foam and coils is wrapped in a cozy knit cover for ultimate comfort.

  • The Cover: The cover of the Casper Original Hybrid is an extremely soft and comfortable knit material. This cover slides well under your sheets, regardless of which material you choose. A firmer border sewn into the cover helps reduce sinking at the edges, boosting edge support to make it easier to get out of bed.
  • The 1st Layer: The first layer of foam within the mattress is Casper’s AirScape foam, a responsive layer of foam that works like memory foam, but with more bounce. There are hundreds of small perforations throughout this layer, all of which work to funnel heat away and supply fresh, cold air to your sleeping surface.
  • The 2nd Layer: The middle layer of the Casper Original Hybrid is premium memory foam, zoned for better comfort. The foam cradles your body, but it is firmer in the middle for better alignment and comfort. This layer helps keep you aligned, reduces pressure, and cushions your body from the coil layer below.
  • The 3rd Layer: The final layer of this hybrid mattress is the 100% steel Flex coils. These coils provide great support for the whole mattress, and they won’t sink or sag over time. The coils are pocketed for better motion isolation and pressure relief, and the entire layer is encased in firm edge support foam to reduce loss of support near the edge of the mattress.

One of the most unique things about this Casper hybrid (and some of their other hybrid mattresses) is that the coils aren’t zoned. The foam layer above the coils is zoned, which helps reduce strain and keep you comfortable. This change makes this mattress stand out and offers some level of support that you won’t find in more standard hybrid mattresses.

Mattress Performance Test Results

Once we received all of our tester feedback, performance scores, and opinions from our sleep experts, we created composite scores that considered and included all of the information we had. The scores below reflect how the mattress held up on average.

Temperature Control (9.1/10)

Waking up with night sweats is surprisingly common. A majority of Canadians sleep hot, and a large percentage of those Canadians find themselves waking up uncomfortably warm in the middle of the night. To fight this, mattresses have included measures to increase breathability, decrease heat build-up, and help you deal with higher temperatures throughout the night. A score of at least 8 in this category is essential for those who sleep hot, but higher scores are better.

The Casper Original Hybrid performed well for us in terms of temperature control. The combination of breathable pocket coils and perforated foam at the top of the mattress made it breathable, and heat didn’t really get a chance to build up. Some hotter sleepers still became a bit uncomfortable, but most of our testers slept noticeably cooler on this mattress.

Motion Isolation (7.2/10)

Motion isolation is an important factor to consider if you share a bed. If you find yourself waking up when your partner tosses and turns, a mattress with better motion isolation may be ideal for you. These mattresses use materials that absorb motion well to reduce discomfort and improve the way that the mattress handles even the largest motions. A score of at least 7.5 here will be okay for most Canadians, but those with extremely restless partners (or those who sleep extremely light) may need a higher score.

Unfortunately, this was one of the only testing areas where the Casper Original Hybrid just didn’t meet our expectations. The coils make this mattress move a lot, which is great for responsiveness but not for isolating motion. Our testers could feel most larger motions and even some of the smaller ones from the other side of the bed. Our testing equipment detected a lot of vibration after our ball drop testing, even with lighter balls. We can’t recommend this mattress to anyone who needs motion isolation to sleep more comfortably.

Edge Support (9.4/10)

Edge support performance is important if you often sleep near the edge of the bed. It can also be important for Canadians who sit on the edge of the bed to wake up in the morning. A lack of edge support can make it feel like you are slipping off the bed and may lead to discomfort and loss of support when you sleep there. If edge support isn’t a concern for your sleep style, a score of 7 or so is fine here. Edge sleepers need a much higher score to remain comfortable.

The Casper Original Hybrid features some strong edge support, reducing slipping and sagging drastically when you sit at the edge of the bed. Between the firmer edge support woven into the cover and the encasement foam that surrounds the coils, the edges stay firm in most cases. Our testers who tend to gravitate towards the edge reported a noticeable support level that didn’t taper off when they sat directly on the edge of the bed.

Firmness and Feel of the Casper Original Hybrid Mattress

The Casper Original Hybrid is a medium-firm mattress. It rates about a 6 on our firmness scale. We use our scale to give you a good idea of how a mattress will feel. We assign each of our mattresses a rating between 1 and 10, with soft mattresses rating closer to 1 and firmer mattresses rating closer to 10.

Firmness Chart 6
The Casper Original Hybrid is a 6 on our firmness scale.

This mattress is supportive because of the coils, but the comfort layers are only 3.5” thick. This is fine for the most part, but it can lead to some pressure for heavier sleepers. Despite the thinner comfort layers, however, this mattress did perform well for most of our testers in the pressure relief department. Thankfully, it does enough to keep you lifted out of the mattress to prevent feeling stuck. At the same time, it contours to your body to keep you supported where you need it most.

This mattress also tested extremely well for material response. This means that the materials reform quickly when you move away, eliminating body indents. It’s easier to move around and get into a new position, so getting comfortable is so much easier.

Performance for Different Weights and Sleeping Preferences

We design our testing scores to give you the best possible idea of how a mattress will work for you. Even with these scores and our hours of testing in mind, a mattress will work differently for everyone who uses it. This is determined by several factors, including how you sleep and your body type. Here, we’ll look at how these factors can affect how comfortable you are on this mattress.

Weight Considerations

Mattresses react differently to different body types and weights. The Casper Original Hybrid is great for those who weigh up to 250 pounds, but it may get a little uncomfortable after that. That’s because the comfort layers are only 3.5” thick, which can lead to some sinking and pressure points. Average and lightweight sleepers should find that this mattress works well.

There’s also the issue of support. The coils within this mattress are extremely supportive, but they can be less supportive for heavier sleepers. This can add additional pressure and allow you to feel some of the firm coils below. For this reason, it’s important to find a mattress that offers thicker comfort layers or denser foam layers.

We can recommend this mattress to lighter and average sleepers, though–it feels great if you aren’t pressing into the mattress too hard, which unfortunately rules out some Canadians.

Sleeping Positions

Each sleeping position requires different levels of support and pressure relief to stay comfortable. One mattress is unlikely to work for every sleeping position, so it’s important to see how a mattress will work for you before you make a purchase.

  • Side Sleepers: Side sleepers spend a lot of time with their hips and shoulders pressed into the mattress. As a result, they need pressure relief most of all. They also need proper alignment, as this press can sometimes leave their backs unsupported. The Casper Original Hybrid isn’t quite thick enough to eliminate pressure, but it worked well for our side sleepers for the most part.
  • Back Sleepers: Back sleepers need contouring and support to remove pressure and discomfort from their sleep environment. Sleeping on your back can lead to feeling stiff if you don’t have the right level of support. Though the Casper Original Hybrid has minimal sinkage, it does a good job of keeping back sleepers supported.
  • Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleepers need firm support from the core of a mattress, as well as a soft top to remain comfortable and eliminate pressure. The Casper Original Hybrid isn’t too soft, but it’s softer than most of the other medium-firm mattresses we’ve covered. Most stomach sleepers will be okay, but lighter sleepers may need a softer mattress.
  • Combination Sleepers: Combination sleepers need to move around a lot to remain comfortable. Thankfully, this mattress is extremely responsive. That means you are unlikely to feel stuck in the mattress. It’s easy to move around and change positions without becoming uncomfortable.

Delivery, Sleep Trials, & Returns

Casper is a North American company with a major focus on the US mattress market. Even so, some of the mattresses they offer are made in Canada and exclusive to residents of this country. Any mattresses purchased in Canada ship from domestic warehouses and arrive at your door between 3 to 7 business days after shipping.

In some locations, delivery may take longer. Some areas also require a delivery fee, including the Canadian territories. Make sure to check on the Casper website to see if your location requires a shipping fee before you make your purchase. Returns are free to most locations during your sleep trial.

The first 100 nights that you own your mattress are important. During this time, you can try the mattress to see if it works for you. You’ll have to keep it for the first 30 nights, as this is generally how long it takes for your body to adjust to a new mattress. After these first 30 days, you can choose to return the mattress if it doesn’t suit you. Casper will schedule a time to pick up the mattress and initiate a full refund. If you decide to keep the mattress, you’ll have a 10-year limited warranty.

  • Shipping Cost: Free (with some exceptions)
  • Time to Delivery: 3 to 7 business days
  • Courier: Various
  • Sleep Trial Length: 100 nights
  • Warranty: 10 Year Limited
  • Ease of Return: Free pick up and full refund after an initial 30-day period.

Company Background

Casper is one of the most popular mattress companies in North America, specifically in the US and Canada. They make a range of mattresses, in addition to bedding, duvets, bedroom furniture, pillows, and more. Most of Casper’s mattresses are luxurious, with a price tag to match the premium materials they offer.

In addition, Casper has great policies surrounding their mattresses. Used mattresses are donated when possible, for example. Casper attempts to meet industry standards throughout their business, including adopting more affordable mattresses and maintaining showrooms where you can test each mattress before you buy.

Commitment to the Environment

As a company, Casper has no major commitment to the environment. This company uses responsibly sourced materials, however. All of the foams they use throughout their mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified, which means they don’t contain harmful chemicals. Some of the covers they use on their mattresses are even made from recycled bottles, and there are some eco-conscious options you can choose to reduce your carbon footprint.

Casper Original Hybrid vs Other Casper Mattresses

The Casper Original Hybrid occupies an important niche in Casper’s lineup. It isn’t a luxury hybrid, but it isn’t an affordable option either. This provides good coverage for the space between two of Casper’s most popular hybrids: the budget Casper Atlas and the luxuriously cool Casper Wave Hybrid Snow.

Casper Original Hybrid vs Casper Atlas

Casper Atlas is one of the newest mattresses in the Casper lineup. This mattress is a budget hybrid that comes at a fraction of the cost of the Original Hybrid. It features good edge support and pressure relief, with thinner comfort layers. Regardless, it offers more bounce than the Casper Original Hybrid.

Still, the Original Hybrid outclasses it in a few different ways. The Original Hybrid offers better temperature control, edge support, pressure relief, and response. However, the Casper Atlas isolates motion better. Plus, it is a little less than the Original Hybrid, so it may appeal to Canadians on a budget. You should choose the option that works best for you based on these trade-off features.

Casper Original Hybrid vs Casper Wave Hybrid Snow

Casper Wave Hybrid in a minimalist bedroom

The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow is one of Casper’s luxury mattresses. It features a fully recycled cover, a host of cooling foams, and phase-changing materials. The comfort layers are full and thick for better pressure relief. The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow is one of the only mattresses we’ve given a perfect pressure relief score.

It performs better than the Original Hybrid when it comes to temperature control, but the Original Hybrid is more responsive and has better edge support. Both have similarly poor motion isolation. It’s also worth noting that the Wave Hybrid Snow is almost double the price of the Original Hybrid, which may deter some Canadians.

Competing Canadian Mattress Comparisons

Now, we’ll look at how the Casper Original Hybrid compares to options like the Logan & Cove Frontier and the Endy Hybrid, both extremely popular mattresses on the Canadian mattress market.

Casper Original Hybrid vs Logan & Cove Frontier Mattress

The Logan & Cove Frontier, ready to be tested
The Logan & Cove Frontier, ready to be tested

The Logan & Cove Frontier is a luxurious and plush hybrid mattress. It uses a comfortable Euro-top to reduce pressure and increase comfort, allowing you to sink into a cloudlike surface before drifting off to sleep. It occupies a similar price range as the Original Hybrid, though it is a little less expensive for some sizes. Two layers of coils and a comfortable top make this mattress stand out.

When it comes to performance, it has some edge over the Original Hybrid. The Logan & Cove Frontier performs about the same in temperature control, motion isolation, and edge support. However, it provides better pressure relief and a focus on eco-conscious materials, which may be an important distinction for some Canadians.

Casper Original Hybrid vs Endy Hybrid

Performance testing the Endy Hybrid mattress
Performance testing the Endy Hybrid mattress

The Endy Hybrid is a budget-focused option that is made with proprietary open-cell foams. This mattress is one of the least expensive on the Canadian market, so it fits into a different category than the Original Hybrid. However, it has some areas where it performs slightly better. The Endy Hybrid has better pressure relief and bounce but performs the same in nearly every other category.

Both mattresses have similarly poor motion isolation, but the Casper Original Hybrid scored nearly one full point higher than the Endy Hybrid. Even if this is a secondary factor you want to consider, it’s important to note the difference. The Original Hybrid also performs better when it comes to edge support.

Should You Buy the Casper Original Hybrid Mattress?

If you have a little bit more to spend, it can’t hurt to try the Casper Original Hybrid Mattress. Though the price point is a bit more than some of the other hybrids we’ve looked at in the past, you are getting Casper-brand quality for your money. The risk-free 100-night sleep trial makes it worth checking out, and we’re sure that most Canadians will like it if they give it a try.

Highlights of the Casper Original Hybrid Mattress

This mattress has quite a few highlights that are important to consider before you buy. First, it is extremely responsive. This mattress feels great and reforms quickly once you move away, so you never feel as though you are stuck in the mattress. It offers great edge support, pressure relief, and cooling as well. This mattress uses proprietary materials, including additional edge support and a layer of zoned transition foam, to enhance how well it works.

Areas for Improvement

Overall, the Casper Original Hybrid tested well in most categories. However, there were a few areas where it could improve. The motion isolation scores raised the biggest red flags for us. While this isn’t exactly unexpected considering that this is a hybrid mattress, the materials on top of the coil layer could provide better motion isolation overall. Off-gassing is also a concern. It took a little longer to off-gas than we generally like to see, with the odour completely dissipating after a full two weeks.

Our Recommendations for the Casper Original Hybrid Mattress

We recommend the Casper Original Hybrid Mattress to side sleepers, back sleepers, and combination sleepers that weigh less than 250 pounds. It’s a great mattress for those who sleep hot, those who need a mattress they can move around on, and those who need better pressure relief to remain comfortable. It’s also a great option for edge sleepers, so those who have a little more to spend can get the quality they deserve.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for the Casper Original Hybrid to off-gas?

This mattress takes a bit longer to off-gas when compared to other mattresses. Some mattresses may take a week to off-gas, while this one can take up to two weeks to become completely odour-free after you set it up.

How should I set this mattress up?

The Casper Original Hybrid comes wrapped up and compressed in a cardboard box. You should move this box to the room where you will set the mattress up. Open the box on top of the mattress foundation and slide the plastic-covered mattress out. Use scissors to carefully puncture the plastic and unroll the mattress. It can take up to 48 hours for the mattress to reach its intended size.

What is the weight limit for this mattress?

Casper mattresses don’t have a weight limit. They are suitable for couples and heavier sleepers, and you don’t have to worry about exceeding a weight limit for them to remain comfortable. While you can expect different comfort results based on your body type, there’s no weight limit you need to observe to use the mattress.

Is this mattress good for hot sleepers?

This mattress performed well for hot sleepers, with a temperature control score that outclassed many of the mattresses we’ve seen in the same category. If you sleep hot, this mattress may be able to keep you cool.

This mattress is in a good price range for a hybrid, though some hybrids offer better performance for less. Ultimately, the unique features may make this mattress worth the price to some Canadians.

Is the Casper Original Hybrid made in Canada?

No, the Casper Original Hybrid is not made in Canada. Most Casper mattresses are made in the US, and any mattresses sold in Canada come from Canadian warehouses.
