Octave Horizon Mattress Review

Premium Comfort with Strong Roots

Octave’s Horizon mattress is an all-foam model at the top of their roster. This mattress is the upgraded version of the other Octave mattresses, including the Vista and the Mirage. This model has upgraded temperature control, pressure relief, and response to bring you better comfort overall.

As an all-foam mattress, the temperature control on this option stands out. It uses cooling fibres throughout the cover, as well as phase-changing material to reduce higher temperatures throughout the mattress. This option is a thicker mattress that is best for heavier side sleepers, as it provides some of the best pressure relief among Octave mattresses. A 365-night trial and moderately affordable price make this a good choice for most Canadians.

Our Methodology

Each of the mattresses we review receives a rank from us. This ranking is based on a combination of performance scores and several important features, including temperature control, motion isolation, and even edge support. These are the features that Canadians value most, so we try to make sure that the mattress has something to offer for everyone.

Our testing process includes putting each mattress through a range of different tests. We use both practical and simulation usage tests, which cover a wide range of use cases. This means we can cover most circumstances where the mattress will be used. We know how the mattress reacts, which makes it easier for us to recommend it to different types of sleepers. Plus, we listen to the feedback from testers and experts to find how a mattress works best and who it works best for.

Mattress Details

The Octave Horizon is a Canadian all-foam mattress that offers a more luxurious construction and performance than most other options on the Canadian market. It outpaces the other Octave mattresses available, providing an updated construction and profile that prioritizes comfort and temperature control.

This mattress uses a combination of cooling nanofibres, phase-changing materials, copper-infused memory foam, and perforated latex for cooling. These materials eliminate higher temperatures, introducing more airflow through the core of the mattress. They allow the Octave Horizon to stay cool, and it receives one of the best temperature control scores we’ve ever given an all-foam mattress.

Other features that stand out in this mattress are its pressure relief. Of course, most all-foam mattresses will have good pressure relief, but this one is thick and comfortable enough for even the heaviest side sleepers to get comfortable. The materials keep you lifted out of the mattress, with strong support that doesn’t push back on your body. The result is better comfort across the surface, with the perfect alignment for every sleeping position.

The unique and premium materials used throughout the mattress make it one of the best options in Canada, especially for those who need an all-foam mattress that excels where these models are usually weaker.

Octave Horizon Mattress Prices and Sizes

The Octave Horizon is affordable for what it offers, especially when you consider that it is the upgraded options available from the company. A Queen size is only $1,500, which isn’t too bad for a luxurious all-foam mattress. Octave has frequent sales, promotions, and bundle deals that can reduce the price and add additional accessories to your purchase.

Octave Horizon is available in all six standard mattress sizes, as well as Split King. Split King is twice as expensive as the Twin XL size because it ships two Twin XL mattresses. This size is made for split adjustable frames, where each side of the bed can be adjusted independently.

Mattress Construction

Looking at the layers of foam inside the Octave Horizon mattress

The Octave Horizon is the top-of-the-line when it comes to Octave all-foam mattresses. This option uses five layers of specialty foam to relieve pressure, reduce higher temperatures, and keep you comfortable all night. Here’s how each layer helps the mattress keep you comfortable.

  • The Cover: The Octave Horizon features a soft cooling cover, woven with CryoFusion cooling nanofibres. This cover uses these fibres to direct heat away from you, keeping you cool even if you usually sleep hot. This cover uses 50% more cooling fibres than the next step down in Octave’s lineup. It can also be removed and washed at home.
  • The 1st Layer: The top layer of the Octave Horizon is made of 2.5” of CopperGel foam. This special memory foam is infused with copper, a natural conductor that helps move heat away from you. It disperses heat across the sleeping surface to reduce build-up, but also works to reduce pressure. Copper is also naturally antimicrobial. This layer also uses bands of PolarMAX phase-changing materials, which maintain a consistent temperature across the surface of the mattress, venting hot air away.
  • The 2nd Layer: The second layer of foam is a responsive aerated latex. Hundreds of small holes across this layer provide additional airflow, reducing higher temperatures that vent down from the first layer. This layer provides response and breathability, making it easier to move around on the surface of the mattress while it reduces temperature.
  • The 3rd Layer: A middle layer of 2” ecoLuxe cooling foam cushions your body, providing alignment and support across the entire surface of the mattress. This high-density memory foam alternative helps with pressure relief, especially when you sleep on your side.
  • The 4th Layer: Elastex, a latex alternative, acts as a transition layer in this mattress. It helps add to the response, ensuring that you are lifted out of this mattress instead of feeling stuck in the materials. This layer adds bounce and some motion isolation, too.
  • The 5th Layer: A final layer of support foam includes breathable air channels to vent off heat. This high-density support foam reduces motion transfer, dampening motion as it happens to keep couples asleep. It is zoned into five pressure-relief zones, which provide perfectly firm support throughout the mattress.

The Octave Horizon uses several layers of high-density and proprietary materials, adding features that you are less likely to find in an all-foam mattress. The result is a mattress that feels different because of the way it is constructed and the high-quality materials used. Because Octave has built on all of its other mattresses here, it creates an opportunity for them to get quality and performance perfect for this mattress.

Mattress Performance Test Results

We spend a lot of time evaluating mattresses, examining the most important features, and working to bring you accurate assessments of what each mattress offers. The following factors are weighed most heavily for us, as they are popular Canadian mattress features.

Temperature Control (9.4/10)

Mattresses with active cooling features reduce the build-up of heat in several unique ways. We look at the materials used within the mattress to determine how well it vents off heat. We also use heat mapping technology to determine the highest temperatures each mattress reaches and how quickly that heat is reduced. Hot sleepers need a mattress with a score of at least 8 out of 10 to be comfortable, with higher scores indicating much better cooling performance.

All-foam mattresses are known to retain heat, but the layers inside the Octave Horizon do a great job of keeping the heat away. Nearly every layer of this mattress uses cooling features, including aerated foams, gel and copper infusions, and a cover woven with cooling fibres. It also uses bands of phase-changing materials to reduce discomfort through the surface of the mattress. These features allow the Horizon to limit heat build-up and remove heat from your sleeping environment quickly. Even our hottest sleepers noted that they slept noticeably cooler on the Octave Horizon.

Motion Isolation (8.5/10)

We use several methods to test motion isolation. We use practical tests, which involve testers measuring how much motion they feel from a partner tester on the other side of the bed. We also use weighted ball drop tests and equipment that measures vibration and shaking on the other side of the bed. Using these two testing methods allows us to get a good picture of how the mattress responds with different stimuli. Anything above a 6/10 is essential for those who need uninterrupted sleep.

The Octave Horizon received a decent motion isolation score from us. Motion was nearly completely absorbed in our simulation tests, and our active testers said they could only feel a little motion from the other side of the bed. Still, this is an area that could show improvement for the mattress overall.

Edge Support (8.9/10)

If you sit on the edge of the bed in the morning, edge support may be important to you. Those who naturally sleep closer to the edge of the bed also need better edge support. Bolstered edges provide the same level of comfort and support from one edge of the mattress to the other. Those who prioritize this feature need at least a 5 out of 10 score to reduce significant sagging.

While the edge support on the Octave Horizon isn’t the worst we’ve seen, it could also improve. Our testers noted some sagging and discomfort at the side of the bed, but it usually wasn’t enough for the edges to become uncomfortable. Still, heavier sleepers might need a mattress with increased edge support to reduce any true discomfort here.

Firmness and Feel of the Octave Horizon Mattress

All of the mattresses we evaluate feature a firmness ranking. We use a 1 to 10 scale to determine and communicate firmness. We use the manufacturer’s ratings, but we also take into account our own experiences with the mattress. A mattress rated at 1 is extremely soft, while a mattress rating at 10 is extremely firm. When we discuss firmness, we look at the construction of the mattress, support, and pressure relief.

Firmness Chart 6.5
The Octave Horizon rates at about a 6.5 on our firmness scale.

The Octave Horizon is a Medium Firm mattress that rates a 6.5 in our firmness scale. This is an average firmness for an all-foam mattress, with enough support to keep you comfortable. Softer layers at the top of the mattress contour to your body and reduce pressure to keep you comfortable. The pressure relief here is good enough that even heavier sleepers can stay comfortable.

Though it doesn’t offer any strong support, there is enough support for alignment. Most sleeping positions need alignment to stay comfortable, so this is a bonus. Sinkage was moderate, but not bad enough to warrant any sort of support warning on our part.

Performance for Different Weights and Sleeping Preferences

Every mattress will not feel the same for every user. The Octave Horizon is going to feel different for you based on a number of factors, including your body type, sleeping preferences, and more. A firmness rating can clue you in on what the mattress will generally feel like, but these factors are why testing the mattress yourself is one of the most important things you can do before committing to a purchase. Thankfully, we also have testers of all body types to help you determine if a mattress will be right for you.

Weight Considerations

Your body type can directly impact how the materials in a mattress work for you. Thankfully, you won’t have to worry much with the Octave Horizon. This mattress is plush and supportive enough for lightweight sleepers (defined by the mattress industry as those weighing less than 130 pounds) as well as heavier sleepers (defined by the mattress industry as those weighing more than 230 pounds).

The Octave Horizon is thick enough to be comfortable for all, with enough pressure relief and support for the needs of multiple different sleeping preferences. Keep in mind that the mattress has a weight limit of 500 pounds, so the weight of both partners together should not exceed this for best results.

Sleeping Positions

Canadians need different levels of support due to how they sleep. Every sleeper may need different things to get comfortable, including pressure relief, support levels, and more. We tested the Octave Horizon with sleepers in all positions to bring you our best recommendations for each of them.

  • Side Sleepers: Side sleepers thrive with support and alignment through the middle of the mattress. Their biggest issues are pressure points and soreness from a sagging mattress that isn’t properly aligned. Due to this, a mattress with strong lumbar support, great pressure relief, and alignment that keeps their spine neutral is best. The Octave Horizon offers contouring and pressure relief, with some of the best pressure relief scores we’ve seen in a Canadian mattress. It is a little less notable when it comes to strong support, but the collapse points in the core of the mattress help with alignment.
  • Back Sleepers: Back sleepers require contouring and support from the middle of the mattress, too. They often require firmer support and a softer mattress, so they can sink in and feel supported without any major issues. The Octave Horizon may not be the perfect mattress for back sleepers, but it does offer some features that appeal to those who sleep in this position.
  • Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleepers often require some of the strongest support. Keeping their spine aligned and lifted out of the mattress is important for overall comfort. While the Octave Horizon has plenty of pressure relief for stomach sleepers, it might not offer the strong support that stomach sleepers need to stay comfortable.
  • Combo Sleepers: Combination sleepers must change positions often during the night, moving between any of the other sleeping positions to whatever feels most comfortable. Because of this, they need a mattress that is easy to move around on. Thankfully, the Horizon has a fast response time that allows the materials to reform after you’ve laid on them. This means your indents are filled in faster, giving you plenty of ease of movement throughout the surface of the mattress.

Delivery, Sleep Trials, & Returns

Octave is a Canadian-exclusive brand that ships from either Ontario or Alberta. Mattresses ship from your closest warehouse within 1 to 3 business days. If you live in most locations, your mattress will arrive between 2 and 5 days later. Your mattress will be shipped using FedEx Ground shipping right to your door. It’s free to most addresses, but there is a $250 delivery fee for delivery to the Canadian Territories.

When it arrives, your mattress will be tightly compressed into a tall, narrow box. The plastic wrapped around it allows it to be vacuum-sealed, so there is no air in contact with the mattress. When you receive it, you should move the box to the location where you intend to set it up. Placed the rolled-up mattress with plastic intact onto your bed’s foundation, then cut the plastic.

The mattress will immediately begin to expand to its intended size. It can take up to 48 hours for the mattress to reform. During this time, you shouldn’t use it. Once the Octave Horizon arrives at your door, your 365-night sleep trial starts. This gives you a full year to try the mattress for yourself. You’ll need to keep it for at least 21 days before initiating a return.

  • Shipping Cost: Free (except to Canadian Territories)
  • Time to Delivery: 3-8 Business Days
  • Courier: FedEx Ground
  • Sleep Trial Length: 365 Nights
  • Warranty: 15 Years
  • Ease of Return: Free pickup and full refund during sleep trial

Company Background

Octave is a Canadian company that is under the umbrella of Goodmorning.com. Octave ships all of its mattresses from Canadian factories and ships quickly from its local warehouses.

You can’t buy an Octave mattress in a physical store, but there are plenty of online options to choose from. Aside from its three mattresses, Octave offers bed frames, bedding, pillows, and more for Canadians to improve their sleep experience. These products help secured Octave’s good reputation for quality products.

Commitment to the Environment

Octave uses eco-conscious materials and a recycling model to keep mattresses out of landfills. Mattresses returned during the sleep trial period are recycled or donated to those in need. All of the materials used within the mattress are CertiPUR-US certified and made with materials that are a bit better for the environment than standard memory foam.

Elastex, for example, is made with fewer chemicals than standard latex. EcoLuxe foam uses 40% less carbon input than standard memory foam. Together, these materials help reduce the carbon footprint of each mattress and the company as a whole. Further, their offices and factories are partnered with Bullfrog Power, which provides renewable energy for commercial spaces.

Octave Horizon vs Other Octave Mattresses

A closer look at the Octave Vista mattress in our testing bedroom

The Octave Horizon is the top option in Octave’s mattress lineup. The two previous models still offer great performance, but they provide a great foundation for all that the Octave Horizon has in store. Here’s how those lower-tier mattresses stack up to the Horizon.

Horizon vs Vista Octave Mattresses

The Octave Vista is a bit firmer than the Horizon, mostly due to using fewer layers of foam. If you want a mattress that offers a bit more support at the cost of pressure relief, the Vista might be the best option for you.

One of the biggest differences here is the price point. The mattress is much thinner, which means the price point is significantly less. However, it still offers some good features for those who need a comfortable mattress for less. However, we recommend the Horizon if you have a little more to spend. It performs better in all categories, as it is the most improved version of this mattress.

Horizon vs Mirage Octave Mattresses

The Octave Mirage is the company’s midline mattress. It added aerated latex to the basic model offered in the Vista, making it more breathable and responsive. This also added some height to the mattress, which may make it better at reducing pressure.

The Octave Horizon only adds a single layer to this construction. That’s the layer of ecoLuxe cooling gel foam found in the middle of the mattress, which helps with deeper pressure points and dissipating heat from the middle of the mattress. The Horizon sleeps cooler and has better pressure relief than the Mirage, but it costs about $300 more for a Queen-sized Horizon.

Competing Canadian Mattress Comparisons

There are a host of great mattresses on the Canadian market, including premium all-foam models that push the boundaries of performance. Here, we’ll look at how it stacks up to the all-foam models from two popular Canadian companies, including Silk & Snow and Endy.

Octave Horizon vs Silk & Snow

Testing the performance of the Silk & Snow Mattress
Testing the performance of the Silk & Snow Mattress

The Silk & Snow Mattress is the only all-foam mattress that Silk & Snow offers, as both of the company’s other popular mattresses are hybrid models. Silk & Snow is an eco-conscious company with transparent manufacturing practices. They use high-density memory foam as well as a strong foam core to keep you comfortable and well-supported.

The cover of the Silk & Snow mattress is antimicrobial, but it doesn’t use the same cooling fibres as the Octave Horizon. Both are removable and washable, too. The Silk & Snow uses cooling gel foams, but it doesn’t use the phase-changing materials found at the top of the Horizon, either. This means that the S&S mattress doesn’t sleep as cool as the Horizon. The Horizon is also the clear winner when it comes to pressure relief and warranty length.

Octave Horizon vs Endy

Endy logo on the Endy mattress
Endy logo on the Endy mattress

The Endy is another all-foam mattress from a Canadian company. It offers strong support for your back and hips, contouring, and temperature-neutral foams. The original Endy is the only all-foam mattress the company offers, so we are comparing it to the Horizon even though it is less luxurious overall.

However, the Endy has an edge. It isolates motion a little better than the Octave Horizon, with performance scores that just barely eek about in front of the Horizon. On the other hand, Endy doesn’t include active cooling features. Some Canadians may not find that the price difference and boost in motion isolation makes up for the other areas where the Endy falls short.

Should You Buy an Octave Horizon Mattress?

The Octave Horizon is a good buy for those who want a more luxurious experience, but don’t want to go with a hybrid mattress. If you are looking for an all-foam mattress with great performance across all categories, this mattress can serve that need. It’s especially ideal for those who suffer from pressure points, or Canadians who move around a lot throughout the night.

The Octave Horizon can’t offer the same suite of features as a luxury hybrid mattress, but it does a great job for what it offers. It’s one of the best all-foam mattresses you can get for the money, with layers of eco-conscious and effective foams to reduce pressure and keep you comfortable.

Highlights of the Octave Horizon Mattress

The Octave Horizon is a high-performing, high-quality mattress that only lacks in a few areas. Still, it received passing scores in the areas where it could improve. That means that for the vast majority of sleepers, this mattress will be all that they need. The mattress offers an impressive level of pressure relief due to its thick design and comfortable materials.

Despite its all-foam design, the Octave Horizon offers some of the best temperature control we’ve seen. This mattress uses every layer to great effect, reducing heat at every level to keep heat away. The 365-night sleep trial is definitely one of the best features for this mattress, as it gives you plenty of time to see how it performs for you, including your sleeping position and body type.

Areas for Improvement

The Octave Horizon performs well in most areas, but there is still room for improvement. First, the support isn’t the best we’ve seen – that is, of course, part of the problem with an all-foam mattress. While this mattress received high scores in temperature control and responsiveness, it could offer better motion isolation overall.

The edge support here is also great, but could be improved. The edges still sink too much if you aren’t an ‘average’ weight sleeper, which eliminates a vast majority of the Canadians who might have liked to try this mattress. Still, these improvements are in relatively minor areas that don’t impact all Canadians.

Our Recommendations for the Octave Horizon Mattress

We recommend the Octave Horizon to all sleepers who need better pressure relief, especially for side sleepers. We recommend it to heavier sleepers especially, as the thick profile allows for increased comfort across the board. Side sleepers can enjoy the way this mattress feels. Hot sleepers, too, benefit from the variety of cooling materials used throughout this luxury mattress.
