How We Test Medium Firm Mattresses in Canada

Testing Dumbbells on the Douglas Mattress
Testing Dumbbells on the Douglas Alpine Mattress

Our Scoring Process for Medium Firm Mattresses

All of our mattresses receive performance scores out of 10. Each metric is scored based on information from our testing phases and our tester feedback from their time with the mattress. A higher score means the mattress will perform better in that area for the majority of sleepers.

Testing Medium Firm Mattresses

We test medium firm mattresses in Canada using the same methods we use for all of our mattresses. Our two-stage process includes initial practical tests using weights, sinkage measuring tools, and temperature maps. These tools give us an idea of how the mattress will perform in most circumstances. Then, our testers use the mattress for the duration of its sleep trial and give us information about their experiences. We use this data to help calculate our scores.

How We Chose These Medium Firm Mattresses

We chose the best medium firm mattresses in Canada based on the scores they received, how our testers reacted, and expert opinions on the mattresses from sleep experts.

“Douglas Alpine felt like a compromise, but we couldn’t have been more wrong. We wake up more rested than ever before.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Douglas Alpine)

Douglas Alpine Mattress Construction

  • Douglas CoolSense Cover. The Douglas CoolSense cover is removable and can be washed in your machine at home. Throw it in with your sheets when you are ready to refresh your bed.
  • 2.25” Luxury ecoLight Cooling Gel Foam with Polar Temperature Balancing. The top layer of foam is infused with gel for better cooling. This eco-conscious foam is also coated with PCM, or phase-changing material. This coating maintains a consistent temperature throughout the night, venting off any excess heat.
  • 2.25” Premium Elastex Foam. A transition layer of Elastex foam reduces motion transfer and keeps your deepest pressure points cushioned well. This layer is responsible for smoother movement on top of the mattress as well.
  • 6.5” Motion Isolation Support Foam. The core of the mattress is a dense layer of extremely supportive memory foam. This layer keeps your spine aligned and reduces strain due to excess sinkage.

Douglas Alpine Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.3/10

The cooling materials used in the Douglas Alpine are good at keeping you cool. These layers work together to reduce heat at the top of the mattress, preventing build-up so you don’t wake up sweating. The materials were slow to heat, and heat dissipated quickly for our testers.

Motion Isolation – 9.8/10

The latex-alternative foam and motion isolation base stop virtually all motion before it reaches the other side of the bed. If you often wake up when your partner tosses and turns, this mattress can help. Our tests revealed very little vibration reached the other side of the bed during even our most rigorous testing.

Pressure Relief – 9.3/10

Foam mattresses are usually great at pressure relief, and the same is true of the Douglas Alpine. It relieves pressure for most sleepers without allowing you to sink too far into the mattress. The result is never feeling stuck and completely avoiding the ‘quicksand’ feeling of some memory foam mattresses.

Ease of Movement – 9.2/10

The latex in the middle of the mattress is partially responsible for your ability to move around easily. This mattress doesn’t trap you in the indent you’ve left after several hours of sleep. The materials spring back quickly, so you can move around and get comfortable without worry.

Who is the Douglas Alpine For?

  • Couples and co-sleepers. Couples and cosleepers often have trouble with motion transfer, as a restless partner can keep you awake all night. Thankfully, the Douglas Alpine is great at restricting that motion, keeping you asleep even when your partner isn’t.
  • Side sleepers. Side sleepers need great pressure relief, and the Douglas Alpine delivers. This mattress relieves pressure expertly without allowing heavier sleepers to bottom out.
  • Canadians on a budget. The Douglas Alpine comes at an extremely reasonable price. At just $799 CAD for a Queen, you’ll get one of the best medium firm mattresses in Canada without breaking the bank.

Who Should Avoid the Douglas Alpine?

  • Those who want more feedback. The Douglas Alpine isolates most motion, including the bounce that some Canadians find essential.

Logan & Cove Pinnacle Mattress Construction

  • 1.5” Quilted Euro-Top Cover. Pinnacle’s top layer is its Euro-top. The cover is made with integrated cooling fibres, but underneath is a thick, plush section made with cooling gel foam and hollow fibre fill. This layer makes sleeping on this mattress cloud-like and comfortable.
  • 1” ecoLuxe Cooling Gel Foam. Under the Euro-top is a layer of ecoLuxe cooling foam. This gel-infused foam reduces sweating, keeping you cool by moving higher temperatures away from you as you sleep.
  • 1” Aeroduct Micro Coils. The first of three coil layers is right in the middle of the mattress. This layer of Aeroduct Micro Coils maintains even pressure relief, keeping your body aligned so you wake up without aches.
  • 1” Premium Elastex Foam. A transition layer of the latex-alternative Elastex cushions the different coil layers, creating a buffer that reduces pressure points and prevents bottoming out.
  • 1” Aeroduct Micro Coils. A second layer of Aeroduct coils facilitates better contouring and adds additional loft. This keeps your body lifted out of the dense support core.
  • 9” Pocketed Coils with Reinforced Edge Support. At the bottom of the mattress is a layer of dense, zoned pocket coils. They adjust to your body individually, and firmer coils through the center of the mattress help support your back and hips without strain.

Logan & Cove Pinnacle Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.2/10

The airy Euro-top section and cooling gel at the top of the mattress work to reduce heat build-up. Our heat mapping showed that heat didn’t build up as quickly as we expected it to, but the layers helped maintain a more consistent temperature throughout the night.

Motion Isolation – 6.4/10

Motion isolation is the one area where the Logan & Cove Pinnacle doesn’t stack up to other mattresses we’ve tried. That’s because of the three coil layers, which work together to facilitate greater movement from one side of the bed to the other. The result is a mattress that moves a little too much for lighter sleepers to stay asleep.

Pressure Relief – 9.1/10

Pressure relief is essential for side sleepers and those who wake up with uncomfortable pressure points. Thanks to the plush Euro-top cover, the Logan & Cove Pinnacle helps reduce pressure so you won’t wake up uncomfortable. While it doesn’t perform the best in this category, it will work wonderfully for most sleepers.

Ease of Movement – 9.0/10

Though the surface of the mattress is plush, it’s easy to move around if you have to turn over to get comfortable. This mattress doesn’t make you feel stuck, so it’s easy to get into the right position for better sleep.

Who is the Logan & Cove Pinnacle For?

  • Side and back sleepers. Side and back sleepers need pressure relief and balancing, which the Logan & Cove Pinnacle handles well.
  • Those who value edge support. The edges of this mattress stay firm when you sit at the edge of the bed, meaning you won’t slide off or sag there.
  • Canadians who need a plush mattress. The Euro-top section makes this mattress plush without losing support, which may appeal to some even if they prefer a medium firm mattress.

Who Should Avoid the Logan & Cove Pinnacle?

  • Light cosleepers. The Logan & Cove Pinnacle isn’t great at isolating motion. The three coil layers can’t help but move motion across to where you sleep, meaning you may wake up when your partner tosses and turns.

Three coil layers can’t stop motion from transferring to the other side of the mattress. The result is significantly worse motion isolation. If you need to stop motion transfer, consider all-foam options like the Douglas Alpine or Octave Vista.

Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Construction

Firm Version

  • GOTS Certified Organic Cotton Cover. The cover of the Silk & Snow Organic is a smooth, certified organic cotton that is breathable and works perfectly with any sheet set.
  • GOTS Certified Organic Wool Quilt Layer. Wool is naturally fire retardant, so this layer helps the rest of the mattress avoid using chemicals to meet safety standards. Wool is also great for pressure relief and cooling.
  • 0.8” GOLS Certified Latex Layer. A thin layer of organic Dunlop latex relieves pressure and makes it easy to move around on the top of the mattress.
  • Zoned Pocket Coil Base. The firm base of the mattress uses zoned pocket coils to reduce discomfort. This layer keeps your body balanced and eliminates strain, with firmer coils in the middle of the mattress to support your hips and back.
  • Firm Edge Support. A perimeter of firmer coils keeps the edges firm, so they don’t sag or sink down if you sleep closer to the edge.

  • 0.8” GOLS Certified Latex. Same as the Firm Version.
  • 3.5” GOLS Certified Latex Layer. In the Plush version of the Silk & Snow Organic mattress, the transitional pressure-relief layer is over twice as thick as the Medium Firm. The result is zero pressure points and strong responsiveness.
  • Zoned Pocket Coil Base. Same as the Firm Version.
  • Firm Edge Support. Same as the Firm Version.

Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.1/10

The Silk & Snow Organic uses organic latex and wool to create a cooler sleep surface. While none of the layers use active cooling features, wool and latex don’t retain heat like standard memory foam. The result is a mattress that heats up slowly and deals with heat quickly.

Motion Isolation – 7.2/10

One of the only areas where we wish the Silk & Snow Organic performed better was motion isolation. The coils facilitate a lot of movement between the sides of the bed. During our drop tests, motion was easily tracked on the opposite end of the bed. Testers had a similar experience during their time with the mattress.

Pressure Relief – 8.9/10

Pressure relief will change for the Silk & Snow Organic based on the firmness option you choose. The Plush version offers better pressure relief, but we used the Medium Firm version for our testing. It still relieved pressure extremely well, keeping pressure points at bay for most Canadians.

Ease of Movement – 9.4/10

The latex materials make the mattress responsive and easy to move around on. Unlike memory foam, which may make you feel ‘stuck’, the latex and coils within this mattress give you free range of motion without feeling restricted.

Who is the Silk & Snow Organic For?

  • Those who know their sleep preferences. If you know what type of mattress you prefer, you can choose the firmness option that works best for you.
  • Eco-conscious Canadians. Fully organic materials make this mattress a great optionf or those who are conscious of environmental impact.
  • Those who sleep warm. Though this mattress doesn’t have active cooling features, it provides great temperature control because its materials don’t hold onto heat like others might.

Who Should Avoid the Silk & Snow Organic?

  • Couples sensitive to motion. If you need a mattress that stops motion as it happens, this might not be the best option for you. There’s a lot of movement that can transfer from one

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Octave Vista)

Octave Vista Mattress Construction

  • CyroFusion Cooling Nanofibre Cover. The Octave Vista uses a CryoFusion Cooling Nanofibre Cover to reduce heat. This proprietary fabric wicks away heat and moisture to maintain a consistent temperature.
  • 2” CopperGel Memory Foam + PolarMAX. The top layer of the Octave Vista features copper-infused memory foam. This foam is naturally conductive and antimicrobial, so it draws away excess heat and keeps your bed fresh. Meanwhile, the PolarMAX phase-changing materials maintains a consistently cool temperature throughout the night.
  • 2” Premium Elastex Foam. A transition layer of Elastex promotes better ease of movement on top fo the mattress, as well as cushioning deep pressure points to keep you more comfortable and well-balanced.
  • 8” Multi-Zone Support Foam with Air Channels. The true balance and support comes from the core of the mattress. At the bottom, you’ll find an 8” layer of supportive memory foam complete with air channels to help vent away heat in the middle of the mattress.

Octave Vista Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 8.2/10

Because of the materials used, we expected this mattress to be a little cooler. While it does fine for those who don’t usually overheat, Canadians who sleep hot may want a mattress that has better temperature control than this one.

Motion Isolation – 8.5/10

If motion isolation isn’t a big deal for you, this mattress will be great. It performs better than the hybrid options on our list, as well as some of the other mattresses we’ve tried. While it doesn’t stop all motion, it reduces vibrations from the other side of the bed.

Pressure Relief – 8.3/10

The comfort layers of this mattress are a little thinner than we’d need to see for real pressure relief. Our heavier testers bottomed out after all night on this mattress, but most were perfectly fine with the level of pressure relief found here.

Ease of Movement – 9.2/10

Sometimes, you need to move around to get comfortable. Some all-foam mattresses can have you feeling stuck and unable to move out of the mattress. However, that isn’t the case with the Octave Vista. Most Canadians can move around without any issues, making it easy to find a comfortable spot.

Who is the Octave Vista For?

  • Canadians on a budget. If you want a mattress that meets your needs and won’t break the bank, the Octave Vista is a great choice for you.
  • Edge sleepers. Canadians who sleep near the edge of the bed can get the same support as those who sleep near the middle thanks to the strong edges in the Octave Vista.
  • Those who move around a lot at night. Because it’s easy to move around on the Octave Vista, it’s ideal for those who often move around to get comfortable at night.

Who Should Avoid the Octave Vista?

  • Those who sleep hot. The cooling properties of this mattress aren’t bad, but they also aren’t the best we’ve seen. If you regularly wake up hot and uncomfortable, consider skipping this mattress.

Best for Couples – Endy

Endy logo on the Endy mattress
Endy logo on the Endy mattress
Best for Couples
The Endy mattress offers some of the best motion isolation on the Canadian market, with an all-foam touch that keeps you perfectly still throughout the night.
  • Temperature Control: 9.3/10
  • Motion Isolation: 9.6/10
  • Edge Support: 9.7/10
  • Pressure Relief: 8.1/10
  • Bounce: 9.9/10
  • Eco: 8/10
  • Response: 10/10
  • Ease of Movement: 10/10
  • Policies: 8/10

Highlights

  • Great temperature control
  • Three firmness levels for sleepers in all positions
  • Great motion isolation and ease of movement, which is difficult to achieve in a foam mattress

“I used to wake up whenever my husband turned over, but the Endy mattress has let me sleep without any disturbance for months now.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Endy Mattress)

Endy Mattress Construction

  • Micro Quilted Cover. The cover of the Endy mattress is made of a soft, smooth material. It’s quilted for extra beauty and breathability, but it isn’t delicate. You can remove it and wash it at home, and it stretches back over the foam layers effortlessly.
  • Endy Comfort Foam. The top layer is made with Endy Comfort Foam, an open-cell foam that reduces motion and improves breathability. This foam is also infused with gel cooling foam to further reduce discomfort.
  • Transition Foam. A middle layer of transition foam keeps painful pressure points at bay. This layer also reduces motion, keeping you comfortable throughout the night, no matter how you sleep.
  • Support Foam. A final layer of dense support foam balances your body to remove strain. When your spine is in perfect alignment, you can wake without discomfort.

Endy offers three firmness levels for their all-foam mattress: Firm, Medium, and Plush. All of these options use the same construction, but the layers vary in thickness to create a different feel. Because of this, we’ve chosen to explain the basic construction here. Note that we used the Medium version of the mattress for our tests.

Testing the sinkage and support of the Endy mattress
Testing the sinkage and support of the Endy mattress

Endy Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.3/10

Endy’s open-cell cooling foam excels at taking heat out of the mattress. This layer alone provides most of the temperature control for the mattress. Heat didn’t build up as quickly as with other mattresses, and any excess heat was quick to dissipate thanks to the breathable nature of the foam.

Motion Isolation – 9.6/10

Endy is known for its motion isolation, and our testing confirmed that this mattress is great for couples. There was minimal transfer from the other side of the mattress, so you’ll stay asleep even when your partner tosses and turns.

Pressure Relief – 8.1/10

The thinner comfort layers on most versions of this mattress mean it doesn’t relieve pressure as well as other options on our list. While it does fine for most sleepers, heavier sleepers and side sleepers may have issues with the way this mattress feels.

Ease of Movement – 10/10

The low sinkage of the Endy mattress means you don’t ever feel like you are too deep into the mattress to turn over. It’s easy to move around on the surface and change position without feeling like you are fighting against the materials.

Who is the Endy For?

  • Those who sleep hot. Despite having few cooling features, the Endy is great at reducing heat for most Canadians.
  • Canadians who move around a lot. If you often have to change position at night, you may have issues with memory foam mattresses. The Endy doesn’t have the same issues due to the composition of its foam layers.
  • Couples. Endy performed really well for us in our motion isolation tests, receiving a higher score than most all-foam mattresses can achieve.

Who Should Avoid the Endy?

  • Those who need pressure relief. Minimal sinkage on the Endy mattress keeps you lifted out of the core of the mattress, but the pressure relief isn’t the greatest for those who need a little extra comfort.
