  • Better ease of movement for restless sleepers

The Douglas Original Mattress is our editor’s pick for the best bed in a box mattress in Canada. We think it displays the performance and quality most Canadians look for. This all-foam mattress performs well in most categories, with only a few minor drawbacks that might work against it. The all-foam construction feels different from any other all-foam mattress on the Canadian market, making it a standout bed in a box in Canada.

Douglas Original Mattress Construction

Closeup of the Douglas Original Layers
A closer look at the layers used within the Douglas Original Mattress
  1. CoolSense Cover. Made with Infinitex cooling fibres, this cover is breathable and cool. It’s removable and washable as well, so you can keep your bed fresh.
  2. 2” ecoLight Cooling Gel Foam. This top layer is extremely durable. The ecoLight foam is infused with gel for additional cooling. It’s also made with 40% less carbon input than standard memory foam, so it is an eco-conscious option.
  3. 2” Premium Elastex Foam. Elastex is a latex alternative that retains the properties of natural latex without the chemicals. This layer is responsive, but it also cushions your deepest pressure points for a restful sleep.
  4. 6” Motion Isolation Support Foam. The base of the Douglas mattress helps isolate motion and keeps you aligned.

Douglas Original Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.3/10

Cooling is incredibly important for most Canadians, but it is especially important in all-foam mattresses. The Douglas Original tries to eliminate all common issues with memory foam mattresses, including overheating. We found that this mattress slept much cooler than expected. After an hour of laying on it, the temperature had increased just a few degrees across the surface of the mattress. This is likely due to the gel cooling foam at the top of the mattress, the CoolSense cover, and the Elastex transition layer. Together, these layers helped remove heat so our testers slept cooler than on other all-foam options.

Motion Isolation – 9.8/10

Couples, those who sleep with pets, and those with restless partners may value motion isolation above all other performance features. We tested the Douglas Original by dropping weights on one side of the mattress and measuring the vibration on the other side. Mostly due to the foam design of this mattress, it has one of the best motion isolation scores we’ve seen. There is minimal transfer to the other side of the mattress, meaning you won’t feel much when your partner tosses and turns.

Pressure Relief – 9.3/10

Pressure relief is key for most sleepers, as pressure points can develop where your body presses into the mattress. We tested the Douglas Original with side sleepers of all sizes over extended periods to see if pressure would build up and become uncomfortable. We’re happy to report that the Douglas Original offers great pressure relief. Even our heaviest testers were comfortable after extended use.

Ease of Movement – 9.2/10

If you’ve ever felt stuck in your mattress while trying to turn over, you know how uncomfortable it can be. We measured a quicker-than-average material response time when we tested the Douglas Original. The material reformed quickly after we moved away, making it ideal for those who move around often. We didn’t get the same ‘quicksand’ feeling that plagues many memory foam mattresses.

Who is the Douglas Original Mattress For?

  • Side and back sleepers. This mattress’s pressure relief and strong alignment make it a great choice for those who sleep on their back or side.
  • Canadians on a budget. If you want quality without breaking the bank, the Douglas Original is the mattress for you. A queen is just $799, even with its proprietary foam layers.
  • Hot sleepers. Despite the all-foam design, this mattress does a great job with temperature control. We found only a slight increase over our testing time, meaning the materials isolate heat better than others on our list.
  • Couples. The layers here provide strong motion isolation. Canadians who often wake up when their partner moves around can sleep soundly on this mattress.

Who Should Avoid the Douglas Original Mattress?

  • Canadians who need extreme support. At the end of the day, the Douglas Original is the only mattress on our list that uses a foam support base. While this makes it great for some users, those who need additional support should look for a hybrid option instead.

Alternative Option

The Douglas Original Mattress is an all-foam mattress. Many Canadians may need stronger support, especially if they regularly experience back pain. The Logan & Cove Choice is a good alternative for those who value zoned support. It offers the same level of pressure relief as the Douglas because it uses many of the same materials, but also features a zoned pocket coil layer for additional lumbar support.

Best Affordable Hybrid – Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress

  • Temperature Control: 8.9/10
  • Motion Isolation: 9.2/10
  • Edge Support: 9.7/10

  • Eco: 9.0/10
  • Response: 9.3/10
  • Ease of Movement: 9.4/10
  • Policies: 8.7/10

Highlights

  • Most affordable hybrid mattress in Canada
  • Better edge support than some hybrid mattresses
  • Great pressure relief for side sleepers

The Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress offers great value for your money, especially when it comes to a hybrid mattress. It’s one of the most affordable options on our list, but it still uses high-quality materials. These include high-density comfort foams. As with all Silk & Snow Mattresses, the materials are transparently sourced. You always know where every part of your mattress comes from, and this one is entirely made in Canada.

Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress Construction

Medium-Firm Version

  • Antimicrobial Cover. The cover of the Silk & Snow Hybrid is made with antimicrobial fabric. It’s a special type of polyester that prevents the growth of bacteria. This means no more odours, which is especially important because the cover can’t be removed.
  • 1” Quilted Cooling Foam and Fill. This cooling foam and hollow fibre fill are quilted directly into the cover. This makes the sleeping surface cool and cloud-like.
  • 2” High Density Gel Memory Foam. A transition layer of high-density memory foam cushions your joints, providing perfect alignment and deep relief for your pressure points.
  • 9” Zoned Pocket Coil Base. The pocket coil base uses up to 1,200 double-tempered springs. They compress individually to reduce motion transfer but are also zoned for better lumbar support.
  • Edge Support Perimeter. A foam perimeter surrounds the pocket coils. This dense foam lifts the edges of the mattress, preventing it from sagging when you sit on the edge.

Plush Version

  • Antimicrobial Cover. Like the Firm version of the mattress, the Plush version features an antimicrobial cover that works to reduce and restrict the growth of bacteria.
  • Cooling Fabric. A layer of cooling fabric is infused to the cover, which increases temperature control and makes the mattress cooler throughout the surface. This is great for hotter sleepers.
  • Quilted Layer. A layer of quilted memory foam makes a thin layer on the surface of the mattress, which makes it easier on your joints and reduces some pressure.
  • Deep Pressure Relief. A 2″ layer of high-density foam int he middle of the mattress offers deeper pressure point relief, better balancing, and a more comfortable sleep.
  • Transition Layer. 2″ of high-density polyfoam gives you extra cushion, reducing discomfort so you can sleep better.
  • 8″ Zoned Pocket Coil Base. The base of the mattress uses 8″ pocket coils. These coils are zoned, with firmer coils through the centre of the mattress to support your hips and lower back.
  • Edge Support Perimeter. Edge support is important for some Canadians, particularly those who sit or sleep near the edge of the bed. This mattress features a perimeter of firm edge support foam to keep you comfortable.

Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress Performance Scores

Sleeping on the Silk & Snow Hybrid
Testing out the performance on the Silk & Snow Hybrid mattress

Temperature Control – 8.9/10

The Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress generates a little heat, but the cooling measures do a good job of dispelling some of it. We measured heat over several hours lying on the mattress. The results were good, but they could be better. Those who sleep extremely hot should look for a cooler mattress.

Motion Isolation – 9.2/10

Even though this mattress is a hybrid, it has great motion isolation. Usually, the pocket coils carry some motion through the mattress. Here, it’s minimal. Our weight drop tests found minimal vibration on the other side of the mattress. Through manual testing with partners, larger movements were felt but not disruptive.

Pressure Relief- 8.6/10

We measured pressure relief by polling our team of testers over time. Throughout long periods of use, most testers reported that the pressure relief was great for them. Heavier testers had some issues with pressure after laying on their sides for several hours, so heavier side sleepers may need a mattress with a little more pressure relief.

Ease of Movement – 9.4/10

The response time from the materials in this mattress is faster than average. The foams reform quickly when you turn over or move. In our tests, we observed better ease of movement than a lot of mattresses offer. Testers of all body types were able to move around without feeling stuck.

Who is the Silk & Snow Hybrid For?

  • Canadians with back pain. The zoned pocket coils are firmer in the centre for lumbar support. Those with back pain can enjoy better alignment and support from this layer.
  • Edge Sleepers. The edge support scores for this mattress were outstanding. If you tend to move toward the edge as you sleep, you’ll have great support there.
  • Those who need bounce. You’ll find that this mattress is sufficiently bouncy for those who need it.

Who Should Avoid the Silk & Snow Hybrid?

  • Hot sleepers. If you often overheat while you sleep, the Silk & Snow Hybrid isn’t the best option for you. While it does have some cooling features, those who need extreme relief won’t find it here.

The Silk & Snow Hybrid doesn’t offer great cooling. While it might be good for some Canadians, it could turn others away. If you need better temperature control, consider the Emma Hybrid Premium Plus. Like the Silk & Snow Hybrid, it’s a pocket coil mattress with great pressure relief. However, the specialty foams do a bit more for hot sleepers.

Best Zoned Support – Logan & Cove Choice

  • Temperature Control: 9.4/10
  • Motion Isolation: 6.2/10
  • Edge Support: 9.7/10

  • Bounce: 9.8/10

  • Policies: 9.5/10

Highlights

  • Great bounce and ease of movement make this mattress comfortable without the quicksand feeling
  • A long sleep trial period gives you plenty of time to try it
  • Above-average cooling and pressure relief

The Logan & Cove Choice is the best bed in a box mattress in Canada for zoned support. The 9” pocket coil layer uses up to 1,200 coils, all of which compress individually for pressure relief and support. Overall, this mattress features outstanding alignment and great edge support, as well as a lightning-fast response time. Moving around on top of this mattress is extremely easy.

  • Quilted Cover. The cover itself is made with CryoFusion nanofibres, which wick away sweat and moisture. Quilted into the cover is a layer of cooling gel foam, as well as a buffer layer of breathable hollow fibre fill. Together, these materials make for a breathable top.
  • 1” ecoLuxe Cooling Foam. This cooling gel foam is made with less carbon input than standard memory foam. It relieves pressure while reducing head build-up throughout the night.
  • 1.5” Premium Elastex. A transitional layer of Elastex, a latex alternative, maintains responsivity. This layer also contours the mattress to your body for pressure relief and support.
  • 9” Pocket Coil Layer. Zoned pocket coils make up the bulk of this mattress. The coils are arranged in 5 ergonomic comfort zones, which help keep support consistent with the needs of your body.

Logan & Cove Choice Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.4/10

Memory foam mattresses are prone to overheating, which is probably why the Logan & Cove Choice performs so well when it comes to cooling. It has no standard memory foam, so heat doesn’t get a chance to build up. We found that the temperature of the mattress did not significantly increase throughout the night. Even our testers who usually slept hot reported no issues after several hours of use.

Motion Isolation – 6.2/10

Motion isolation is the one area where the Logan & Cove Choice didn’t perform as well. During our testing, we found that significant motion was felt on the other side of the bed during weight drop tests. During our practical tests with partner testers, larger movements were disruptive. If you sleep light, this might not be the best mattress for you.

Pressure Relief- 8.9/10

Pressure relief is extremely important for side sleepers, but most sleepers need pressure relief to stay comfortable. The comfort layers within the Logan & Cove Choice are relatively thin, but they still offers great pressure relief. Our practical tests returned great results, even for our heaviest testers.

Ease of Movement – 10/10

This mattress is extremely easy to move around on. It gets one of the best scores on the Canadian mattress market because of the quick material times. We observed no significant difficulties with turning or moving around during multiple rounds of testing.

Who is the Logan & Cove Choice For?

  • Hot sleepers. The cooling features within this mattress work to reduce temperature build-up throughout the night. Even the hottest sleepers will be more comfortable.
  • Canadians who move around a lot. It’s easy to move around on this mattress. The materials react extremely quickly, so you won’t have trouble getting comfortable.
  • Side and stomach sleepers. With great pressure relief and a plush top with strong support, this mattress is great for both side and stomach sleepers.

Who Should Avoid the Logan & Cove Choice?

  • Couples with restless partners. Motion isolation is the one area where this mattress doesn’t perform well. If you are a light sleeper or have a restless partner, this mattress might not be the one for you.

When it comes to luxury, it doesn’t get much better than the Emma Hybrid Premium Plus. The cost is higher than most mattresses on our list, but you get a lot of value for your money.

Emma Hybrid Premium Plus Mattress Construction

  • Ultra-Dry Cover. This add-on cover is soft and comfortable. It’s extremely breathable, leading to a cooler sleep surface. It’s also removable and machine washable.
  • 0.75” Thermosync Foam. The first layer of foam is infused with graphite. It naturally conducts heat away from you, reducing your body temperature overall.
  • 0.5” AirgoCell Foam. Point Elastic Airgocell removes extreme body heat from the mattress. It also wicks away moisture to maintain freshness.
  • 0.5” MemoryAdapt Foam. A layer of memory foam contours to your body, providing the right level of pressure relief for you.
  • 0.75” HRX Foam. HRX foam keeps you level, with ideal weight balancing and the perfect firmness for your body type and sleeping position.
  • 8” Pocket Coil Layer. These pocket coils are arranged in 7 ergonomic zones for edge-to-edge support, with no drop-off near the edge. Plus, they provide a pleasant amount of bounce.
  • 3.5” Support Foam. A stabilizing layer of polyfoam helps the mattress retain its shape and resist sinking over time.

Emma Hybrid Premium Plus Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.2/10

The Emma Hybrid Premium Plus has a lot of things working for it in the cooling department. The thick pocket coil layer adds better breathability throughout the mattress. The proprietary foam layers also prevent the build-up of heat. Some of these layers are open-cell foam, which provides top-notch cooling. We found that heat dissipated well, and there was little change in the core temperature of the mattress after hours of use.

Motion Isolation – 10/10

For a hybrid mattress, the Emma Hybrid Premium Plus isolates motion extremely well. Usually, pocketed coils transfer a small amount of motion. Here, the comfort layers do a lot to stop motion in its tracks. Our weight drop tests and practical tests showed almost no motion transfer across the mattress.

Pressure Relief – 8.7/10

The comfort layers inside the mattress are thinner than we usually see. While the layers are good at relieving pressure, they may not be enough for heavier Canadians. However, the materials did perform well for average sleepers, as they did a good job of keeping our testers from sinking too far into the mattress.

Ease of Movement – 9.6/10

This mattress features a remarkably quick response time. We observed that the foam reformed nearly immediately once pressure was released, which made it easier for us to move around during our tests. After longer periods, the foam still regained its shape quickly.

Who is the Emma Hybrid Premium Plus For?

  • Couples. This mattress isolates motion better than most other options on our list, so couples can sleep peacefully.
  • Warm sleepers. The temperature control in this mattress isn’t the best we’ve seen, but it will keep most sleepers cool throughout the night.
  • Those who move around a lot. A combination of material response time, motion isolation, and sinkage results make this mattress perfect for those who toss and turn.

Who Should Avoid the Emma Hybrid Premium Plus?

  • Canadians who prefer to sink in. This mattress offers minimal sinkage, which may not be enough for some users. If you like to sink into the mattress for that comforting memory foam ‘hug’, you should probably look elsewhere.

Best All Foam – Octave Horizon

The Octave Horizon mattress ready for testing
  • Temperature Control: 9.4/10
  • Motion Isolation: 8.5/10
  • Edge Support: 8.9/10
  • Pressure Relief: 9.8/10
  • Bounce: 7.8/10
  • Eco: 9.0/10
  • Response: 9.8/10
  • Ease of Movement: 9.5/10
  • Policies: 10/10

Highlights

  • Quick response time leads to much better ease of movement
  • Phase-changing materials lead the charge against heat, so hot sleepers can rest comfortably
  • Thick comfort layers give the mattress a plush but supportive feel

When it comes to all foam mattresses, there is no shortage of options on the Canadian market. The Octave Horizon manages to pull ahead of the pack by using phase-changing materials, proprietary foams, and a construction that prioritizes comfort. It eliminates heat build-up and the quicksand feeling that usually comes with foam mattresses.

Octave Horizon Mattress Construction

Testing the responsiveness of the layers inside the Octave Horizon
Testing the responsiveness of the layers inside the Octave Horizon
  • CryoFusion Cooling Cover. The unique Octave cover uses cooling nanofibres to reduce heat. These CryoFusion fibres wick away heat, and moisture, and keep temperatures at a manageable level.
  • 2.5” CopperGel Memory Foam. The first layer of foam is infused with copper. It also includes bands of phase-changing through the centre of the mattress, which can reduce heat build-up for the hottest sleepers.
  • 1.5” Aerated Latex. This breathable latex layer is likely responsible for much of the Octave Horizon’s performance. The small perforations push air through the core of the mattress, while the latex remains responsive.
  • 2” ecoLuxe Cooling Foam. ecoLuxe cooling foam is a proprietary gel cooling foam that uses less carbon than standard memory foam. This layer reduces heat and cradles your deepest pressure points, ensuring that you won’t feel the firmer support core.
  • 2” Elastex Foam. Elastex is an extremely responsive latex alternative. This layer allows you to move around without becoming stuck in the mattress.
  • 6” Support Foam. The high-density support foam base uses air channels for better airflow, with pressure relief zones to facilitate better weight distribution and body alignment.

Octave Horizon Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.4/10

The Octave Horizon uses multiple layers of cooling foam, including incredibly effective phase-changing material. This mattress does a great job of removing heat from your sleep environment. Through tests over longer periods, the mattress was consistently cooler than the competition. Our testers who sleep extremely hot could tell a difference immediately.

Motion Isolation – 8.5/10

All-foam mattresses are usually great at isolating motion. In all of our tests, the Octave Horizon performed about average when it came to motion isolation. It performed marginally better in our practical tests, but the scores were just average. Still, if your partner isn’t often restless or you sleep deeply, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Pressure Relief- 9.8/10

Where the Octave Horizon shines is with pressure relief. The comfort layers within this mattress are a full 8” thick, which is much thicker than some of the other mattresses on our list. Testers of all different body types and sleeping positions reported no pressure points even after hours of use. We could also see that they didn’t sink too far into the mattress; just enough to cradle them without being able to feel the support layers.

Ease of Movement – 9.5/10

Though the comfort layers inside the Octave Horizon are dense, they are more responsive than you might expect. This mattress has one of the fastest response times in Canada. Our testers reported that it was extremely easy to move around, and our observations revealed that the foam regained its shape almost instantly.

Who is the Octave Horizon For?

  • Hot sleepers. The phase-changing materials, gel cooling foam, and aerated latex work together to reduce heat throughout the mattress.
  • Eco-conscious Canadians. This mattress uses eco-conscious specialty foam layers. Most are made with less carbon or fewer chemicals than their standard counterparts.
  • Those who need pressure relief. The Octave Horizon’s comfort layers are thick and comfortable. It helps relieve uncomfortable pressure points, even for the heaviest sleepers.

Who Should Avoid the Octave Horizon?

  • Canadians who want bounce. The Octave Horizon doesn’t perform well when it comes to movement. Those who need more feedback from their mattress should choose a different option.

The Endy Hybrid is one of the best bed in a box mattress in Canada for material response and bounce. Those who move around a lot will appreciate how easy it is to change position, regardless of your body type. However, this ease of movement comes with a cost. You will experience higher levels of motion transfer as a result, so this mattress may not work well for couples.

Endy Hybrid Mattress Construction

  • Quilted Cover. Endy’s plush cover is lined with foam and quilted for a luxurious touch.
  • Endy Comfort Foam. The top layer of Endy Comfort Foam provides extreme material response and open-cell breathability.
  • Polyfoam Transition Layer. A layer of transition foam cradles deep pressure points. Heavier sleepers may find that this layer helps keep them comfortable.
  • Pocket Coil Support Base. The supportive core of the Endy Hybrid Mattress features stronger edge support, firmer coils for your hips and back, and softer coils for your shoulders.
  • Stabilizing Support Foam. A thin layer of dense foam under the coils helps the mattress keep its shape. It won’t sag over time because this layer keeps the coils in line.

Endy Hybrid Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.3

The Endy Hybrid mattress doesn’t use any temperature control measures. The open-cell top layer helps the mattress breathe, while the pocket coils provide better airflow to the centre of the mattress. Regardless, these materials provide a cooler experience for those who sleep warm. In our tests, the mattress heated slightly but did not get much warmer over time.

Motion Isolation – 6.4/10

The original Endy mattress is known for its motion isolation, but this is mostly due to the all-foam construction. The Endy Hybrid is at a significant disadvantage because of its coil layer. During our drop and practical tests, we noticed significant amounts of motion transfer for all movements, not just the big ones.

Pressure Relief- 9.3/10

The comfort layers are a bit thin, but most Canadians won’t even notice. Endy’s proprietary Comfort Foam cradles your body, relieving pressure with just enough sinkage to be comfortable. Our heavier testers were a little less comfortable, but the Endy Hybrid still kept uncomfortable pressure points at bay.

Ease of Movement – 9.7/10

Since the materials inside the Endy Hybrid respond so quickly, you can easily move around on the surface. While you can sink into the mattress comfortably, you can turn over and change positions easily. During our tests, we witnessed some of the fastest response times from the Endy Comfort foam layer, which reformed almost immediately.

Who is the Endy Hybrid For?

  • Combination Sleepers. The material response time on the Endy Hybrid is outstanding. Those who move around a lot, such as combination sleepers, can do so effortlessly.
  • Canadians with back pain. The zoned lumbar support and contouring coil layers give excellent lumbar support. Those with back pain can find the alignment they need to sleep more peacefully.
  • Those on a budget. For a hybrid mattress, the Endy Hybrid is a great value. It comes at an affordable price for most budgets.

Who Should Avoid the Endy Hybrid?

  • Light sleepers. If you often wake up to motion, the Endy Hybrid may not be for you. The minimal motion isolation means that those who sleep light may be disturbed often.
