How We Score Pocket Coil Mattresses

We give each mattress a score based on its performance. These scores range from 0 to 10, with 10 being the best it could possibly be. These scores are averaged from our test results and tester feedback. These sets of data give us a good idea of how the mattress will perform, and averaging them is the best way for us to determine how it might work for you.

Which Tests We Use for Pocket Coil Mattresses

We test pocket coil mattresses using a series of practical and simulation tests. We use ball drops, heat maps, and machines that measure vibrations to simulate mattress performance across a variety of situations. Then, we use testers for most practical testing data.

Our Selection Process for Pocket Coil Mattresses

We select mattresses for our lists using an elimination process. First, we list all of the pocket coil mattresses in Canada. Then, we compare scores, look at each mattress’s construction, and try to figure out what each mattress does well. From there, we choose options that we feel will work best for most Canadians.

Firm Version

  • Antimicrobial Cover. The cover is made of an antimicrobial fibre. This cover helps keep your bed fresh by reducing odours and preventing bacterial growth.
  • Quilted Layer. The top layer of foam is quilted right into the cover. This layer helps provide a better cushion when you first lie down.
  • Transition Foam. A 1” layer of foam creates deeper pressure relief. It keeps you lifted out of the coils and perfectly balanced to reduce strain.
  • Zoned Pocket Coils with Reinforced Edge. The Firm version of the mattress features a 9” pocket coil base, which contains up to 1,200 pocket coils. These coils provide strong support, with a zoned section in the centre for firmer support.

Medium Firm Version

  • Antimicrobial Cover. Same as Firm.
  • Quilted Layer. Same as Firm.
  • Cooling Foam. The middle transition layer in the Medium Firm version of the mattress is a thick cooling foam. This layer uses 2” of cooling-gel infused memory foam with a high-density construction that provides pressure relief and temperature reduction.
  • Zoned Pocket Coils with Reinforced Edge. Same as Firm.

Plush Version

  • Antimicrobial Cover. Same as Firm.
  • Cooling Fabric. The Plush version of the mattress has an additional layer quilted to the top. This layer of cooling fabric reduced heat at the surface. It draws moisture and excessive temperatures away from you.
  • Quilted Layer. Same as Firm.
  • Pressure Relief Foam. The Plush mattress features 2” of high-density memory foam. This layer provides intense pressure relief and helps you fall asleep quickly.
  • Transition Foam. The transition layer in the Plush version is 2” high. It helps cushion the coil layers below, easing your body into the stronger support of the layers below.
  • 8” Pocket Coil Layer with Reinforced Edge. The zoned pocket coil layer on the Plush version is just 8” tall. It does just as well for support as the thicker base in the other versions, but the slightly lower profile leaves more room for comfort layers.

Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 8.9/10

The Silk & Snow Hybrid does a good job of reducing temperatures at the surface of the mattress. Some versions use cooling gel foam layers to create a cooler surface, while others rely on the coils pushing cooler air through the materials. While this mattress may not be the best option for extremely hot sleepers, it isolates heat well enough for those who only occasionally wake up with night sweats.

Motion Isolation – 9.2/10

Hybrid mattresses don’t usually isolate motion well, which is why the motion isolation score for the Silk & Snow Hybrid surprised us. This mattress does a great job of staying still when your partner is tossing and turning. You’re less likely to feel any motion from the other side of the bed, so you’ll stay peacefully asleep even on restless nights.

Pressure Relief – 8.6/10

The pressure relief of this mattress is one of the areas where it could perform better. Most of our average testers noted that it felt okay for the most part, but heavier testers had some issues with pressure relief as they slept. Keep in mind that the Plush version of the mattress will probably offer better pressure relief than firmer options, so consider this while making your purchase.

Ease of Movement – 9.4/10

The layers of high-density foam and responsive coils make moving around on the Silk & Snow Hybrid easy. If you have to move around a lot to get comfortable, this mattress won’t make you feel stuck.

Sleeping on the Silk & Snow Hybrid
Sleeping on the Silk & Snow Hybrid

Who is the Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress For?

  • Warm sleepers. If you sleep a little warmer than you’d like, the layers of cooling materials within this mattress can keep you cool. Extremely hot sleepers may need a different option.
  • Couples. Pocket coil mattresses usually don’t perform well with motion isolation, but this mattress stays still and comfortable no matter how much you move around.
  • Those who know their firmness preferences. If you already know which firmness you prefer, this mattress is definitely a great choice for you.

Who Should Avoid the Logan & Cove Pinnacle Mattress?

  • Heavier side sleepers. With the exception of the Plush version, heavier side sleepers may not get as much pressure relief out of this mattress.

  • Tall Euro-top provides well-cushioned comfort
  • Bouncy, responsive, and adaptive thanks to micro-coil layers

“The zoned coil layer here makes all the difference. I’ve never felt so aligned and comfortable as I do on this mattress.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Logan & Cove Pinnacle Mattress)

Logan & Cove Pinnacle Mattress Construction

  • Quilted Euro-Top Section. The 1.5” quilted Euro-top section is the plushest Euro-top from Logan & Cove yet. This section uses layers of hollow-fibre fill and cooling gel foam wrapped in a cover infused with Cooling Nanofibres.
  • 1” ecoLuxe Cooling Gel Foam. The first layer under the Euro-top is ecoLuxe cooling gel foam, which is a memory foam alternative made with less carbon input than standard memory foam. This cooling foam moves heat away from you and provides greater cushion to the coil layers below.
  • 1” Aeroduct Micro Coils. Micro-coils are smaller coils that contour to your body, allowing for greater pressure relief and adaptive support. This 1” layer is just the first in this mattress, so it provides the strongest pressure relief.
  • 1” Elastex Transition Layer. A transition layer of Elastex, a latex alternative foam, separates the micro coil layers to help them work properly. This layer is responsive and cushions all your deepest pressure points.
  • 1” Aeroduct Micro Coils. A second layer of micro coils supports your body from just below the pocket coil layer. This helps support the rest of the layers without producing too much discomfort or pressure.
  • 9” Pocket Coil Support Layer. Finally, a 9” pocket coil layer is zoned for greater comfort and support. This 3-zone layer uses firmer coils in the centre and softer coils under your shoulders and knees, so you get the most support where it is needed most. Additionally, a firm support perimeter helps bolster the edges of the mattress.

Logan & Cove Pinnacle Mattress Performance Scores

Testing the sinkage on the Logan & Cove Pinnacle
Testing the sinkage on the Logan & Cove Pinnacle

Temperature Control – 9.2/10

The Logan & Cove Pinnacle is a good option for those who suffer from night sweats. The cooling foam and multiple layers of coils push heat away from you, venting it off so you feel more comfortable throughout the night. Testers noted that they woke up with night sweats less frequently than on their own home mattresses.

Motion Isolation – 6.4/10

The multiple layers of coils make this mattress move more than even a standard pocket coil mattress might. There aren’t enough foam layers to dampen the movement from the over 4,000 possible coils (combined for all layers), so you’ll feel movement from the other side of the bed. This is one of the only areas where the Logan & Cove Pinnacle doesn’t perform well.

Pressure Relief – 9.1/10

However much the coils might move, they also reduce pressure. The adaptable way they contour to your body reduces pressure because they support your body right where you need it. No two people will experience this pressure relief the same way, but all of our testers have said that it definitely feels better to sleep on the mattress and that it adapts quickly to the way they sleep.

Ease of Movement – 9.0/10

The transition layer and multiple coil layers make it easy to turn over or change position on this mattress. There aren’t enough layers of memory foam to have you feeling ‘stuck’ in the mattress; the foam layers in the construction are made to reduce that quicksand feeling as well. This means that if you have to move around a lot to get comfortable, this is the perfect option for you.

Who is the Logan & Cove Pinnacle Mattress For?

  • Combination sleepers. This mattress works great for all sleeping positions, but it also makes changing positions easy. Both of these features are great for combination sleepers, who must change sleeping positions often to sleep well.
  • Side sleepers. If you sleep on your side, you know that an improper mattress can keep you up all night. The support and pressure relief from the Logan & Cove Pinnacle are great for side sleepers, though.
  • Hot sleepers. This mattress does a great job of moving heat away from you by cycling cooler air up through the mattress. This means that those who naturally sleep how can sleep a little cooler.

Who Should Avoid the Logan & Cove Pinnacle Mattress?

  • Couples and light sleepers. If you often wake up when your partner moves around, this won’t be the right option for you. The multiple layers of coils don’t dampen motion as much as we would have liked.

Best Hybrid – Endy Hybrid

Endy Hybrid on a wooden frame in our bedroom
Best Hybrid
Endy Hybrid’s classic feel and multiple firmness options make it a great choice for those who know what to expect from pocket coil mattresses.
  • Temperature Control: 9.2/10
  • Motion Isolation: 6.4/10
  • Edge Support: 8.3/10
  • Pressure Relief: 9.3/10

  • Ease of Movement: 9.7/10

Highlights

  • Three firmness options
  • Perfect response and great bounce
  • Excellent pressure relief, with greater results in the softer mattress options.

“The Endy Hybrid’s firmness options are perfect, I love being able to choose. The Medium-Firm version was just right for us.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Endy Hybrid)

Endy Hybrid Mattress Construction

Side profile and edge view of the Endy Hybrid mattress
Side profile and edge view of the Endy Hybrid mattress

When you purchase the Endy Hybrid, you’ll have the choice of three different firmness options. These firmness options all use the same construction, but the thickness of the materials changes to create the specific firmness.

  • Quilted Cover. The cover of The Endy Hybrid is a soft, quilted fabric that is lined with Endy foam. This layer helps create some extra plushness on the surface, which reduces strain throughout the mattress.
  • Endy Comfort Foam. The first layer of foam after the soft top is made with Endy’s comfort foam. This layer is responsive and relieves pressure, making it perfect for those who need extra help in these areas. It’s also infused with gel and uses an open-cell foam structure, both of which help a lot with cooling properties.
  • Transition Foam. A middle layer of transition foam is designed for better response and pressure relief. This layer balances your body and keeps you lifted out of the strong, supportive coils below.
  • Zoned Coil Layer. The zoned coil base uses carbon steel pocket coils. They are quiet, won’t squeak when you move around, and are durable enough to withstand years of use. Plus, the zoned section through the centre helps with better lumbar support.
  • Stabilizing Foam. A bottom layer of strong stabilizing foam helps with mattress longevity and helps the layers above maintain integrity.

Endy Hybrid Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.2/10

Endy Hybrid uses a combination of different temperature control methods. Their Comfort Foam is made with an open-cell construction, which leads to better airflow. Plus, this layer is infused with gel. Together, these features make it possible to move more heat out of the mattress. The coils within the mattress promote even more airflow, leading to a cooler mattress overall.

Motion Isolation – 6.4/10

Few pocket coil mattresses isolate motion well, and the Endy Hybrid is another example of this. The coils move around too much to isolate motion, especially for those with restless partners. If you can’t sleep well when your partner gets out of bed or tries to get comfortable, this isn’t the mattress for you.

Pressure Relief – 9.3/10

On the other hand, the Endy Hybrid has great pressure relief. This is especially true as you get into the softer firmness options. The Plush version, for example, performs extremely well when it comes to pressure relief. The comfort layers don’t allow you to sink in too far, which leads to better overall pressure relief and no additional pressure points.

Ease of Movement – 9.7/10

It’s easy to move around on this mattress thanks to the layers of foam it uses. The Comfort Foam layer doesn’t allow for much sinkage, and the transition layer is made with response in mind. The result is a mattress that allows you to move freely, without the quicksand feeling of other memory foam mattresses.

Who is the Endy Hybrid Mattress For?

  • Those who move around a lot. Can’t get comfortable? The Endy Hybrid makes it easy to find the perfect spot without getting sucked into the same body indent where you’ve been sleeping.
  • Canadians on a budget. The Endy Hybrid varies a bit in price (with the Plush version coming at a higher cost), but those on a budget will find that the Endy Hybrid offers great performance for the price.
  • Hot sleepers. Night sweats are common, but they don’t have to be. The Endy Hybrid is just one of the many mattresses that cater to hot sleepers, and it does so extremely well.

Who Should Avoid the Endy Hybrid Mattress?

  • Couples. If you need better motion isolation, the Endy Hybrid mattress shouldn’t be your first choice. Every version of this mattress moves too much for us, so lighter sleepers won’t be able to sleep as well.

A closer look at the unique layers used in the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow

Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress Construction

  • Cooling Cover. Casper’s QuickCool Cover is made with a breathable, cool-to-the-touch cover that keeps you cooler all night long.
  • Airscape Foam with PCM. The top layer is Casper’s Signature Foam with AirScape technology and PCM. AirScape allows heat to vent off through hundreds of small perforations in the surface of the foam, while the Phase-Changing Materials maintain a steady temperature throughout the night, venting off excess heat.
  • HeatDelete Cooling Bands. Between layers of foam are HeatDelete Bands. These bands are exclusive to Casper mattresses and work to continuously reduce heat, pulling it away from the core of the mattress for over 12 hours.
  • Airscape Foam. Another layer of AirScape perforated foam boosts airflow and further reduces pressure, working to keep you cushioned from the stronger zoned layers below.
  • Zoned Airscape Foam. This breathable zoned foam is firmer in the middle to reduce discomfort at your hips and lower back. This layer is also perforated to keep you cool.
  • Align Foam with Gel Support Pods. Align Foam is an ergonomic foam that is thicker where you need more support. The thicker parts of this layer also include up to 82 gel pods to support and align your spine into the proper position.
  • Flexible Coil Base. The coil base uses individual pocket coils to create strong support. This layer supports and balances your body to reduce aches.
  • Edge Support Foam. Finally, a perimeter of edge support foam reduces sagging at the edges of the mattress. Even if you sit at the edge of the bed, you’ll be properly supported by this firmer foam.

Note that the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow is now available in three different firmness options. The Plush and Medium options maintain this construction, while the Firm mattress switches the Align Foam layer and the Zoned Airscape Foam.

Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.4/10

Casper’s multiple cooling technologies work together to keep you cool. It’s one of the coolest pocket coil mattresses on our list because of how all of its perforated foam layers and phase-changing materials tirelessly keep heat away from your body as you sleep. Our testers, who often woke up with night sweats, were amazed at how much this mattress helped them sleep better.

Motion Isolation – 7.0/10

Motion isolation isn’t terrible in the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow, but it could be much better. The AirScape foam creates more movement than we liked, and the layers of zoned, ergonomic foams don’t keep much motion from transferring. This mattress may be okay for those who don’t often wake up when their partner moves around, but it’s not suitable for those who need extremely strong motion isolation.

Pressure Relief- 10/10

The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow shines when it comes to pressure relief. It received a perfect score from us in this area. Side sleepers and those who need additional pressure relief to stay comfortable will love the way this mattress works for them. It cradles your body to reduce strain and provide maximum comfort where you usually get pressure points.

Ease of Movement – 9.5/10

Despite all of its layers of foam, the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow makes movement extremely easy. These foams are responsive and comfortable, but they never allow you to sink so far in that you feel like you can’t turn over. We love the balance and ease of movement in this mattress.

Who is the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow For?

  • Side sleepers. With zoned foams, strong pocket coil support, and a perfect pressure relief score, you can’t get much better than the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow for side sleepers.
  • Hot sleepers. Multiple cooling technologies reduce discomfort and heat throughout the mattress. If you sleep hot, every part of the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow will work to keep you cool.
  • Those with more to spend. The price tag of the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow may induce some sticker shock, but those who have a bit more to spend should consider it worthwhile.

Who Should Avoid the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow?

  • Canadians on a budget. Casper mattresses come at a premium, so they may not be the best choice for those on a tighter budget.

  • UltraDry Cover. A removable UltraDry cover is comfortable and breathable, enhancing both the cleanliness of your bed and how cool you sleep.
  • Thermosync Cooling Foam. The top layer is Thermosync foam, which is infused with graphite. Graphite actively pushes heat away from you, reducing your temperature while staying fresh and comfortable.
  • Airgocell Foam. Emma’s Point Elastic Airgocell foam absorbs heat and moisture, releasing them away from your body to create a perfectly cool sleep environment.
  • MemoryAdapt Foam. MemoryAdapt foam contours to your body, providing a unique pressure map and distributing your weight accordingly. This layer is responsible for most of the motion isolation throughout the mattress, as it is excellent at adapting to your sleep environment.
  • Supportive HRX Foam. HRX is a durable support foam that doesn’t shift, dip, or sink. It offers consistent support for all sleeping positions.
  • Pocket Coil Layer. The ergonomic pocket coil layer uses 7 ergonomic zones for full body support, edge support, and optimal spine position. This extremely supportive base also enhances airflow for a cooler sleep.
  • Stabilizing Foam. A final layer of foundation foam helps the mattress keep its shape, eliminating dipping and sagging over time.

Emma Performance Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.2/10

Layers of temperature-reducing foams reduce heat throughout the mattress. Every part of this mattress attempts to keep you cooler, so you don’t have to worry about overheating throughout the night. It gets great scores from us in this area, though some of our testers who sleep extremely hot needed a bit more from the temperature control of this mattress.

Motion Isolation – 10/10

Emma Performance is our only hybrid mattress to receive a perfect motion isolation score. Since pocket coils usually increase motion transfer, we expected to see similar results here. We were shocked to discover that this mattress did an excellent job of isolating motion despite its coils. We couldn’t feel anything from the other side of the bed at all.

Pressure Relief – 8.7/10

Pressure relief is one area where the Emma Performance doesn’t seem to stack up. It features a poor pressure relief score when compared to most of the other mattresses on this list, but that seems to be due to the thinner comfort layers. The comfort layers here are effective, but they are all relatively thin, which means it’s easier to sink through the layers.

Ease of Movement – 9.6/10

The proprietary Point Elastic foams (along with the other layers in this mattress) help you move around easily. This mattress is extremely responsive and doesn’t make you feel stuck, which is extremely important if you need to move around a lot to stay comfortable.

Who is the Emma Performance Mattress For?

  • Couples. The Emma Performance is the only hybrid we’ve ever given a perfect motion isolation score. The science is sound, and the test results indicate extreme motion isolation on this mattress.
  • Combination sleepers. If you move around a lot and need a mattress that is suited for all sleeping positions, you can’t go wrong with the Emma Performance. This mattress makes movement easy and keeps all sleepers supported.
  • Hot sleepers. Thermosync foam and the host of other comfort features in the Emma Performance help it keep you cool if you usually sleep hot.

Who Should Avoid the Emma Performance Mattress?

  • Side sleepers. Though this mattress is full of comfort layers that should make a difference, side sleepers may not find the pressure relief they need to stay comfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pocket coil mattress?

A pocket coil mattress uses individually wrapped springs that move independently, providing targeted support and reducing motion transfer compared to traditional innerspring options.

Are pocket coil mattresses better than regular spring mattresses?

Yes, pocket coil mattresses are better in a few different ways. They often minimize partner disturbance, with better support and a quieter, more comfortable sleep overall.

How long does a pocket coil mattress last?

A quality pocket coil mattress can last between 8 to 10 years. This depends on how well you maintain the mattress, as well as its construction, the quality of the materials, and the gauge of the pocket coils. Thicker coils tend to last longer.

Are pocket coil mattresses noisy?

No, the individual fabric-wrapped coils that make up pocket coil mattresses reduce squeaks and creaks. They are much quieter than open-coil mattresses overall.
