Scoring Process for Innerspring Mattresses

Our mattresses are scored out of 10 based on how they perform. We look at our testing scores and compare them to tester feedback to reach a conclusion about each mattress. The scores we give them are based on all of the information we have at our disposal.

Testing Innerspring Mattresses

We test mattresses using a combination of practical and simulation testing. We use weighted balls, machines that measure vibration, and heat-mapping software to determine how a mattress will perform under different circumstances. After we’ve tested each option thoroughly, we send the mattresses home with our testing team for long-term evaluation.

How We Choose Innerspring Mattresses in Canada

We chose these mattresses based on their performance. After our testing phases, we select mattresses that stand out to us based on how well they performed during all of our tests. Those mattresses are the ones we recommend to you.

Silk & Snow Hybrid Construction

The Silk & Snow Hybrid is available in three firmness options. Each option features a different construction that helps it achieve its target firmness. We’ll explore each version, but we’ll only explain layers and materials the first time they appear.

The construction of the Silk & Snow Hybrid mattress
The construction of the Silk & Snow Hybrid mattress

Firm Version

  • Antimicrobial Cover. Silk & Snow uses an antimicrobial fabric for all of their mattress covers. This fabric is smooth and breathable, but doesn’t allow for the growth of bacteria.
  • Quilted Layer. A thin foam layer is quilted directly into the cover. This layer provides some light cushioning for your pressure points, as well as immediate comfort when you first lie down.
  • Transition Layer. A layer of high-density foam keeps deep pressure points at bay, ensuring that you aren’t pressed too deeply into the mattress. This layer maintains responsiveness and lifts you out of the coil layer so you can sleep more comfortably.
  • Zoned Pocket Coils with Edge Support. A 9” pocket coil base features up to 1,200 coils. This layer is zoned, with firmer foams in the middle of the mattress for increased lumbar support. Meanwhile, a firm edge support perimeter keeps the edges from sinking.

Medium-Firm Version

  • Antimicrobial Cover. Same as Firm.
  • Quilted Top Layer. Same as Firm.
  • Cooling Gel Foam. Instead of a transition layer, the Medium Firm version of the mattress uses a 2” layer of cooling gel foam. This improves temperature regulation, with added cushioning and a gel infusion to remove heat and prevent build-up.
  • Zoned Pocket Coils with Edge Support. Same as Firm.

Plush Version

  • Antimicrobial Cover. Same as Firm.
  • Cooling Fabric. Right under the cover is a cooling fabric that works overtime to remove heat from your body. This layer removes moisture and drastically reduces the frequency of night sweats.
  • Quilted Top Layer. Same as Firm.
  • Pressure Relief Foam. Under the cover is a 2” layer of memory foam that cradles your body deeper than the other versions of the mattress. If you need pressure relief, this is the option that will provide it.
  • Transition Layer. A 2” transition layer uses high-density foam to keep you lifted out of the coils, so you won’t feel the dense, supportive surface below. This layer also helps delay motion and works to balance your body for greater comfort.
  • Zoned Pocket Coils with Edge Support. In the Plush version of the mattress, the zoned coil base is only 8” tall. This gives the mattress more space for thicker comfort layers.

Silk & Snow Hybrid Performance Scores

Temperature Control: 8.9/10

The Silk & Snow Hybrid manages temperatures effectively across all firmness levels. Cooling gel and a pocket coil base promote better airflow, which prevents heat from building up as you sleep. Our test results don’t indicate that this is a good fit for very hot sleepers, but most Canadians will find it cool and comfortable.

Motion Isolation: 9.2/10

Most hybrid mattresses move around too much to be comfortable. That is not the case with the Silk & Snow Hybrid. Though it uses a coil base, it performs extremely well when it comes to motion isolation. The Plush version does even better.

Pressure Relief: 8.6/10

Firmer models may not provide strong enough pressure relief for heavier sleepers, but the Plush version is comfortable enough for most. Side sleepers who need deep pressure relief and increased comfort should choose the Plush version of the mattress.

Ease of Movement: 9.4/10

The Silk & Snow Hybrid uses responsive foam layers to lift you out of the coil base, so you can shift positions without too much effort. Rolling over in the middle of the night isn’t a struggle, and you won’t feel like you are stuck in the same position for hours.

Who is the Silk & Snow Hybrid For?

  • Couples. Couples and cosleepers will find that this mattress isolates motion better than most hybrids, which can be a unique selling point.
  • Value Shoppers. The Silk & Snow Hybrid is one of the least expensive hybrid models on the Canadian market.
  • All Sleeping Positions. Three firmness levels give every sleeping position something to enjoy. You can choose the option that works best for your sleeping position and preferences.

Who Should Avoid the Silk & Snow Hybrid?

  • Canadians who need pressure relief. Though the Plush version of the Silk & Snow Hybrid does better here, the other two options don’t offer strong pressure relief.

Alternative Option

The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow is a more expensive mattress, but it provides better performance across every category (except motion isolation). It offers relief in areas where the Silk & Snow Hybrid doesn’t, but could also move too much for some sleepers.

Best Budget – Logan & Cove Choice

Logan & Cove Choice mattress in a bedroom

Best Budget
Spring-based mattresses don’t have to be expensive. The bed in a box Logan & Cove Choice offers increased performance for less.
  • Temperature Control: 9.4/10

Highlights

  • Luxury comfort on a budget
  • Comfortable Euro-top design helps promote better pressure relief
  • Zoned coil core helps with lumbar support and alignment

“We didn’t realize how badly we’d been sleeping until we got this mattress. We’re active sleepers who often wake up too hot, so this mattress was the perfect choice for us.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Logan & Cove Choice Mattress)

Logan & Cove Choice Construction

  • Quilted Euro-Top. The 0.75” mattress top uses a cover made with CryoFusion nanofibres, which help remove heat from the top of the mattress. The Euro-Top includes a layer of plush fibre fill and quilted gel-infused foam for additional softness.
  • Cooling Gel Foam. The top layer of the mattress uses gel-infused foam to cushion your body and keep heat from building up as you sleep.
  • Elastex Transition Foam. A transition layer of Elastex, a latex-alternative foam, keeps you lifted out of the firm coil layer and reduces deep pressure on all of your joints. This layer also maintains responsiveness, so it’s easier to move around on this mattress forever.
  • Zoned Coils with Edge Support. The coil base is 9” thick, with zoned pocket springs that are firmer across the middle for increased lumbar support.

Logan & Cove Choice Performance Scores

Temperature Control: 9.4/10

The Logan & Cove Choice does a great job of keeping sleepers cool. The cooling fibres in the cover help to reduce heat at the top of the mattress, while gel-infused foams and a core that enhances airflow work to fully reduce heat. It’s a good option for those who sleep hot.

Motion Isolation: 6.2/10

One area where the Logan & Cove Choice struggles is motion isolation. Like most hybrid mattresses, you’ll be able to feel motion from the other side of the bed. The coils are responsive, but that means that motion transfers too easily to help those who wake up often with movement.

Pressure Relief: 8.9/10

This mattress has a balance of support and comfort, but the pressure relief may not be strong enough for some sleepers. This performance score is respectable, and the pressure relief level will work well for most Canadians. However, those who need extreme pressure relief may need to find a different mattress.

Ease of Movement: 10/10

Logan & Cove Choice gets a perfect ease of movement score from us. This mattress makes moving around effortless, even if you’ve been sleeping in the same position for a while. You won’t feel stuck or uncomfortable throughout the night, so shifting position and turning over are easier than ever.

Testing how the Logan & Cove Choice performs in real world scenarios
Testing how the Logan & Cove Choice performs in real world scenarios

Who is the Logan & Cove Choice For?

  • Hot sleepers. The cooling features in the Logan & Cove Choice are great at removing heat from your sleeping space, no matter how you usually sleep.
  • Active sleepers. This mattress gets a perfect score from us in ease of movement. Active sleepers can move around without any issues.
  • Canadians who need lumbar support. The zoned coil layer is effective at reducing discomfort in your lower back, so those who often wake up with aches can get more comfortable.

Who Should Avoid the Logan & Cove Choice?

  • Canadians who need motion isolation. If you often wake up when your partner tosses and turns, this mattress isn’t a great choice for you.

There is only one area of concern for this mattress, and it’s motion isolation. While this is common for hybrids, the Logan & Cove Choice is a bit worse than most in this area. For a similar price, you can choose the Silk & Snow Hybrid. It features increased motion isolation.

Best Pressure Relief – Endy Hybrid

Performance testing the Endy Hybrid mattress
Performance testing the Endy Hybrid mattress
Best Pressure Relief
Pressure relief can be a struggle for coil-based mattresses, but the Endy Hybrid’s responsive open-cell foam performs better than most in this area.
  • Temperature Control: 9.2/10
  • Motion Isolation: 6.4/10
  • Edge Support: 8.3/10
  • Pressure Relief: 9.3/10
  • Bounce: 9.9/10
  • Eco: 7.0/10
  • Response: 10/10
  • Ease of Movement: 9.7/10
  • Policies: 9/10

Highlights

  • Hybrid comfort and support
  • Great for hot sleepers and those who need pressure relief
  • Easy, responsive movement

“The Endy Hybrid was a great value, even if it wasn’t the most affordable hybrid we looked at. Still, we’re glad we invested in this option over some of the others we tried.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Endy Hybrid)

Endy Hybrid Construction

The Endy Hybrid comes in three firmness options (Firm, Medium-Firm, and Plush). These options use the same construction, with only the thickness and density of the materials to differentiate them.

  • Quilted Cover. The cover is quilted directly to a layer of foam, which gets thicker and more comfortable based on the firmness option you choose. The cover itself is smooth and comfortable.
  • Endy Comfort Foam. The top layer of foam under the cover is open-cell Endy Comfort Foam. It’s a cooling gel foam that keeps air moving through the mattress. Plus, it relieves pressure at the top of the mattress for those who need to reduce uncomfortable pressure points.
  • Transition Foam. The middle layer of transition foam helps cushion the coil layer, providing a smooth transition from comfort layers to the firmer core of the mattress.
  • Pocket Coil Base. The zoned pocket coil base offers balance and strong support. Firmer coils through the centre of the mattress support your hips and lower back, while firmer coils at the edges keep them from sagging when you sit or lie there.
  • Support Foam. This bottom layer helps maintain the shape of the mattress, reducing sagging over time.

Endy Hybrid Performance Scores

Temperature Control: 9.2/10

The Endy Hybrid doesn’t use many active cooling features, but the open-cell foam design and coil-based core maintain airflow through the mattress. Heat doesn’t get a chance to build up, and when it does, it dissipates quickly.

Motion Isolation: 6.4/10

All spring-based mattresses struggle with motion isolation to some degree, and the Endy Hybrid is no exception. While the open-cell foam does isolate motion a bit, it’s no match for how much the zoned pocket coils move around. You’ll be able to feel most motion from the other side of the bed, which means that lighter sleepers may wake up often.

Pressure Relief: 9.3/10

Despite having relatively thin comfort layers, the Endy Hybrid has impressive pressure relief. The Comfort Foam lifts you out of the rest of the mattress, reducing sinkage so you can feel balanced and stable throughout the night. In some mattresses, this would make it firmer. Here, it maintains pressure relief for all sleepers. Heavier sleepers may feel some pressure, but most will be perfectly comfortable.

Ease of Movement: 9.7/10

The responsive layers make movement easy, with foams that bounce back immediately and make it easier to move or change positions. Combination sleepers and those who move around a lot to get comfortable will be able to get comfortable effortlessly.

Who is the Endy Hybrid For?

  • Combination sleepers. Sleepers who need to move around a lot to get comfortable will love how easy it is to move around on this mattress. It’s bouncy and responsive enough for most Canadians.
  • Those who need lumbar support. If you need stronger support under your back, the zoned coils in the Endy Hybrid will get the job done.
  • Side sleepers. The combination of balance, lumbar support, and pressure relief make it the perfect option for side-sleeping Canadians.

Who Should Avoid the Endy Hybrid?

  • Sleepers with restless partners. If you often wake up when your partner tosses and turns, you may need a mattress with better motion isolation.

Best for Cooling – Casper Wave Hybrid Snow

Casper Wave Hybrid in a minimalist bedroom

  • Extreme cooling capabilities
  • Multiple layers of foam that help with cooling and support
  • Luxurious feel that you won’t find elsewhere

“I know Casper is a well-known brand, but I just wanted to reinforce that this mattress is extremely high-quality and feels unique to any other we’ve tried.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Casper Wave Hybrid Snow)

Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Construction

The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow is now available in three firmness options. The construction is the same for the most part, except that the firm version switches two of its layers to make the mattress feel that much firmer.

  • QuickCool Cover. The cover of the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow is breathable, with cooling fibres that reduce heat right at the surface of the mattress.
  • Casper Signature Foam with PCM and AirScape. The top layer of foam is responsive and comfortable, with perforations to help heat escape. It’s coated with phase-changing material, an advanced cooling technology that maintains a consistent temperature throughout the night.
  • HeatDelete Bands. Casper’s proprietary HeatDelete bands pull heat away from you for over 12 hours. These bands are sandwiched between foam layers and conduct heat away from your body.
  • AirScape Foam. Premium AirScape Foam features hundreds of perforations. This layer is designed for airflow, but also to cushion deep pressure points and provide full-body balance.
  • Zoned Latex. Zoned Latex is firmer in the centre to provide enhanced lumbar and hip support. This perforated foam helps with alignment and reduces pressure at your shoulders and knees.
  • Align Foam with Gel Pods. Align Foam is a wave-shaped foam that is thicker where you need increased support. Nestled into the Align Foam layer are up to 82 gel pods, strategically placed under your waist and lower back for further increased support.
  • Flex Coils. The support core of the mattress features individually pocketed springs, which compress where you need them to. This increases support and pressure relief for your entire body.
  • Edge Support Foam. A firm perimeter of edge support foam reduces sagging and sinking at the edges of the mattress. Those who sit or sleep near the edge will find that they are better supported.

Note that in the Firm version of this mattress, the Align Foam and Zoned Latex layers are switched.

Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Performance Scores

Temperature Control: 9.4/10

Casper’s advanced cooling system is extremely effective. With perforated foams, phase-changing material layers, and HeatDelete bands that work to move heat away from you as you sleep, this mattress maintains a consistently cool surface. It’s an excellent option for hot sleepers or those prone to night sweats.

Motion Isolation: 7.0/10

The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow doesn’t do well when it comes to motion isolation, but this is perhaps the only area where this mattress could do better. Movements from one side of the bed can still be felt on the other, so couples with restless partners (or light sleepers) may want to consider a mattress with more intense motion isolation.

Pressure Relief: 10/10

The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow received a perfect score from us for pressure relief. Its numerous comfort layers help relieve strain across your body. Proprietary materials like ergonomic gel pods, zoned latex, and layers of plush foam cradle your body in most sleeping positions.

Ease of Movement: 9.5/10

Even though this mattress is plush and comfortable, movement is effortless. Responsive foam layers and supportive coils allowed our testers to shift positions smoothly. Combination sleepers and those who move around a lot at night should consider this mattress.

Who is the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow For?

  • Side sleepers. Side sleepers need balance, pressure relief, and lumbar support to sleep comfortably. The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow provides all of these features.
  • Those who sleep hot. If you often wake up sweating, the temperature control features in this mattress can help you sleep easier.
  • Luxury shoppers. If you are willing to invest in a premium-quality mattress that will last for years to come, this is the right option for you.

Who Should Avoid the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow?

  • Canadians on a budget. The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow is a luxury mattress that is out of reach for many Canadians on tighter budgets.

“We didn’t know if we’d like the Emma Performance, but we’re glad we took the chance on it now.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Emma Performance)

Emma Performance Mattress Construction

  • UltraDry Cover. Emma’s moisture-wicking cover is soft and breathable. It’s removable and washable, so you can wash it with the rest of your bedding to maintain a clean bed.
  • Thermosync Foam. Graphite-infused foam reduces body temperature. Graphite is a natural conductor that pushes heat away from you to maintain a cool and balanced surface temperature.
  • Airgocell Foam. Open-cell point-elastic foam absorbs heat and moisture. This layer is responsive and cool, springing quickly back into shape when you move away.
  • MemoryAdapt Foam. A layer of MemoryAdapt foam contours to your body to deliver top-notch motion isolation. This layer is one of the reasons that the Emma Performance received such a high motion isolation score from us.
  • Support Foam. Durable, high-resilience foam supports your body while ensuring that the upper layers do their job, too.
  • Ergonomic Pocket Springs. The pocket coil layer features zoned coils. There are seven unique support zones that work to target edge support, spinal alignment, and drastically increased airflow.
  • Stabilizing Base Layer. The high-density base foam layer stops sagging and keeps the coil layer from sagging over time.

Emma Performance Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control: 9.2/10

Emma uses multiple cooling strategies to reduce excessive heat. Graphite-infused foam and moisture-wicking Airogcell technology work together to move heat away from you and reduce night sweats. Those who run very hot may still experience some discomfort, but most will be fine with the cooling features in this mattress.

Motion Isolation: 10/10

Emma Performance gets a perfect motion isolation score from our testing phases. This is extremely rare for any mattress, but especially a hybrid mattress. Despite the coil base, the layers of proprietary materials do a great job of isolating motion and keeping the mattress from moving too much. Couples with restless partners, lighter sleepers, or anyone who is easily disturbed at night should sleep more comfortably on this mattress.

Pressure Relief: 8.7/10

This mattress uses thinner comfort layers to keep you comfortable. While the pressure relief here isn’t exceptional, it is adequate enough for most sleepers. Side sleepers should expect to feel some pressure at the hips and shoulders.

Ease of Movement: 9.6/10

Still, the materials used in this mattress make it easy to move around on the surface. It doesn’t use any traditional memory foam, so you won’t feel that traditional memory foam ‘quicksand’ feeling that is so common with foam-based mattresses.

Who is the Emma Performance For?

  • Couples and light sleepers. Emma Performance is one of the only mattresses that has ever received a perfect motion isolation score from us. It’s definitely the only hybrid mattress to receive the honor.
  • Combination sleepers. The materials in this mattress make it extremely easy to move around on. A quick response time means you’ll never feel stuck.
  • Hot sleepers. Proprietary cooling materials reduce heat at every level of the mattress, so you don’t wake with night sweats.

Who Should Avoid the Emma Performance?

  • Heavier side sleepers. Though the Emma Performance can be fine for most sleeping positions, heavier side sleepers may sink through the relatively thin comfort layers.

“The organic materials in this mattress are a huge win for my allergies. Love that it comes in multiple firmness options, too.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Silk & Snow Organic)

Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Construction

The Silk & Snow Organic is available in three firmness options. We’ll look at the general construction of each version of the mattress, including the variations between them.

  • Organic Cotton Cover. All versions of the Silk & Snow Organic mattress uses an organic cotton cover. It’s smooth and comfortable, wrapping the entire eco-conscious package together.
  • Organic Wool. The top of the mattress uses GOTS-certified organic wool. This is natural fire retardant layer that is also breathable and naturally wicks away moisture. Because of this layer, the rest of the mattress can be chemical-free.
  • Latex Layer. In the Medium Firm and Plush versions of the mattress, the first layer of foam is GOLS-certified latex. This layer provides balance, support, and additional pressure relief.
  • Dunlop Latex Comfort Layer. Every version of the mattress uses as core of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex. This natural layer reduces strain and increases responsiveness for every other part of the mattress. The size of this layer depends on the firmness option you choose. (Firm is 0.8”, Medium Firm is 1.5”, and Plush is 3.5”).
  • Pocket Coil Base. The base of the mattress features pocket coils, which are zoned for better support and increased comfort. Firmer coils through the centre of the mattress help support your hips and lower back, while softer coils in the other regions of the mattress are softer for better pressure relief. Together, these zones balance your body and reduce strain, as well as offering better breathability.
  • Stabilizing Foam. The final layer within the mattress is a thin stabilizing foam. This layer helps the coils keep their shape, which helps the mattress keep its shape over time and resist sagging. Throughout the lifespan of the mattress, it will deliver the same level of support.

Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control: 9.1/10

Each version of the Silk & Snow Organic mattress sleeps cool, though the Firm version sleeps coolest. That’s because the lack of plush materials allows for better heat dissipation and less build-up, even when you sleep in the same position for a long time. Our testers who slept extremely hot found that they were still a little warm, while those who only occasionally woke with night sweats were more comfortable.

Motion Isolation: 7.2/10

Latex and coils don’t prevent motion transfer as well as memory foam might, which is why this mattress doesn’t stay still when your partner moves around. You’ll feel most movements from the other side of the bed, so sleepers who are sensitive to motion may need other options.

Pressure Relief: 8.9/10

The softer versions of this mattress are better at relieving pressure, but even the Firm version is passable. The latex layers are soft and allow for some sinkage, and they still contour to your body for some relief. However, the cradle isn’t as deep as it would be with memory foam, so those who need more intense pressure relief might need a mattress that performs better in this category.

Ease of Movement: 9.4/10

The responsive latex layers make it easy to move around on the surface of this mattress. In other mattresses, memory foam layers may have you feeling stuck. Thankfully, the Silk & Snow Organic mattress doesn’t use any memory foam. You are lifted out of the mattress instead of pressing too deeply.

Who is the Silk & Snow Organic For?

  • Eco-conscious sleepers. Canadians who are concerned about their carbon footprint will enjoy the organic materials used within this mattress.
  • Those who sleep hot. Despite not using any active cooling features, the Silk & Snow Organic isolates and remotes motion well.
  • Edge sleepers. If you sit or sleep near the edge of the mattress, the strong edge support of the Silk & Snow Organic will be great for you.

Who Should Avoid the Silk & Snow Organic?

  • Those sensitive to motion. If you wake up often when your partner turns over or changes position, you may need a mattress with stronger motion isolation than the Silk & Snow Organic can provide.
