How We Tested the Most Comfortable Mattresses in Canada

The Douglas Summit Mattress in our test bedroom
The Douglas Summit Mattress in our test bedroom

Our Scoring Process for Comfortable Mattresses

All of our mattresses are scored out of 10. These scores are calculated by averaging our simulation and practical test scores with our tester’s feedback scores. These scores represent how we expect the mattress to perform under most circumstances.

Testing Comfortable Mattresses in Canada

We tested these mattresses using a range of equipment, prioritizing both simulation and practical tests. We used weighted balls, equipment that measures vibration, and heat mapping applications to help determine how a mattress would perform in most circumstances. Then, our testers used the mattresses for an extended period to get a feel for how they work over time.

How We Select Comfortable Mattresses in Canada

We selected the best comfortable mattresses in Canada by comparing performance and materials across dozens of mattresses. We looked for mattresses with the best pressure relief scores, temperature control features, and support options to find options that were well-suited to the majority of Canadians.

  • Cooling Cover. The Douglas cooling cover is made with Infinitex thread and CryoFusion fibres. It’s removable, machine washable, and keeps you cool all night long.
  • ecoLight Cooling Foam with PCM. The top layer of foam is a cooling gel foam enhanced with PCM, or Phase Changing Material. Polar’s Temperature Balancing material reduces heat by maintaining a consistent temperature throughout the night. This layer is also great for pressure relief.
  • Transition Foam. A layer of Elastex transition foam maintains perfect bounce and helps with motion isolation. Elastex is a latex alternative that relieves pressure and cradles your body to keep you comfortable.
  • Support Base. The base of the Douglas Summit uses motion isolation support foam. This 7” layer balances your body, reduces sagging, and completely removes motion isolation from the mattress.

Douglas Summit Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.2/10

Layers of cooling materials keep this mattress fairly cool throughout the night. Our testers experienced no issues with heat, thanks in part to the cooling gel foam and phase-changing material. This material maintains a consistent temperature throughout the night, so excess heat is funneled away from you and vented into cooler layers below. The transition layer is a latex alternative that doesn’t hold onto heat either, so it sleeps much cooler than expected.

Motion Isolation – 10/10

If you sleep with a restless partner, motion isolation may be essential to help you sleep better. The Douglas Summit gets a perfect motion isolation score from us, which means that it works tirelessly to keep you still and comfortable, even when your partner is moving around. Testers didn’t notice any excess motion making its way to their side of the bed. This is one of the few mattresses that has received this score from us.

Pressure Relief – 10/10

Likewise, the Douglas Summit has a perfect pressure relief score. This mattress utilizes thick materials to relieve pressure, providing relief to all areas that press deepest into the mattress. With other mattresses, these points might become uncomfortable over time, but the Douglas Summit provides enough cushion to completely eliminate these pressure points.

Ease of Movement – 9.9/10

Moving around on an all-foam mattress can be tricky, especially on one with a lot of sinkage and deep foams. The Douglas Summit uses materials that retain their original shape quickly, though. When you turn over to move around to get comfortable, the layers reform to reduce sagging and maintain comfort. Plus, you won’t get sucked back into the spot you just left.

Who is the Douglas Summit Mattress For?

  • Canadians who value performance. Douglas Summit is an extremely high-performing mattress with most scores on the higher end of our range. If you want a mattress that’s going to perform well, this is the one for you.
  • Couples. Couples need motion isolation to sleep peacefully, particularly when one is restless and the other is a lighter sleeper. Douglas Summit is one of the only mattresses web’e ever reviewed to get a perfect motion isolation score from us.
  • Heavier sleepers. Heavier sleepers traditionally need additional pressure relief, better balance, and more support. The Douglas Summit offers all of these features and does them extremely well.

Who Should Avoid the Douglas Summit Mattress?

  • Those who want more bounce. If you want more bounce and response from your mattress, this might not be the one for you. This is the only area where the Douglas Summit got a less-than-ideal score.

  • Micro-coil layer provides customized pressure relief and contouring
  • Strong edge support and ease of movement

“The Frontier is easily the best mattress we’ve tried. After a long line of sleep trials, we’re finally ready to keep a mattress!”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Logan & Cove Frontier Mattress)

Logan & Cove Frontier Mattress Construction

  • Euro-Top Cover. The cover of the Logan & Cove Frontier is a comfortable Euro-top. It uses Cryofusion Nanofibres for additional cooling and breathable hollow-fibre fill for plushness. A final layer of gel-infused foam helps reduce heat.
  • ecoLuxe Cooling Foam. The ecoLuxe cooling gel foam helps cushion your pressure points, including points at your hips and shoulders. It moves excess heat away from you, pushing warm air down through the micro-coils to be vented away.
  • Aeroduct Micro Coils. A layer of 1” micro-coils contours to your body for the pressure relief you need. This creates a custom pressure map that helps keep deeper pressure points at bay.
  • Transition Foam Layer. A middle layer of Elastex creates balance for your body and helps you stay lifted out of the firmer coil base. This layer is a latex alternative that also helps with responsiveness and ease of movement throughout the mattress.
  • Zoned Pocket Coil Base. The base of the mattress features 9” tall pocket coils. They are zoned, with a firmer zone through the centre of the mattress to support your hips and lumbar. This layer also features a perimeter of reinforced edge support.

Logan & Cove Frontier Mattress Performance Scores

A good top view of the Logan & Cove Frontier
A good top view of the Logan & Cove Frontier

Temperature Control – 9.2/10

The Logan & Cove Frontier is a cooler mattress. It features layers of cooling foams and breathable coils to lower the temperature throughout the mattress. It helps that the materials used within the mattress aren’t the typical memory foam you may find in other mattresses, and they don’t retain heat the same as typical memory foam might.

Motion Isolation – 7.1/10

Unfortunately, the Frontier has the same problem as most hybrid mattresses. The multiple coil layers aren’t great for motion isolation, which means you’ll be like to feel most movements from the other side of the bed. If feeling your partner turn over or get out of bed doesn’t bother you, this lower score isn’t a factor. However, those who need better motion isolation to stay asleep may want to choose a mattress that performs better here.

Pressure Relief – 9.4/10

The thicker comfort layers within the Logan & Cove Frontier make it comfortable enough, but the micro-coil layer takes it a step further. This layer of coils contours closely to your body, reducing major pressure points and keeping you comfortably aligned. You are lifted out of the coil layer, and the materials can no longer create uncomfortable pressure points.

Ease of Movement – 9.3/10

It’s easy to move around on the Frontier. While the sinkage is a bit deep for some sleepers, the response time of the materials more than makes up for it. You may sink deeper for a bit of extra pressure relief, but the materials reform quickly, so you aren’t stuck when you need to turn over.

Who is the Logan & Cove Frontier Mattress For?

  • Hot sleepers. Tired of waking up hot? The Logan & Cove Frontier performs well for Canadians who sleep too hot, eliminating night sweats so you can sleep better overall.
  • Canadians with back pain. The lumbar support on the coil layer and the contouring properties of the micro-coil layer work together to provide perfect comfort, reducing strain on your lower back and keeping you aligned properly.
  • Combination sleepers. Combination sleepers need to move through different positions to get comfortable. This mattress is great for all sleeping positions and makes it easy to move around, so combination sleepers can stay comfortable through various position changes.

Who Should Avoid the Logan & Cove Frontier Mattress?

  • Heavier sleepers. While the materials are comfortable, deep, and help support your body well enough, heavier sleepers may find that this mattress has a bit too much sinkage to be comfortable.

Alternative Option

Many couples need strong motion isolation to stay asleep. This mattress doesn’t offer the right level of motion isolation for most, as the coils make the mattress move around a fair bit. The answer is an all-foam mattress, especially options like the Silk & Snow Original or Douglas Summit.

Best Budget – Silk & Snow Mattress

Examining the layers used to create the Silk & Snow Mattress

Best Budget
The Silk & Snow Original is the most affordable mattress on our list, with a Queen mattress starting at just $800.
  • Temperature Control: 8.0/10
  • Motion Isolation: 9.4/10
  • Edge Support: 8.1/10
  • Pressure Relief: 9.7/10
  • Bounce: 7.5/10
  • Eco: 8.5/10

Highlights

  • Three firmness options with different constructions
  • Antimicrobial cover reduces allergy flares and prevents the growth of bacteria
  • Outstanding pressure relief and motion isolation

“The Silk & Snow Original’s different firmness options felt like a steal at this price. We love our Plush Silk & Snow mattress and would buy another in the future.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Silk & Snow Original)

Silk & Snow Original Mattress Construction

Edge support and pressure relief from the Silk & Snow Mattress
Edge support and pressure relief from the Silk & Snow Mattress
  • Antimicrobial Cover. All versions of the Silk & Snow Original use an antimicrobial cover. This fabric actively prevents the growth of bacteria, reducing odours and keeping your bed fresh. This cover is also removable and machine-washable.
  • Pressure Relief Foam. Gel memory foam reduces heat and helps with intense pressure relief at the surface of the mattress. It’s a durable layer that comes in three different sizes based on your firmness preference. For the Firm version, this layer is 1.5” thick. It is 2” thick in the Medium-Firm version. When you get to the plush version, this layer is made with 2” of a slightly softer foam, but it is still infused with gel for cooling.
  • Transition Foam (Medium-Firm and Plush Only). The Medium-Firm and Plush versions of this mattress use a layer of dense transition foam to offer better pressure relief and reduce motion transfer. It is a 2” thick layer in both versions.
  • Durable Base Foam. The bottom of the mattress features a thick, durable base foam layer. This layer offers support and balance throughout the mattress, and it is a different size depending on the firmness option you choose. In the Firm version, it is 7.5”. It’s 6” in the Medium-Firm mattress and 8” in the Plush version.

Silk & Snow Original Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 8.0/10

One of the few areas where the Silk & Snow Original didn’t work for us was temperature control. While this mattress mitigates some heat, it still has a lot of heat retention. Despite its best efforts, it doesn’t completely get rid of heat or moisture, so hotter sleepers are more likely to wake up sweating than on mattresses with a higher score.

Motion Isolation – 9.4/10

All-foam mattresses are great at stopping motion from transferring from one side of the bed to the other. The Silk & Snow is no exception. No matter which option you choose, you will sleep more peacefully when your partner’s tossing and turning isn’t keeping you awake. There’s hardly any motion transfer on this mattress.

Pressure Relief – 9.7/10

No matter which option you choose, this mattress is extremely good at relieving pressure. We tested the Medium Firm version first, so expect the Plush version to be even better at removing uncomfortable pressure points.

Ease of Movement – 9.1/10

It’s easy to move around on the Silk & Snow mattress. The foams work to quickly regain their shape, so you can avoid the ‘quicksand’ feeling that usually comes with memory foam. This means you can turn over without any additional effort, ideal for those who move around a lot at night.

Who is the Silk & Snow Original Mattress For?

  • Side and stomach sleepers. The deep sinkage and strong pressure relief are fine for side and stomach sleepers, especially those who like a softer feel. Of course, the feel of this mattress is different in each firmness option, so always choose the one that will work best for you.
  • Couples and co-sleepers. The all-foam layers of this mattress do a great job of isolating and removing motion. Those who usually wake up when their partner tosses and turns may feel more comfortable on this mattress.
  • Canadians on a budget. The Silk & Snow Original is a budget mattress, but it doesn’t cost a fortune. If you have a tighter budget, this option may be best for you.

Who Should Avoid the Silk & Snow Original Mattress?

  • Back Sleepers. If you sleep on your back, you may need a mattress with less sinkage and more support.

Alternative Option

The Silk & Snow Mattress isn’t cool enough for the hottest sleepers, which is why we can’t recommend it to those who sleep hot. If you truly sleep hot, other foam options on our list (such as the Octave Horizon or Douglas Summit) might be better choices.

Best All Foam – Octave Horizon

Best All Foam
The Octave Horizon is a solid foam mattress that performs extremely well in comfort areas. It keeps you cool and offers outstanding pressure relief, which is ideal for most sleepers.
  • Temperature Control: 9.4/10
  • Motion Isolation: 8.5/10
  • Edge Support: 8.9/10
  • Pressure Relief: 9.8/10
  • Bounce: 7.8/10
  • Eco: 9.0/10
  • Response: 9.8/10
  • Ease of Movement: 9.5/10
  • Policies: 10/10

Highlights

  • Near-perfect pressure relief scores
  • Responsive and easy to move around on
  • Excellent cooling properties for those who sleep hot

“Octave Horizon greatly improved our sleep. We can see the difference every day. We have way more energy and fewer aches after sleeping on this mattress.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Octave Horizon)

Octave Horizon Mattress Construction

  • Cooling Cover. Octave Horizon’s cover is an upgraded version of their standard cover. It uses more cooling fibres than the other options you’ll find from this brand, making it a cooler option overall.
  • Copper-Infused Memory Foam with PCM. The top layer on the Octave Horizon is made with copper-infused memory foam. This helps conduct heat away from you, reducing higher temperatures with the help of a PCM treatment. PCM, or phase-changing material, won’t heat past a certain temperature, pushing all excess heat down through the mattress to keep you cool.
  • Aerated Latex. The second layer of foam within the Octave Horizon is an aerated latex. It’s breathable and fresh, with perforations to help with cooling and a supportive profile overall.
  • Cooling Gel Foam. Another comfort layer made with cooling gel foam is exclusive to this upgraded mattress model. This layer is perfect for pressure relief, and it’s part of the reason that this mattress gets such a high pressure relief score. It also keeps heat away, reducing discomfort throughout the night.
  • Elastex Transition Layer. A layer of transition foam helps with removing any additional pressure, as well as remaining responsive. It’s a resilient foam layer that keeps you balanced without sinking too much, so you don’t have to feel the firmer coils below.
  • Multi-Zone Support Foam Base. The base of the Octave Horizon uses air channels to keep the core of the mattress cool. This layer also has five distinct ergonomic zones to help give you the support you need and maintain alignment and balance.

Octave Horizon Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.4/10

Multiple layers of cooling materials contribute to the Octave Horizon’s cooling score. This mattress uses cooling gel foam, perforated latex, and copper infusions to reduce temperatures at the core of each layer. At the top of the mattress, a cooling cover and a layer of phase-changing material work overtime to reduce higher temperatures.

Motion Isolation – 8.5/10

While most memory foam mattresses are great for motion isolation, the Octave Horizon does a bit worse than we generally like to see. Our testers had some issues with motion transfer, which we didn’t expect. However, the aerated latex and the channeled foam base may be to blame for this. Continuous layers of foam are better at keeping the bed still, but here you’d have to sacrifice some cooling to achieve perfect motion isolation.

Pressure Relief- 9.8/10

The Horizon does a much better job when it comes to pressure relief. It gets a near-perfect score from us, which means that we noticed very little wrong with the way it handled pressure. We noted fewer areas of intense pressure. Those who usually struggle with pressure points will find relief on this mattress and its multiple thick comfort layers.

Ease of Movement – 9.5/10

The comfort layers used within the Octave Horizon don’t hinder its ease of movement, which is great news for Canadians who need to adjust their position to get comfortable throughout the night. The top layers of the mattress quickly bounce back to their original shape, leaving you plenty of time to get comfortable without feeling stuck.

Who is the Octave Horizon Mattress For?

  • Canadians who have a bit more to spend. Octave Horizon isn’t the most expensive mattress on our list, but it does command a higher price tag than some of our other options.
  • Hot sleepers. Octave Horizon uses a host of cooling features to reduce higher temperatures. It receives a higher score in this area because we noted less heat build-up and discomfort overall during our testing phases.
  • Those who need extreme pressure relief. This mattress gets a near-perfect pressure relief score from us. It’s one of the best options for those who experience uncomfortable pressure points that keep them awake.

Who Should Avoid the Octave Horizon Mattress?

  • Those who want a little more bounce. Despite its lower motion isolation score, the Horizon doesn’t move enough to be considered bouncy. Canadians who need a mattress with better feedback should avoid this one.

Best Luxury
The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow is a luxury mattress. While that comes with a luxury price tag, it also means it’s packed full of proprietary materials and features you won’t find in other mattresses.

  • Motion Isolation: 7.0/10
  • Edge Support: 8.9/10
  • Pressure Relief: 10/10

  • A perfect pressure relief score to reduce aches
  • Great bounce and response

“Casper Wave Hybrid Snow is hands-down the coolest mattress we’ve ever slept on. As chronic hot sleepers, we were starting to believe we would never find a mattress that worked as well as this one, but Casper proved us wrong.”

A closer look at the unique layers used in the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow
  • technology. It’s cool to the touch and incredibly smooth.
  • Airscape Layer with PCM. The first layer of foam is Casper’s Signature comfort foam with AirScape technology. This means it’s a perforated foam, which allows heat to vent out through hundreds of small holes along the surface. A layer of PCM coating maintains a consistent, cooler temperature.
  • HeatDelete Cooling Bands. Casper’s proprietary HeatDelete Cooling Bands continuously pull heat away from your body. These bands are nestled between foam layers and work for 12+ hours to keep heat moving away from your body.
  • Airscape Foam. Another layer of perforated AirScape foam increases airflow throughout the mattress. This layer is also responsible for the majority of pressure relief throughout the mattress.
  • Zoned Airscape Transition Layer. A layer of zoned foam offers better support for you lumbar and hips, relieving strain that may cause discomfort and back pain. This layer is also breathable, with Airscape technology to continue the cooling properties that are present throughout he mattress.
  • Align Foam with Gel Pods. Casper’s most unique foam construction is its Align Foam, and this version comes with nested gel pods for even better support and balance. Align foam is thicker in the places where you need greater support and thinner in areas where you need pressure relief. This creates a unique feel and strong, necessary support.
  • Flexible Coil Base. The base of the mattress features flexible pocket coils. These coils compress individually to reduce motion transfer and maintain support throughout the rest of the mattress.
  • Edge Support Perimeter. A perimeter of edge support foam keeps sagging at the edges to a minimum. Your mattress should have consistent support from one edge to the other, and this is exactly what this perimeter offers.

In Canada, the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow is now available in three different firmness options. You can choose Plush, Medium, or Firm at checkout. These options mostly vary in the depth of their materials, but the Firm version switches the Align Foam and Zoned AirScape layer for a more supportive feel.

Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.4/10

The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow shines when it comes to temperature control. Layers of cooling materials, including perforated foam and PCM, work together to keep heat moving out of the mattress and away from you. Our hottest testers remained comfortable all night long on this mattress.

Motion Isolation – 7.0/10

As with all hybrid mattresses, the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow isn’t a great choice for couples. While it isolates some motion, those who wake up when their partner turns over or moves around will not be able to sleep peacefully on this mattress. It’s best for those who don’t mind motion.

Pressure Relief – 10/10

The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow gets a perfect pressure relief score from us. Its materials are comfortable enough to keep you lifted off the mattress, supported, but with no pressure on uncomfortable pressure points. The zoned layers in the middle of the mattress and comfortable perforated foam help reduce any strain on your body.

Ease of Movement – 9.5/10

This mattress is extremely responsive, so it makes sense that it’s also easy to move around on. You’ll be able to change positions quickly and without any extra effort or strain, which makes finding a comfortable position easy. The materials respond quickly, springing back into place when you move away.

Who is the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress For?

  • Hot sleepers. If there is one thing the Casper Wave Hybrid stands out for, it’s cooling. While it gets extremely high scores in other areas, this mattress stays much cooler than other options we’ve tested.
  • Side sleepers. Side sleepers need strong pressure relief and alignment. Casper Wave Hybrid Snow offers both of these features, leaving side sleepers more comfortable than most options on the Canadian market.
  • Canadians who have a hard time getting comfortable. Some Canadians have to move around a lot to get comfortable at night. If you do, this mattress makes it a bit easier to get comfortable without sinking too far into the layers.

Who Should Avoid the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress?

  • Couples. The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow has a lot of things going for it, but the perforated layers don’t do much for motion isolation. Couples looking for a still mattress should look elsewhere.
