Scoring Process for Pillow Top Mattresses

The best pillow top mattresses in Canada receive a score based on their performance in multiple test trials. These scores come from tester feedback and multiple rounds of testing scores from our simulation and practical tests. We average these scores to get a good idea of how each mattress will perform in various conditions.

How We Test Pillow Top Mattresses

We test the best pillow top mattresses in Canada by putting them through a rigorous gauntlet of tests. These include ball drop tests with weighted basket balls, motion tests with equipment that measures vibrations, and heat map testing for temperature control. Then, our testers take over. They try the mattress in their home for a number of months and give their feedback at the end of their testing period.

Choosing the Best Pillow Top Mattresses

We chose the pillow-top mattresses on our list by eliminating options that didn’t perform up to our standards. If more than one category scores egregiously low, we skipped it in favour of options that performed better.

  • Quilted Euro-Top Section. The Euro-top section is comfortable and pillowy, with a diamond-stitched cover, cooling fibres, hollow-fibre fill, and a layer of cooling gel foam. These materials create a soft, cloudlike surface.
  • 1” ecoLuxe Cooling Gel Foam. The first layer under the Euro-top is cooling gel foam. It reduces heat at the top of the mattress, creating perfect pressure relief as it keeps you cool.
  • 1” Aeroduct Micro Coils. The first layer of coils within the mattress are pocketed micro coils. These adaptive coils flex around your body, providing the strongest support where you most need it and excellent pressure relief.
  • 1” Elastex Transition Layer. A transition layer separates the micro coil layers to help them work better. This layer is responsive, too; it contributes to the overall responsiveness and ease of movement throughout the mattress.
  • 1” Aeroduct Micro Coils. The second layer of micro coils reduces deeper pressure and keeps your body lifted out of the strong support coils.
  • 9” Pocket Coil Support Layer. The final coil layer uses 9” pocket coils, zoned into 3 distinctive layers. The firmer coils in the center boost your hips and lower back, while coils in the remaining zones stay softer for greater pressure relief.

Logan & Cove Pinnacle Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.2/10

Breathable coils and cooling foams create a cooler mattress overall. This mattress pulls heat away from you as you sleep, wicking away moisture to keep you comfortable. While it might not do the job for extremely hot sleepers, it’s perfect for those who occasionally overheat.

Motion Isolation – 6.4/10

Three layers of coils move a lot, so the Logan & Cove Pinnacle is not a great mattress for motion isolation. You can feel every movement from the other side of the bed. Our testers told us they weren’t able to stay asleep when their testing partners got up out of bed, or when they tossed and turned during normal sleep.

Pressure Relief – 9.3/10

The Logan & Cove Pinnacle includes an integrated pillow top section called a Euro-top. This section uses fill and comforting foam to create the cloud-like comfort at the top of the mattress. Layers below, including the contouring micro-coil layer, relieve pressure by offering increased support where you are heaviest (including your hips and shoulders).

Ease of Movement – 9.7/10

Logan & Cove uses non-traditional memory foams in their mattresses. Since memory foam is usually the reason you feel stuck in the mattress, that’s good news for those who need to move around a lot during the night. It’s easy to change position without feeling like you can’t get out of the indent where you were just sleeping.

Who is the Logan & Cove Pinnacle Mattress For?

  • Hot sleepers. While coil layers cycle breathable air up through the mattress, cooling fabrics and foams on top reduce heat and pull it away from you as you sleep. If you often have night sweats, the Pinnacle could help you sleep more easily.
  • Eco-conscious Canadians. Those who are concerned about their carbon footprint will love the Logan & Cove Pinnacle. Its foams are made with less carbon input and fewer chemicals than standard memory foam or latex.
  • Side sleepers. Logan & Cove Pinnacle has great pressure relief and supportive zoned coils. The micro-coil layers contour to your body for a unique support map, which is important for side sleepers.

Who Should Avoid the Logan & Cove Pinnacle Mattress?

  • Those who need motion isolation. Those who frequently wake up when their partner moves around on the mattress may need to choose a different option. The Pinnacle doesn’t have great motion isolation.

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress)

Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress Construction

Firm Version

  • Antimicrobial Cover. Like every Silk & Snow mattress, the cover of the Hybrid is made with fabric that prevents the growth of bacteria. This protects your bed from odours and helps keep your sleeping surface fresh.
  • Quilted Layer. A layer of quilted foam is quilted right into the cover. This layer provides additional cushion and keeps you comfortable when you first lie down.
  • Transition Foam. A 1” transition foam layer reduces deep pressure and reduces how much you can feel the firmer coil layer below.
  • Zoned Pocket Coils with Reinforced Edge. A 9” layer of zoned pocket coils is firmer in the centre for better lumbar support. These pocket coils create a firmly supportive mattress without too much pressure.

Medium Firm Version

  • Antimicrobial Cover. Same as Firm.
  • Quilted Layer. Same as Firm.
  • Cooling Foam. In the Medium Firm version of the Silk & Snow Hybrid, the transition layer is a thick cooling foam. This cooling foam layer is 2” thick, with gel-infused memory foam to create strong pressure relief and exceptional cooling.
  • Zoned Pocket Coils with Reinforced Edge. Same as Firm.

Plush Version

  • Antimicrobial Cover. Same as Firm.
  • Cooling Fabric. A layer of cooling fabric is exclusive to the Plush version of the mattress. This layer is quilted right into the top layer and is designed to wick away heat and moisture throughout the night.
  • Quilted Layer. Same as Firm.
  • Pressure Relief Foam. A 2” layer of high-density memory foam relieves pressure, reducing strain on your body and allowing you to fall asleep more quickly than regular memory foam would.
  • Transition Foam. The 2” transition layer helps keep you from sinking too far into the mattress. It cushions the coil layers so you never feel the firmer support without extra cushioning. This layer is also responsible for how easy it is to move around on the mattress.
  • 8” Pocket Coil Layer with Reinforced Edge. The zoned pocket coil layer is a 1” thinner on the Plush version, which allows the mattress more room for comfort layers. However, the coils provide the same level of excellent zoned support.

Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress Performance Scores

Silk & Snow Hybrid edge support and profile view
Silk & Snow Hybrid edge support and profile view

Temperature Control – 8.9/10

The Silk & Snow Hybrid doesn’t sleep hot. It uses cooling materials and fabrics to reduce higher temperatures as you sleep, but it doesn’t perform at the highest possible level. The mattress is still a little warm, and a bit of heat is allowed to build up. Our testers noted a heat reduction, but not as much as they would have expected.

Motion Isolation – 9.2/10

On the other hand, the Silk & Snow Hybrid is one of the only hybrid mattresses we’ve ever tested to receive a good motion isolation score. This mattress stops motion as it happens, so you don’t feel much from the other side of the bed. The largest motions may still carry over, but most of the time, the best is still and comfortable.

Pressure Relief – 8.6/10

The Silk & Snow Hybrid didn’t relieve pressure as well as we hoped, but we tested the Medium Firm version. The Plush version uses additional materials to reduce pressure and cushion your body, so it performs better here. Otherwise, this mattress might not be the best for those who experience uncomfortable pressure points.

Ease of Movement – 9.4/10

Silk & Snow Hybrid does its best to keep you lifted out of the mattress. You won’t sink in too far, bottom out, or feel stuck in the materials. If you need to move around, turn over, or change position at night, it won’t be a struggle. Our testers noted how easy it was to get comfortable on this mattress.

Who is the Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress For?

  • Couples with restless partners. Endy Hybrid is one of the only hybrid mattresses we’ve tested that performs well in motion isolation. It’s the only one we can recommend to restless couples or those who need a lot of motion isolation.
  • Those who move around a lot. Getting stuck in the mattress is annoying, but the Silk & Snow Hybrid makes it easy to move around. This mattress is responsive, and the materials reform quickly to allow for better ease of movement.
  • Canadians who want to choose their firmness. Silk & Snow Hybrid’s three firmness levels allow you some level of customization. You can choose the firmness option that works best for you.

Who Should Avoid the Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress?

  • Canadians who need pressure relief. While the Plush version of the Silk & Snow Hybrid is better at this, most options don’t provide exceptional pressure relief.

Best Hybrid – Endy Hybrid

The Endy Hybrid uses zoned coils and a comforting quilted cover to create a supportive, balanced experience. Each of its three firmness options performs well in most areas.
  • Temperature Control: 9.2/10

  • Responsive open-cell foams
  • Temperature control through open-cell construction and gel-infused foams
  • Pressure relief for side sleepers

Endy Hybrid Mattress Construction

Testing sinkage on the Endy Hybrid with a lightweight dumbbell

The Endy Hybrid mattress is available in three different firmness options. Unlike other mattresses that offer different firmnesses, the Endy Hybrid uses the same construction. The only difference between them is the thickness of the layers.

  • Quilted Cover. The cover of the Endy Hybrid is made of quilted fabric, with a layer of Endy’s memory foam quilted to it. This layer adds a bit of cushion and comfort to the top of the mattress.
  • Endy Comfort Foam. Endy’s open-cell comfort foam is built for breathability and response. This layer helps reduce heat and keeps you moving easily on top of the mattress.
  • Transition Foam. A layer of transition foam cushions pressure points and keeps the mattress bouncy. If you love a responsive mattress, this transition foam layer is perfect.
  • Zoned Coil Layer. A supportive core of zoned pocket coils creates strong support and balancing. This keeps strain and discomfort at bay throughout the night, no matter how you sleep.
  • Stabilizing Foam. A final layer of stabilizing foam reduces sagging over time, helping the mattress maintain its shape and durability in the long term.

Endy Hybrid Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.2/10

While this mattress only really uses gel-infused foam and breathable materials, it’s great at reducing higher temperatures. If you sleep hot, this mattress can help reduce excess heat at the surface of the mattress. This reduces night sweats and keeps you comfortable even when it’s warm outside.

Motion Isolation – 6.4/10

One area where the Endy Hybrid didn’t perform as well as we’d hoped was motion isolation. The coils and open-cell foam are more breathable, but they also make it easy for the mattress to move. If you partner turns over, you’re going to feel it. Our simulation tests revealed a lot of vibration from the other side of the mattress, as well as tester complaints about motion.

Pressure Relief – 9.3/10

All versions of the Endy Hybrid relieve pressure well, but it performs better as the mattress gets softer. Our score here is for the Medium Firm version of the mattress, but the Plush version does even better. Testers loved how comfortable this mattress was, even after of hours of laying on it.

Ease of Movement – 9.7/10

Open-cell foams are constructed differently than standard memory foam. Because of this, they are less likely to make you feel stuck. You can turn over without feeling stuck in your body indent and change positions without a struggle.

Who is the Endy Hybrid Mattress For?

  • Canadians who want to choose their firmness. The Endy Hybrid is now available in three firmness options. You can choose the option that works best for you.
  • Side sleepers. Endy uses supportive coils and pressure-relieving foams in the Endy Hybrid. Side sleepers stay comfortable without any strain or pressure points.
  • Hot sleepers. The Endy Hybrid uses open-cell gel foam and breathable coils to cycle warmer air out of your sleep environment. Their temperature-neutral foams stay cool.

Who Should Avoid the Endy Hybrid Mattress?

  • Those who want to try their mattress for longer. Endy is one of the only mattress companies that still uses a 100-night sleep trial. Most use a 365-night trial at this point, so you should look elsewhere if you are concerned that this sleep trial is too short.

Best Organic – Silk & Snow Organic

Best Organic
Silk & Snow’s Organic mattress is a hybrid with multiple layers quilted right into the cover. This mattress is fully natural and available in three different firmness levels.
  • Temperature Control: 9.1/10

  • Edge Support: 9.0/10

Highlights

  • Fully natural and organic materials
  • Strong temperature control for an organic mattress

“We were surprised by the price of the Silk & Snow Organic. It’s less expensive than other options but is a really high-quality mattress.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Silk & Snow Organic)

Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Construction

Firm Version

  • GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton Cover. The cover of the Silk & Snow Organic is a soft, breathable organic cotton cover that is quilted right into a layer of organic wool (and other materials in softer versions of the mattress).
  • GOTS-Certified Organic Wool. A layer of organic wool provides extra pressure relief and temperature control. Best of all, it eliminates the need for synthetic fire-resistant materials.
  • GOLS-Certified Latex. The Firm version uses a 0.8” layer of organic Dunlop latex to create better pressure relief without sacrificing firm support.
  • Zoned Pocket Coils with Reinforced Edge Support. The pocket coil base of the Silk & Snow Organic is zoned, meaning the coils through the centre of the mattress are firmer for better support. Additionally, the coils around the outside edge are firmer to support the edges and prevent sagging.

Medium Firm Version

  • GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton Cover. Same as Firm.
  • GOTS-Certified Organic Wool. Same as Firm.
  • Quilted Latex Layer. An additional top layer of 0.8” latex quilted right to the cover and the organic wool layer creates a deeper cushion and better balance for your body.
  • GOLS-Certified Latex. In the Medium Firm version of the mattress, this supportive Dunlop latex layer is 1.5” tall and provides excellent response.
  • Zoned Pocket Coils with Reinforced Edge Support. Same as Firm.

Plush Version

  • GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton Cover. Same as Firm.
  • GOTS-Certified Organic Wool. Same as Firm.
  • Quilted Latex Layer. Same as Medium Firm.
  • GOLS-Certified Latex. In the Plush version, this Dunlop latex layer is a full 3.5” tall. It’s comfortable and balanced, supporting your body and promoting better balance without too much sinkage.
  • Zoned Pocket Coils with Reinforced Edge Support. Same as Firm.

Silk & Snow Organic Performance Scores

A side view of the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress
A side view of the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress

Temperature Control – 9.1/10

Due to the layers of coils, natural wool, and breathable materials throughout the mattress, the Silk & Snow Organic offers great temperature control. While this mattress doesn’t use active cooling features (and may not be suitable for extremely hot sleepers), its performance in this area was surprising for us. Our testers noted that they felt cooler than on their standard memory foam mattresses.

Motion Isolation – 7.2/10

The Silk & Snow Organic performs well across many areas, but motion isolation isn’t one of them. While this isn’t the worst motion isolation performance we’ve seen, it’s still not going to be enough for those who need to dampen motion from the other side of the bed. Testers noted a lot of motion transferred to their side, and our simulation tests encountered the same problem.

Pressure Relief- 8.9/10

Pressure relief is a middling performance area for the Silk & Snow Organic. We reviewed the Medium Firm version of the mattress, and the pressure relief gets the job done, but doesn’t go above and beyond our expectations at all. The Plush version has much better pressure relief, as its layers are extremely cushioned and comfortable.

Ease of Movement – 9.4/10

Because this mattress uses latex and natural materials instead of memory foam, it’s much easier to move around on than traditional memory foam. You won’t feel stuck in the mattress, even when you get the softest version. Instead, you’ll always be able to turn over without any issues.

Who is the Silk & Snow Organic For?

  • Warm sleepers. The Silk & Snow Organic isn’t the best option for extremely hot sleepers, but those who occasionally wake up with night sweats will be comfortable here.
  • Eco-conscious Canadians. If you are worried about synthetic materials and want to reduce environmental impact, natural materials are the way to go. The Silk & Snow Organic is made with natural and organic materials without synthetic blends.
  • Restless sleepers. Some sleepers need to constantly turn over or move to get comfortable. The Silk & Snow Organic won’t have you feeling stuck in the mattress, so you are free to move around.

Who Should Avoid the Silk & Snow Organic?

  • Couples. The Silk & Snow Organic mattress is a good choice for those who aren’t affected by motion, but couples who need their bed to stay still should look elsewhere.

  • Quilted Euro-Top Cover. The cooling cover of the Logan & Cove Frontier is made with CryoFusion cooling fibres to reduce heat. Below the fabric is a layer of hollow-fibre fill and quilted gel-infused foam to create a comfortable Euro-top.
  • Cooling Gel Foam. The first layer under the Euro-top is made with ecoLuxe cooling gel foam. This foam is infused to remove heat, but also cushions your body to relieve pressure throughout the night.
  • Aeroduct Micro Coils. A layer of 1” micro coils contours to your body, providing customized pressure relief and support. This layer works with you to give you exactly the relief you need with its adaptable coils.
  • Elastex Transition Layer. Elastex is a latex alternative that remains bouncy and responsive. This transition layer lifts your body out of the firmer coils below for balance and deep pressure relief.
  • 9” Zoned Pocket Coil Layer. The zoned pocket coil layer at the bottom of the Logan & Cove Frontier uses firmer coils at the centre for better support. It also features a firm foam perimeter to prevent sagging edges.

Logan & Cove Frontier Mattress Performance Scores

Temperature Control – 9.2/10

The Frontier is a Euro-top mattress, which functions similarly to a pillow top. Usually, these mattresses sleep hot, but the layers of cooling gel foam and hollow-fibre fill in this mattress work to reduce heat. The dual coil layers also vent heat and funnel cooler air up through the mattress, so you stay cooler.

Motion Isolation – 7.1/10

The one category where we wish the Logan & Cove Frontier performed better was motion isolation. This mattress moves a fair bit, possibly because of the dual coil layers. They give the mattress so much more room to move when you do. If you usually have trouble with your partner tossing and turning, this mattress isn’t right for you. Our testers noted lots of motion from the other side of the bed.

Pressure Relief – 9.4/10

However, the Euro-top helps create much better pressure relief. The micro coil layer also contours to your body, providing a much more comfortable surface than foam alone. Side sleepers will be much more comfortable on this mattress than some of the others we’ve looked at.

Ease of Movement – 9.3/10

It’s easy to move around on the surface of the Frontier. Unlike other softer mattresses (or other mattresses with pillow top options or equivalents), the Frontier’s latex alternative foams and multiple coil layers make it easier to stay out of the mattress instead of bottoming out and feeling stuck.

Who is the Logan & Cove Frontier Mattress For?

  • Hot sleepers. If you sleep hot, the Logan & Cove Frontier might be a good choice for you. Its cooling gel foam layers and breathable coils help lower the temperature and reduce heat buildup.
  • Those who sleep near the edge. The firm edge support perimeter makes the Frontier perfect for those who sleep nearer the edge, or those who like to sit at the edge before getting up in the morning.
  • Canadians on a budget. The Logan & Cove Frontier is a luxury Euro-top mattress, but it comes at a much more affordable price than most of the other options we’ve found.

Who Should Avoid the Logan & Cove Frontier Mattress?

  • Couples. One of the only areas where the Logan & Cove Frontier suffers is motion isolation. This mattress is extremely mobile, so it’s responsive and bouncy at the cost of staying still when your partner moves around.
