Testing Cooling Pillows in Canada

Our Testing Process for Cooling Pillows in Canada

We test all of our pillows in real-world scenarios to see how they perform. We test for support, sinkage, feel, cooling, and more using measuring devices and real-world testimonies. Once we are finished with the pillows, our testers take them home to test them over time. The result is a complete look at how these pillows will work for different sleepers over time.

How We Chose These Cooling Pillows

All of the cooling pillows on our list are selected for the way they perform, particularly with support and cooling. We considered a lot of factors when selecting cooling pillows for our list. Of course, temperature control was important to us. We also looked at support levels, options, and a host of other factors to determine if we were recommending the best options possible.

Fill

The core of this pillow uses soy-infused bio memory foam. This foam is made with sustainable materials and renewable resources. It’s poured in Italy by experts who know how to get the very best out of eco-conscious materials. The core can be softer or firmer based on the option you choose at checkout, too.

Cover

The cover of this pillow is made with a sustainable material blend. It’s 38% TENCEL Lyocell and 62% polyester. The TENCEL is made from a sustainable process that extracts materials from wood. It’s harvested in a closed-loop system that preserves water and energy, too. Even so, it’s an extremely smooth material that is softer than you might expect.

TENCEL has antimicrobial properties that can keep your pillow fresh for longer. This material doesn’t allow bacteria to grow, so your pillow won’t have an odour or any staining.

Performance

Because you can choose the firmness level for this pillow, most of our testers found that it performed well for them. It’s extremely supportive for all sleeping types, with proper head and neck support across most of our testing team. The ventilated foam and cool, breathable cover do a good job of removing heat from your sleep environment.

The Firm option is best for alignment (an important feature for side sleepers), while the Soft is better suited to back and stomach sleepers.

Sizes and Options

When you purchase the Silk & Snow Eco Soy Pillow, you’ll have to make a couple of decisions. You can choose whether you want the Queen size (16″ x 24″) or the King (16″ x 34″). You can also choose your preferred firmness. This doesn’t affect loft, so keep in mind that this choice is only for the feel of the pillow.

Both the Firm and Soft versions of this pillow are the same height. There is a notable difference in feel between them, with the Firm being more supportive and the Soft being generally more comfortable. How they work for you depends on how you sleep.

Who is the Silk & Snow Eco Soy Pillow for?

  • Sleepers in all positions. The different firmness options make this pillow great for all sleeping positions, provided you don’t need a high loft.
  • Those who sleep hot. Ventilated foam and a comfortable, breathable cover make this pillow perfect for those who sleep a little warmer than average.
  • Eco-conscious Canadians. The eco-conscious and sustainable materials used for this pillow make it well-suited to eco-conscious Canadians.

Who Should Avoid the Silk & Snow Eco Soy Pillow?

  • Those who need a different loft. While you can adjust the firmness of this pillow, the loft is the same between them. Canadians who need a higher loft or a lower loft will need to look elsewhere.

Fill

The core of the Casper Foam Pillow with Snow is made of 100% polyfoam. This foam is certified by CertiPUR-US to be safe from harmful chemicals. On its own, this foam is breathable and doesn’t retain much heat. When paired with Casper’s signature Snow technology (in the form of HeatDelete bands), it rarely gets above a comfortable temperature.

These bands are made of a phase-changing material that moves heat away from you continuously. They work to maintain a perfectly comfortable temperature throughout the night, moving heat away from your face and neck. This means that you’ll stay cool and comfortable no matter how hot you sleep.

Cover

There are two covers on this pillow. The first is an inner shell to protect the foam insert and maintain breathability. This layer is made with 100% muslin. It’s soft and allows airflow to pass through without any issues at all. The outer shell, on the other hand, is completely machine washable.

This outer cover is made of a blend of materials for additional softness and cooling capabilities. The blend is 67% polyester, 27% polyethylene, 3% recycled cotton, 2% spandex, and 1% rayon. As a result of this blend, the fabric is cool and breathable. It removes heat and maintains a comfortable feel.

Performance

When it comes to cooling, few pillows perform as well as this one. It’s soft, comfortable, and supportive as well. It offers a high loft option for support and alignment, which was especially comfortable for our side-sleeping testers.

Across the board, our testing team loved the way this pillow stayed cool. It dealt with a lot of heat throughout the night without inspiring night sweats. Others loved the different loft options, which were uniquely tailored for their needs.

Sizes and Options

There are two size options available for this pillow. You can choose the Standard or King, and each has a different height for their loft options. Here are the dimensions for each size and loft option:

  • Low Loft – Standard: 16″ x 24″ x 5″
  • Low Loft – King: 16″ x 34″ x 6″
  • High Loft – Standard: 16″ x 24″ x 5″
  • High Loft – King: 16″ x 34″ x 6″

While we are specifically reviewing the Snow version of this pillow for its cooling capabilities, you can also choose the standard Casper Foam pillow if you prefer. It has good breathability, but won’t cool in the same way as the Snow version.

Who is the Casper Foam Pillow with Snow for?

  • Canadians who need intense cooling. The Snow technology in this pillow provides intense cooling for those who sleep hot.
  • All sleeping positions. Because you can choose the loft you want, this pillow is well-suited to all sleeping positions.
  • Those who want a longer warranty. The Casper Foam Pillow with Snow has a 5-year warranty, which is one of the longest we’ve seen for a pillow.

Who Should Avoid the Casper Foam Pillow with Snow?

  • Canadians on a budget. This pillow has a lot of great benefits, but it’s a little pricier than we generally like to see.

Alternative Option

This cooling pillow works well, but it’s still a solid foam core pillow. Some Canadians prefer the softer, airy loft of a fill-only pillow. If you’d rather have cloud-like softness from real duck down, the Silk & Snow Reserve Down Pillow is the best choice for you.

Best Down Pillow – Silk & Snow Reserve Down Pillow

Best Down Pillow
Down is naturally breathable, so this pillow is one of the best for natural airflow and moisture-wicking.
  • Materials: 10/10
  • Size Options: 9/10
  • Firmness and Loft Options: 8/10
  • Price: 7/10
  • Policies: 10/10

Highlights

  • Airy, breathable design
  • Ethically gathered down with no animals harmed
  • Soft, supportive loft that suits most sleepers.

“This down is extremely breathable, and I can feel it in the way that it doesn’t hold on to heat. I’m loving it.”

— Slumber.ca Verified Mattress Review (Silk & Snow Reserve Down Pillow)

Fill

The Silk & Snow Reserve Down Pillow is filled with a luxurious pure white duck down. This is a down-only pillow. This means that it doesn’t use foam, but it also doesn’t use feathers. Because of this, it’s extremely fluffy. All down used in the fill is certified by the Responsible Down Standard. It is harvested ethically and humanely.

The fill is arranged in a gusseted construction. This means that the pillow won’t flatten out over time. The gussets will help the pillow maintain its shape and softness throughout its lifespan, ensuring that you always have the right level of support.

Cover

The 100% cotton cover of this pillow uses a silky sateen weave. This weave gives the cover of the pillow a beautiful sheen. It’s dense and soft, but it’s also breathable enough to keep you cool throughout the night. It works well with most pillowcases, so you can slide it easily into any of your favourite sheet sets.

Performance

This pillow offered the best of both worlds to our testing team. It was soft and supportive without becoming uncomfortable on either end. The gusseted inner design means that the pillow won’t go flat or compress over time, so those who need a consistent loft will be comfortable here. Even though it has this construction, it’s also malleable enough to push into the shape you want. In that way, it’s adaptable for many sleeping positions.

Sizes and Options

There are two size options to choose from when you order this pillow. While some of Silk & Snow’s pillows have loft or firmness options, this isn’t one of them. Instead, you’ll only be able to choose between a Standard pillow (18″ x 26″) or a King pillow (18″ x 34″).

Who is the Silk & Snow Reserve Down Pillow for?

  • Canadians who are looking for a luxury pillow. This pillow is a bit more expensive because it is more luxurious than other options. Pure white duck down is a coveted fill material.
  • Those who don’t need a higher loft. The medium loft on this pillow can be suitable for most sleepers, especially if they don’t need a super high loft.
  • Those without animal product allergies. If you aren’t allergic to down or other animal products, this pillow is a good choice for you.

Who Should Avoid the Silk & Snow Reserve Down Pillow?

  • Canadians with allergies. The down in this pillow can make your allergies flare, so keep that in mind before purchasing.
