How to Choose a Canadian Mattress That’s Right for You

With so many different mattress options available in the Canadian market, narrowing down the right one for you can be challenging. Our team of experts tried all of the best hybrid and all-foam options to find the best mattresses you can buy. Not all mattresses will work for all sleeping types, though, so examining your sleep habits, preferred temperature, and pressure needs is the first step in choosing a new mattress.

Our researchers compared many different features when choosing our favourite options, including the type of mattress, whether it had edge support, cooling properties and more. We are confident that one of our recommended mattresses will be a great fit for you. We looked at the following features when choosing our favourite mattresses in Canada.

Mattress Type

Our experts looked at two different mattress types, hybrid and all-foam when narrowing down our favourite options. While neither is better than the other, they do have some differences to consider.

All-foam mattresses are made from multiple layers of foam and typically have a thick, high-density foam base. These mattresses are less expensive than hybrid options but may not last as long. All-foam mattresses can feature excellent cooling properties and often have a removable and washable cover, which is great for spills or those with allergies.

Hybrid mattresses are made from thinner layers of foam or a pillow top that sits on top of a pocket coil foundation. These mattresses are highly durable and built to last a long time. Ideal for couples, pocket coils have superior motion isolation. Hybrid options often cost more than all-foam mattresses.

Sleeping Position & Firmness

Most experts recommend a medium firm mattress, ranking between 6 and 7 on the firmness scale, but ultimately comes down to personal preference. When deciding which mattress to buy, looking at its ranked firmness is crucial to making sure you will have comfortable sleep.

Those who sleep on their stomach often find a softer mattress that ranks 6.5 or less to be the most comfortable. Side sleepers have a bit more flexibility in their firmness options but should look for a mattress that uniquely caters to joints and pressure points.

Canadians with back pain will need extra lumbar support, and a mattress that is over 6.5 is sometimes the best option. These mattresses will be firmer and help with spinal alignment and keeping your body in an ergonomic position.

Edge Support

Those who sleep on the edge of the bed may find that their mattress starts to sink and sag over time, causing slippage and discomfort. Our testers looked for mattresses with reinforced perimeter support, ensuring that no matter where you sleep on the bed, the mattress will keep its shape and form.

The edge support systems found in the mattresses that we recommend feature thick pocket coils that are stronger and more durable along the edge. These reinforced steel coils help keep their shape despite repeated sleeping and sitting. Occasionally, all-foam mattresses also offer an edge support system made of denser foam, but they are not as effective as the ones found in hybrid options.

Temperature Control

Many Canadians wake up feeling overheated and sweaty, which is usually due to a mattress lacking temperature control. Many mattresses our experts recommend have great cooling properties, but some are definitely superior to others.

Those who sleep minimally warm will be comfortable with most of the mattresses on our list today, as they all have cooling covers with some sort of airy or cooling foam. For those who sleep hot, however, choosing a mattress that features gel foam layers or unique fabrics that are infused with cooling technology is the best choice. Hybrid mattresses often sleep cooler than all-foam mattresses due to a more breathable and airy coil foundation.

Pressure Relief

Our experts know how important pressure relief measures in a mattress are, and we went to great lengths to test multiple options to find the best ones. Canadians who wake up aching, sore and stiff will want to find a mattress that offers pressure relief. A mattress with great pressure relief will cradle joints and pressure points and help with back support.

We found that the best pressure relief featured cooling gel foams, layers of graphite or latex foam and soft and supportive materials. Hybrid options with unique zoned coil support are also excellent mattresses, as they target different parts of your body like the hips, shoulders and head in order to get maximum support.

Sleep Trials

All the mattresses we compared and tested feature sleep trials, which is an essential feature when buying a mattress online. Without the ability to test a mattress in person, making sure that you can try it out at home for a period of time and return it if unhappy is important. Most sleep trials last between 100 to 365 nights, depending on the mattress. Typically, users must own a mattress for at least 30 nights before contacting support to return it, ensuring you can sleep on it long enough to break it in properly.

For all of the mattresses on our list, if you need to return them after the required ownership period, contact the company via email or customer support. They will typically then ask for original proof of sale, photos of the mattress and the tags, and confirmation it has not been damaged. Most mattress companies will pick up the mattress to either donate or recycle and then issue a refund, which can take about 14 days.

Motion Isolation

Many sleepers share a bed with restless partners or active pets and would benefit from a mattress with motion isolation. Mattresses with motion isolation feature layers of transition foam or pocket coils that absorb motion, keeping you sleeping soundly, even if your partner is tossing and turning.

All foam mattresses that have motion isolation have multiple layers of foam, including open-cell transition foam that prevents motion transfer. Hybrid mattresses typically include foam layers, as well as airy pocket coils, that are individually wrapped for ultimate motion isolation.

Warranty Policies

Anytime you buy a mattress, you should examine its warranty policy, which will help give you long-term peace of mind in case of any issues down the road. All of the mattresses our experts have recommended have great warranties included with purchase, though they vary in terms of length and coverage.

We looked at mattresses that cover manufacturing flaws, zipper and material defects and large body indents. Some warranties cover fewer repairs as time goes on, and others may require you to pay shipping or a portion of repair costs. The warranties we chose range from 10 to 15 years.

When you buy a mattress, make sure to register your product if required and keep all receipts. In order to claim a warranty, you must be the original owner and have kept it on an approved frame or surface.
